Guidance for parents or caregivers

Services like Spotify provide a unique opportunity for parents and children to explore together, find educational content and listen to music. I’m sure many of you have benefited from lullaby playlists to get your children off to sleep, and many others have enjoyed introducing them to that particular song that you loved when you were their age. In recent years, there has been a lot of growth in the amount of online spaces that children can use, and it can be overwhelming to know how best to limit the content and features they can access online while they play.

I’m Alex Holmes, and I sit on the global safety advisory boards of a number of major technology companies, including Spotify, advising them on their approach to safety and online harms. I am also Deputy CEO of the non-profit The Diana Award, a legacy of Princess Diana’s belief that young people have the power to change the world. I founded the peer-to-peer support programme Anti-Bullying Ambassadors when I was 16 after being bullied myself. I also work at the BBC’s charity, BBC Children in Need. As you can imagine, I am keenly interested in addressing any barriers to children’s happiness and wellbeing.

In the online world, I always suggest that parents should work together with their children to decide what type of content and features are appropriate for them. Discuss what types of content you are comfortable with them listening to, and help them understand what they can do if content makes them feel upset or worried. In order to assist parents and families make these decisions, Spotify has put together a guide below that outlines the latest tools and features they have designed for children, including parental controls that you can use to protect them from explicit content and ways for you to report any unwanted content or attention.

It is hard to navigate all the different services that your child might use, and I encourage every parent or carer to work with their child to understand Spotify, the kinds of music that they are listening to and the ways in which they are engaging with others. It may also be useful to help them think about their actions towards other children and that they should be considerate of playlist titles, profiles or playlist photos/uploads. Encourage them to share their playlists with you, as this could be an opportunity to curate and connect together, and have a healthy dialogue.

Music and audio are important parts of how children learn to express themselves and understand the world. With the right support, you can use tools like Spotify to help them become more confident, resilient and curious, while balancing their privacy, freedom and your own parenting style. Ultimately, talking with your child about these matters is the best way to show them that you are there to support them as they learn about the digital world.

Our commitment to young listeners

Spotify is a digital music, podcast and audiobook service that provides access to millions of songs and other content from creators all over the world. We understand that navigating the digital world can be challenging for parents and that decisions around the content and experiences that are right for your family are often personal. To help craft an experience for young listeners that is engaging and designed with them in mind, we have developed an array of important measures. They include:

  • Establishing a zero-tolerance policy against content that exploits children and Platform Rules ban illegal and/or abusive behaviors that harm children
  • Leveraging machine-learning signals and establishing user-reporting mechanisms to detect to potential policy violations
  • Staffing teams to review and promptly action violative content around the clock
  • Connecting potentially vulnerable users’ to mental health resources when they search for content related to suicide, self-harm and disordered eating content
  • Providing parental controls so that parents and guardians can design the most appropriate experience for their family
  • Proactively seeking feedback from experts on our Spotify Safety Advisory Council, such as Thorn and the Diana Award, and partners at the Jed Foundation, Tech Coalition and WeProtect Alliance to ensure that our teams stay up to date with emerging threats and mitigation techniques.

As the child safety landscape evolves, we will continue refining our policies, tools and capabilities. In the meantime, please read on to learn more about the steps that you can take as a parent or guardian to help create a better experience for young listeners.

Your child’s experience on Spotify

Creating an account

All users must meet the minimum age requirement for the country associated with their account. If your child is under the minimum age to use Spotify or does not otherwise meet the requirements of our Terms of Use, their account must be closed or be a managed account.

When creating an account, it’s important to represent your child’s age accurately. This helps to ensure compliance with local laws and helps us deliver the right product experience.

Managed accounts

Managed accounts offer a music experience that is designed for kids to explore independently, while giving parents and guardians tools to guide and shape their listening environment. This account for listeners under 13 (or local equivalent) allows them to discover new sounds and start shaping their own tastes through our rich catalog of music. The following features apply to all managed accounts by default:

  • Music only: Audiobooks and podcasts are not available to managed accounts. Additionally, certain songs may be unavailable, for example those with sexually explicit lyrics, reflecting an approach shaped with our Spotify Safety Advisory Council.
  • Limited interactivity: Managed account profiles are private and not searchable or discoverable. They also cannot search for or discover other Spotify users or take part in Jam and Blend.
  • Age-restricted features: Managed accounts can’t access age-restricted features like Messages or music videos tagged as 18+ by rights holders.
  • Automatic search protection: Searches and search suggestions for terms commonly associated with age-inappropriate content are prevented.
  • Advertising: Managed accounts on our Premium Family plan have ad-free music listening. While managed accounts on our free service do have advertising, the experience is limited to informational ads about Spotify features and there are no direct purchase links.

Additionally, parents/guardians can use our in-app controls to guide what young listeners can access. Every child is different and every family’s journey is unique, so we’re committed to evolving our tools to help parents and guardians share music in the way that feels right for them. These tools currently include:

  • Controlling the playback of specific artists & songs: parents/guardians can disable specific artists or tracks.
  • The Explicit Content filter: parents/guardians can turn off songs that are tagged as explicit by creators and rightsholders. Explicit content is automatically turned off for managed accounts, with an option for parents/guardians to change this via their Settings.
  • Controls for Videos and Canvas: parents/guardians can control young listeners’ access to Canvas (short, looping visuals accompanying songs) and video across all Spotify surfaces. Videos and Canvas are automatically turned off for managed accounts, with an option for parents/guardians to change this via their Settings.

Reporting violative content

All content on Spotify must comply with local laws and our Platform Rules. These Rules were developed by our in-house team of safety policy experts with feedback from trusted global safety experts, including our Spotify Safety Advisory Council. We also have teams staffed globally around the clock to help ensure that content is promptly reviewed and actioned appropriately.

Our policies and enforcement approach are not static and evolve in response to changing abuse trends, the global regulatory landscape, new content types and feedback from our trusted safety partners.
