Sync your device with Spotify

Syncing your iPhone, iPod touch or Android devices with Spotify.

Please make sure that you have the latest Spotify mobile version.

To sync your phone with Spotify:

  1. Log in to Spotify on your computer
  2. Connect your phone to the same wifi network as your computer (make sure that your computer is connected to the wifi network wirelessly)
  3. Log in to the Spotify app on your phone
  4. Your phone should now appear under “Devices” in your Spotify desktop client.
  5. Select your device in the Devices list
  6. Choose the playlists you would like to sync for offline use on your phone. When syncing your phone with Spotify no content will be removed.

Syncing your iPod with Spotify:


When syncing your music from Spotify to your iPod, only music that you have imported into Local Files, will be transferred. You can read more about Local music here.

When syncing your iPod with Spotify for the first time, the following content will be erased from your iPod. The music will be replaced by music from your computer.

  • Movies
  • TV shows
  • Audiobooks

Please make sure that you don’t have iTunes running before you sync your iPod with Spotify.

To sync your iPod with Spotify:

  1. Start Spotify
  2. Connect your iPod to your computer and the iPod will appear under “Devices” in Spotify instantly
  3. Click “Erase your iPod & Sync this iPod with Spotify” to start transferring your files

If you would like to choose which playlists you want to sync to your iPod click “Manually choose playlist to sync” on the device page.

Can I sync my streaming music from Spotify to my iPod?

No. Only local music files can be synced to your iPod. Spotify streaming music can only be played within Spotify applications.

Can I sync my iPod with iTunes while it is synced with Spotify?

You are not able to add or sync new movies, TV shows or audiobooks to your iPod from iTunes without removing the music from your Spotify Library. However, you can still sync your podcasts and photos.

Can I sync my iPod to my Spotify account on several computers?

You can only sync your iPod with one Spotify installation at a time. Please note that if you sync your iPod to your Spotify account on another computer the content on your iPod will be replaced with the local tracks from that computer instead. Read more about syncing here.

Will album art show on my iPod?

Yes, all your purchased tracks in Spotify will show album art. When possible we will also try to show album art for your other local tracks.

How do I eject my iPod from Spotify?

You can eject the iPod by either clicking on the eject button to the right of the iPod name ,or by right-clicking the device name and selecting “Eject”. We recommend that you eject your iPod properly before disconnecting the cable.

My iPod does not show in Spotify's Devices list

If the iPod does not show in Spotify’s Devices list, unplug your iPod from your computer and reconnect it again.

Can I sync my podcasts to my iPod with Spotify?

You will be able to continue to sync podcasts through iTunes without affecting the music you have synced through Spotify.

You can also use Spotify to sync your podcasts if you have imported your iTunes library into Spotify. When a podcast has been downloaded in iTunes it will automatically appear in the Local files list in Spotify and then synced to the iPod.

Note that your podcasts synced through Spotify will be placed under Music in your iPod.

Will all existing content be removed from my iPod when I sync it with Spotify?

In order for Spotify to work with your iPod, your movies, TV shows and audiobooks will be removed when syncing with Spotify the first time. (To save these, please backup your content in iTunes before syncing with Spotify.) Read more about how to sync your iPod here.

How to stop syncing your iPod with Spotify

If you would like your iPod to no longer sync with Spotify, you can resync with iTunes:

  • Make sure that Spotify is not running: File ► Exit
  • Make sure your iPod is not connected to your computer
  • Start iTunes
  • Connect your iPod
  • Click on the iPod listed under Devices in iTunes
  • Go to the Music tab
  • Click in the Sync music checkbox
  • You will see a message box. Press “Sync Music”
  • Press the Apply button, in the bottom, right corner
  • You will see another message box. Press “Erase and Sync”

Your iPod will now be synced with iTunes, and no longer synced with Spotify.

If you connect your iPod when Spotify is running, it will not sync. If you click on the iPod in the Devices listyou will see the “Erase iPod and Sync with Spotify” message.

Does Spotify support all iPods?

Spotify supports all models of iPods except the very early, Firewire versions.
