Playlists have always been central to the Spotify service and with the recent introduction of Spotify social we’ve seen millions of playlists be shared between friends and family. With millions of great playlists being created and shared we’ve looked to make it even easier for Spotify users to manage them with today’s introduction of playlist folders in this Spotify update.
To create a playlist folder, simply go to the File -> New playlist folder or click the “+” symbol near the top left side of your screen. Once you’ve created a folder you can just drag and drop existing playlists into it and even create folders within folders to better organise your music.
Alongside playlist folders - which up till now has been one of our users’ most requested features - we’re also introducing a number of other cool new features in this latest update, including:
We’ll begin rolling out the new version to users today, you’ll be automatically updated once we are able to update more users. We really hope you love the new features as much as we do!

Finally! Folders seems like the best thing ever that can happen to my pile of playlists :)
The last missing feature :)
JAAAAAAA!!! Äntligen!
yesss!!!
Finally! This is the single feature I've been wishing for since the beginning. Thank you.
sweet! thanks
Linux preview will get those features too ?
Tack för kaffet
In a word: brilliant! Great job guys...
Great, now I can group my playlists by composers;) http://www.spotifyclassical.com/
please make a feature that notice you then a track you have in a playlist is no longer available on Spotify so you can find a alternative release. hate that I have to go though all of my playlists to find 5-6 tracks that I have to replace whit new releases.
Riktigt jävla bra!
I have yet to hear if this means i can play a folder of playlists instead.. I.e. 'All' is a folder with every playlist in it, and it'll play each playlist sequentially (or shuffled if i've set it).. Anyone?
I just had a religious feeling. This is too great news :) GREAT work Spotify, this one is the best feature yet IMO :)
I hope these folders show up in the mobile app soon as I share my account with my Wife and it would make my life easier :D
I would like a function where you can see in which (popular?) playlists a track is included. Spotify needs to be much more social (and people as well... share the music!!).
Wait... Doesen't the mobile client also support folders? Thats really the reason I got this religious feeling... Using android client, newest version (just updatet 5 minutes ago)
Good job Spotify!
@discomcdisco Yeah, you can play a Playlist folder, just right click on it, and say Play.
this is going to be really useful... I like that you can play a folder too!!
Should we expect the roll out to be the same order and speed as the social update patch? i.e. should I ignore this post for a week?
YES!!!
If you re-download spotify you will get the new version :)
@amorpisseur: Yes, it will be updated, should become available as an update during the day.
You rock! Thank you so much! :)
@swamp: will mobile clients also get folder support soon?
Thank you! I've been waiting for this one. Super to finally have it!
Awesome! I found a "bug" though.. In the Linux preview client you can only File -> New Playlist Folder, not use the big "+"-button, it only adds a new playlist.
Wohaaaa!
Now we need a sorting option. Why not sorting every playlist folder automatically by playlist name?
@flosoft : now that's more like it :D - Thank you...
Now all I need is a "Sent" folder where I can actually see the songs I've sent to my friends. It's hard to remember which songs I've sent to who...
Am I the only one who are more excited over Windows 7 Snap support than folders? :D
@olofom: Yes, the behaviour was changed after the preview releases. Try the new version once it becomes available - we've fixed a few bugs since, too.
Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!
Superb news. Long awaited feature. Now another suggestion. How about being able to lock your own playlists and folders so they can't be accidently deleted or amended. I lot of hard work organising my folders could be ruined in minutes by my meddling kids!!
Great, the waiting is over!! :-)
You know I could kiss you right now ? I expect it will be usefull with my 300+ playlists :-)
I was thinking about this featue today! It's like you guys can read minds!
I love you! Just found a bug.. I don't know if folders are supposed to get published but when trying the folder get synced for offline mode instead.
--> SMART PLAYLISTS <-- folders are great! but the only way to switch from iTunes fully is once Spotify has smart Playlists
Yes! Finally, the most anticipated and appreciated update ever!
@gs - thanks for pointing that out, we'll get it fixed.
Superb! I'd really like a feature that would allow me to mark artists/albums as favourites.
I love that the folders are "see through" .. meaning that i can play all the folders and playlists inside a folder by just selecting the top folder!
Hi, Any chance that a "Share this folder" feature will be included in the future?
At least in the Linux preview, choosing Copy Spotify URI on a folder copies the URI of each individual song contained in the folder, or at least as much as the 32k buffer can hold.
Jessssss - Sooo Good
This is great, thanks!
Now the only thing I think is missing is bar that shows if you already have the song in a playlist and the ability to add local directories to be added in the "library" so that you don't have to add new files all the time but that spotify automatically adds new files (from that directory) at startup.
