Our monthly round-up wouldn’t be complete without checking out the tunes provided by our friends over at Acid Jazz Hispano. Their taste is exemplary, as always, as they take us on an eclectic journey through everything from jazz and funk, to soul and house, through hip-hop and disco. Our favourites from this month’s edition include: Jurassic 5, Missy Elliott, Mos Def, Jill Scott, Van Morrison, Alcohol Jazz, Mr Scruff, St Germain, The Herbaliser and Cannonball Adderley.

L.A. Noire Radio Songs

L.A. Noire is the latest release from Rockstar to get gamers in a tizz. It’s garnered rave reviews from the press as a watershed moment in console history – and the music is pretty decent to. Check out this playlist for all the music from the game, artists such as T-Bone Walker, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. The game also stars Ken Cosgrove, Mad Men fans. Sadly, he doesn’t feature on this playlist.

Alternative Cupcake - May 2011

We probably can’t keep calling Philippe Patou’s Alternative Cupcake our favourite new playlist – as we’re now on episode five. No matter, it’s still full of ace new music and modern classics: The Raveonettes, I Am Kloot, Panda Bear, Grinderman, Beastie Boys, Guillemots, Alex Turner, Elbow and MGMT. Any good for you? We thought so.

Dawn Of Dance

SMP’s head honcho, Kieron, is the man behind this epic playlist, charting the history of dance music through the ’80s and 90’s. Everything from Chicago house and Detroit techno, through to rave and acid house is covered on this one – tunes by Frankie Knuckles, Inner City, Orbital A Guy Called Gerald and stacks, stacks more.

Soundtrack to the Summer

The sun has been shining here at SMP Towers this week, and warm weather and cool music go hand in hand; which is where this playlist, Soundtrack to the Summer, comes in. Compilation king Lasse Nordgren is the creator, based on four CDs released by the NME – Mud On The Dancefloor, So I Walked Down To The Beach, Music For An Out Of Hand Barbecue and Happy When It Rain – all brimming with feel-good indie anthems, circa 2003, with a few bona fide classics thrown in for good measure.

The last of our monthlies comes in the shape of May 2011 - indie & electroncia. There’s sumptuous new music from Fleet Foxes, leftfield pop from Lykke Li, the incendiary return of Burial, beautiful songwriting by Fink and a cinematic composition from Woodkid, to name but a few. Superb, as always.

Next up we have a mixtape dedicated to BBC Radio 1’s premier tastemaker, the king of world music, Mr eclectic himself, Gilles Peterson. Expect a joyous mishmash of incredible music as played on his Worldwide show and during his epic DJ sets. Everything from acid jazz to hip hop, from soul to house and beyond. If you’re a fan of the Brownswood label owner – and why wouldn’t you be – this is the playlist for you.

Rapture

“That’s great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid…” It wasn’t the end of the world as we know it. And we feel fine. Which is quite nice because an apocalypse would have probably put a bit of a downer on the whole summer, wouldn’t it? Celebrate, like, being alive and stuff, with this mixtape full of the best Rapture-themed tunes: Do You Believe In Rapture?, Armageddon, The End Of the World Is Bigger Than Love and It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), obviously.

One of our favourite playlists this month comes in the shape of this mixtape, the Ultimate Ninja Tune Playlist. It’s brilliance lies in its simplicity: it’s an epic collection – over 2,600 tracks no less – of quality, quality music from the legendary British record label.
