Spotify iPhone app update coming soon

It’s been a little while since we first released our iPhone app to the public and many of you have been wondering when you’re going to see an update. Well, we’re happy to announce that earlier today we submitted a new version to the nice people over at Apple for approval.

Along with a number of fixes to the app we’ve added a range of great new features. Some of the additions include:

 • Last.fm scrobbling.
 • The ability to open and play Spotify links e.g. straight from your Facebook app or browser.
 • Save time and space by using tracks already stored on your iPod in your playlists - there’s no need to sync those track anymore.
 • Save and find your favourite tracks and albums with the Starred playlist and Star buttons (also coming to the desktop version soon!).
 • Support for listening at 96 kb/s for more efficient streaming on slow connections.

Stay tuned to our blog for more news in the coming weeks.

And share music? To facebook, Twitter etc?

Scrobbling is niiice! Thanks for that one!

star! finally!

What about queueing?

That's a great list of new features. 320kbps on the iPhone would be cool too. By the way, will we be able to star Artists ? I'd love to have that feature !

I don't have an iPhone, but really nice that we can star tracks in the future. :D

I har to agree with ulf_g... You managed to get my most requested feature in there though, not being able load links on my phone was driving me nuts ;) for this I am extremely grateful :D ... Sharing my playlists is next on the list. Thanks for the hard work guys

How about: 1. Sorting on artist or song title in playlists. 2. Make Spotify compatible with Iphone phones control, like i iPod-app (dubble click to change song).

Awesome features! And I assume an updated version of the Android client is coming soon too :)

...and Symbian update also, please!

When are we going to get the blackberry app that we were promised??? Great to hear you are updating exsisting apps for iPhone/Android/Symbian but please these are no good to me :(

When connected to a power source, will the Spotify app prevent the iPhone from going to sleep? That would be really great!!

Looks great, nice job! How about remembering the last search I did when restarting the app?

Will there be an update to the Android app as well? Especially the last.fm scobbling.

Only been using theapp 24 hours now and th changes yo have suggested are welcome. Further changes are: 1. As nhatii said...control via headphones so songs can at least be stopped easily instead of switching to iPod <--this is a must. 2. ulf_g said it...sharing to Facebook and Twitter would make Spotify a contender in mobile social networks.

Great to hear about the new features. A new Android version in the pipeline soon?

Great update guys, looking forward to it

is the normal bitrate 160 on mobile devices? why not add 320 aswell? I have my phone hooked up to my stereo with wifi and would like 320kbps for that.

"Save time and space by using tracks already stored on your iPod in your playlists - there’s no need to sync those track anymore." Any chance we could get that for the desktop version ;)

i'll probably subscribe again if scrobbling is enabled then ! Hope the approval won't take too long !

@nhatti : I use Music Control on my jailbroken iPhone. It's not a free app, but it's really a game changer together with Backgrounder, which allows Spotify to continue playing while using other apps. You should really look into jailbreaking your iPhone if you haven't already, I can't imagine using Spotify without these apps.

I wholeheartedly agree with karlfreeman! This is a step in the right direction, though, I wonder if it'll be approved as it's DEFINITELY stepping on Apple's toes this time!

Queuing's a must!

I personally don't care about the iPhone application but the Android, and the fact that is very annoying to not being able to download Android's Spotify from a Market when outside my country. Since Android's Spotify is only available for Premium customer, can't you just make the application available in the Market with no geographical restrictions?

Altough iPhone users should be happy, we're waiting for same changes asap in Android, the market share of this system is growing day by day and the tools need improvement, and as many options as possible. Good the Last.Fm scrobbling, I was missing it. Cheers

@felipe.alfaro : how about looking around this very website, which provides a solution to your problem (manual download), instead of complaining in the comments of an *iPhone* announcement ?

Sounds really sweet, finally getting some last.fm action. Also, just got myself an unlimited usage dataplan, this'll come in handy ;) Lastly, any hope that we can open spotify urls directly from the iPhone anytime soon?

How about offline sync over USB ?? Since my WIFI is broken, en i am not able to sync my offline songs.. The reason i canceled my account.. :(

Nice one, any news on the BlackBerry app?

@felipe.alfaro Yeah, it would be really nice if they remove the geographical restrictions from the android market, so we can get updates and download the app directly fro there. Also I feel that the android app is a little bit limited in functionality... if you are browsing an artist you can't select a single track from that little window and add it to your playlists. The only option you have is the big "add to playlist" button that adds the entire album to your playlists. That makes no sense to me. I wouldn't complain if they add a queue feautre, history... and stuff like that. Just like the desktop app. Comments should be enabled in the system, at least for premium users. Comments on each track, album or artist would be groundbreaking ;) Premium users or trusted users could have this moderator power and maintain the comments clean in case that spotify enables them for the freemium users. @spotify I Love the service ;)

Symbian update please!

does this mean an android version is ready for release, as soon as Apple approve the iPhone version - so they can all be released on the same day etc...

Sharing to Twitter, Facebook, email, etc is also supported in the latest release. We'll post full feature notes once it's ready. We are continually working on developing Android and S60 as well, so stay tuned for more on that later.

when can i update?

Wuhuu! Scrobbling!

what about adding albums/songs to a new playlist created in the app. Very annoying that i only seem to be able to add these things to playlists that already exist.

Yes, as someone said above, the sorting of playlist by artist or songtitle is something ive really been missing. With the current app its really hard to navigate in big playlists.

=== popurls.com === popular today... yeah! this story has entered the popular today section on popurls.com...

wonderful features, bring them to symbian=) AND THE PC!

Huzzah! Looking forward to this guys!

last.fm scrobbling! Awesome!!! Thankyou!!!

Scrobbling! Yeah!

Great work Spotify!!! Looking forward for this!

Great to hear of updates. Got to admit, though, that I'm surprised not to see "add to new playlist" or search-history though. They seem to be natural enhancements. But really, thanks for a great service!

We need this to work with the iphone controls, remote, docks, headsets etc. Everytime I use the remote for my iphone/ipod to switch tracks - it turns on the ipod and stops spotify!

Just want to mention again that I am still waiting for a Maemo client!:) I just need a simple player with offline sync and I'm a happy camper!:)

Seems that a lot of people on the internet seems to think that the Spotify IPhone app will now be able to include music from the itunes library! That's not how i understood your announcement, but i think maybe someone from Spotify should clarify what "Save time and space by using tracks already stored on your iPod in your playlists - there’s no need to sync those track anymore" means.

Good sound-quality and queue is for me most important. Would be nice if you can chose to download soundtracks with 3g also to tour playlist, not just with wifi.
