We’re in the process of releasing an update to Spotify, version 0.3.23. We’ve made some minor bug fixes and added password protection to download purchases which you can modify in the preferences menu.
The other main change with this release is the addition of a ‘Related artists’ tab to the artist view.
This feature is pretty exciting for us as it’s the first time we’ve used our own data to power recommendations. Previously we’ve used genre and artist tagging from AllMusic for related artists which worked well, but did not cover a large portion of our catalogue. What we’ve done now is to go through months and months of listening data and look closely at what people listen to.
This allows us to see that users who listen to a lot of The Rolling Stones, for example, are also big fans of Iggy Pop or The Byrds. The new feature pulls some of this information together to show you a range of related artists in one tab.
The ‘Related artist’ tab is the first of many uses for this data and we hope you’ll be able to find some great new bands you might not have otherwise heard of.

This looks excellent. A 'Genius'-style playlist creation tool would be good too...
@Andres - A bad choice of screen dump to show off the new feature. Bob Dylan, first in the list, an artist who has asked for all of his tracks to be removed from Spotify. Does this mean that this new feature will suggest related artists who have no playable tracks? Either because the artist has asked for them to be removed, or they are restricted in the region we are registered in? Other than this small gripe (which, as usual, is completely out of Spotify's control and completely the fault of the music industry who seem hell bent on causing streaming services to fail because they just don't get that the one killer feature is social networks and this is crippled by regional restrictions and a lack of global licensing) I like the new feature!
Great to get an extended list of artists in the client. Genius playlists-extension soon? Until then, there's still Spotibot (if you've not already seen it: http://spotibot.com/playlist )
Sounds interesting! And as ralasdair just said, something similar to 'Genius' would be awesome. Thanks!
Great update. It would be nice to see the ability to mark albums as favourites in the future. At present I have to drag each album to a new playlist, which means my sidebar is massive!
Great feature! It makes looking for similar music much easier. Thanks Spotify!!
Agree with ziadoz, please, give us the ability to tag an artists as favorite. http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/spotify_favorite_artists http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/favorite_artists http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/favorite_tab_wanted_make_finding_songs_easier http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/favorite_artists_and_albums http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/adding_favorites
Whoops, I forgot to say I think that new feature is really cool :-)
Just played around with it... love it!
This is cool - a nice feature. Good that you are starting to use all that data that you have - noticed this kind of feature in We7 which will soon be the direct Spotify rivals. More interaction is needed in the client IMHO - comments on artists, songs etc.. More user generated content. Get that in there, with re-vamped playlist...and put this stuff into the mobile apps....and you're done! :)
Great! I want some features that promotes artists that haven't been listned at all since added to spotify, so unknown unsigned bands can get a chance to get discovred in Spotify.
I would like a a tab at Home with something like: My collection. Which should contain albums that I choose to have there. The playlist-list is getting long now and its hard to find anything in that list.
I like!
Cool! Will this be available in the metadata api?
Hoh, this explains the "mockup" i found somewhere on twitter: http://tinyurl.com/ylkq625 Great new feature!
That's great to hear you are using your own data to find this out. I bet that will be something that would be very valuable to mine in the future! Look forward to updating and checking this out.
cool feature ;) please, add it on the Android mobile version
Great, but when will we get an improved mechanism to manage playlists?????? --while refraining the temptation of using caps.
Nice. And what about a 'www.metacritic.com/music' tab? It'll be amazing!
cool indeed! can u, like an option, add that u must use a password before u can delete a playlist or songs in a playlist?
A mi lo que de verdad, de todo corazón me gustaría es que Spotify me detectara los duplicados en las playlist :-(
Really great feature, but I'm still waiting for being able to import my own music into Spotify, like in this video (I don't know if it's fake or not), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnqCIDLm_u4 If you did that, Spotify would become the ultimate music program. I would even pay for Premium.
Good luck!
Great! And about time, I must say! Now we're just waiting for lockable collaborative playlists and more community functions!
And how does one get this update?! Should my installed spotify app notify me??
sweet! and I agree with rikardberg.
Bob Dylan? I like your self irony!
i just wanted to say that i want wrock on spotify! band such as ministry of magic, the moaning myrtles and harry and the potters! :D
Nice update guys, is Spotify still under beta? I think it's better than that now! Keep up the good work!
Please, please please can the next update allow iPhone users to be able continue to use their phone whilst still running spotify? It's a bit pants not being able to use your phone whilst listening to tunes. Thanks
dre121 > There's a neat program called "Backgrounder" that allows you to execute any application (including Spotify) in the background, so that you can surf / read your mail / do anything without stopping the music. But you would have to jailbreak your Iphone / Ipod to do that, because it's not a feature supported by Apple and "Backgrounder" is only available on Cydia. Use at your own risk, but it works well - might drain the battery a bit though. What Spotify really lacks compared to deezer is some sort of user generated content - maybe do a partnership with last.fm ?, more recommandations of new music and a better playlist system... As of now, the app is solid and very lightweight, which is good. The goal would be to make it more powerful without becoming bloated...
Although this is certainly an exciting feature I would really appreciate if you can improve the algorithms which pick the music when listening to a Radio. When I want to listen to '00s music, I'm clearly not interested in 60's, 70's etc. music re-released in 00s which is what the radio does pretty often now.
Why copying Last.fm's similar artists feature instead of working closer together with Last.fm and it's EXCELLENT worldwide social music network service? Spotify+Last.fm = ultimate music experience! Don't become a copycat... ;-)
Awesome!
I want a feature that puts unexposed content (with no popularity) on visibility, maybe a check button in the radio tab that filters out already popular content so new unexposed content and artists can be heard for the first time in the spotify client.
By accident discovered this feature while hosting a party and It was such a hit. WHAT SPOTIFY REALLY NEEDS. is a better way for us to organize our libraries. Having 50+ playlist on the sidebar is not convenient at all. Please make it your priority on the next update to have a My library tab. This is where we can create our own library from your library. Sorta like a my favorites page etc. And please add radio to the android app. That would rock. That means i can just create my own radio station and favorite my prefered tracks.
Ok, so now you locked me out of Spotify on my android... Upon starting it I get, there's an update available on market and I get the option to go to market, only to find there is NO update there, or exit. Thank you! Perfect way to start the weekend!
Managed to find the apk for my hero on: http://m.spotify.com/ Downloaded the installation file manually and managed to get it updated. You nearly ruined my weekend spotify! :P
Like they say: A Genius-a-like feature would be nice too!
It would be nice to be able to import your existing music.
I'm very frustrated with spotify ! i had to change my ip to one of UK ! and i checked that there are many more albums than in Spain! for example Every Avenue,We The Kings,Forever The Sickest Kids! it sucks!
I have 2 suggestions of new features: -Supporting Windows 7 "Snap" function. -Autostart Spotify with Windows. Thanks for the best program in the world.
its great, alot better to find new music, found some already, tonight.its n ot that i forgot the music, its just in front of you now, i do find clasical music not easy to find ,hope that may inprove its getting better all the time
Love it! :) I asked for a feature like this 3 months ago. Makes spotify even more perfect! Thanks alot!!!! :D :D
It would be nice to be able to search in the playlist. And I want a Spotifychannel on Nintendo Wii.
'Related artists' is effing excellent. I'm hooked worse than before now. When you or someone makes a a boxee/xbmc-plugin you leave me no choice but to update to the paid version. Or linux support at least would be nice. Thanks
This is why Spotify rock! Makes your music experience a paradise!
You guys still havent changed the login window to display the proxy settings. It's very annoying to have to wait for the login phase to timeout each time i install the application :/ Otherwise kick ass application.
"ahlehjelm said:" "-Autostart Spotify with Windows." Im pretty sure you can do this yourself, just add it on the startup folder (in xp, all programs -> startup) and you got it, dunno about vista/7 but i would imagine its the same.
The update seems to have ruined something. Both my colleague and I experience heavy stuttering at work and at home. We both use Vista at work and Snow Leopard at home with 100 Mbps connections.
