Purchasing music just got easier

buy-album-small.jpg

A few months back we introduced the ability to purchase high quality MP3 tracks directly through Spotify. You may not have known that you could purchase tracks, admittedly the feature was a bit hard to use and required you to right click on tracks/albums that you wanted to buy.

All that changes today as we release our improved ‘Purchases‘ features which allows you to buy your favorite tracks or albums directly in Spotify with only a few clicks.

Purchases will be downloaded onto your computer, placed into your default music folder and can be easily accessed via Spotify or any other program. All the MP3s you purchase are yours to own and can be transferred to any MP3 device of your choosing or burnt to a CD. Have a look at the short demo we put together for more details.

So, if you love to ‘try before you buy’ then hopefully this feature will make your life just a little easier.

Great news! Spotify keeps getting better and better =)

Is there any way to play external MP3s from Spotify or it is limited to tracks bought through it?

With this new feature can I play other MP3 tracks I have on my computer through spotify?

Pretty cool that it can all happen in the Spotify client now, good work! Since this means Spotify is playing local files, does this get us closer to being able to import our own library into Spotify?

Again great news, but one question about this new feature: "Music you’ve purchased can be downloaded 3-5 times depending on which label the music comes from" (http://www.spotify.com/en/about/features/music-purchases/). AFAIK when purchasing music on iTunes i can download it as often as i want! Could you please explain why purchased music is only downloadable 3-5 times on Spotify then?

I've got Spotify - why do I need MP3s? I'd like the ability to turn off this feature, so it doesn't clutter up the user interface. When will I be able to do that?

Good news guys. It would be nice if premium users got 10-15 track download for free every month.I love Spotify but it would be good to get some DRM free downloads for my ipod shuffle. I'm considering moving over to sky music but I really don't want to.

I got the buy-column but as far as I can tell no tracks are available for sale in Norway - yet.

Now, it's just a step forward to make our own mp3s part of Spotify. Keep rockin'

Is this going to be included on the Android app too?

And, yeah, as a premium user, I love to deactivate this feature I'll never use.

@radioedit: Good point, I'd like to be able to turn it off too, since I don't plan on purchasing tracks.

@radioedit: maybe because not every tracks are available on Spotify (or on your region).

A few answers: - No, you can't add or play your own MP3s via Spotify. - The 3-5 download limit is put in place by the individual label that provides the track - I believe iTunes has similar restrictions (although not 100% sure). - The feature is not currently available in Norway or Finland as our download partner 7digital has not launched there yet.

Would love to disable the feature too. With iPhone app and offline mode, I really see no reason to buy/download a song now.

Just a quick note on the upgrade experience; I had a play queue that I'd built up, and it disappeared as part of the forced? (I'd stepped away from my computer, and Spotify was paused) upgrade. If my play queue was persistent, I'd have no problem with this sort of restart, but as it was I'm pretty frustrated. That said, Spotify rocks, and I'm definitely looking forward to the expansion of this local music store. I'd love to be able to add the many songs I own to my Spotify library, and be able to buy tracks from labels that haven't made their way into the catalogue.

andres, what if you having a party and someone is buying a lot of albums on your stored card details?

Thanks for support, people. If you'd like to see the feature made optional, head over here and add your opinion: http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/make_the_purchasing_interface_optional

please come to italy ;)

I agree with some others, please make the purchase button optionnal ! I've subscribed a premium account in order to listen all the music. Spotify represents my music, so please that would be nice not to see "purchase" next to them. Moreover, the UI is better without it Thank you for your great job !

Yes it would be good if you could hide the Buy column. It's an option I'm never going to use, since I subscribe to Spotify's rented music model. ;-)

My Spotify is not asking for an update, and won't connect. Cannot play any music help!!!!!

why are many discs available for purchase only @ 192k ??? All the more absurd when you can buy those on plenty of other platforms @ 320k... try a label search with "freude am tanzen" for instance, this is stuff you can buy @ 320k on boomkat/junodownload/etc, but on spotify it's (mostly) 192k. I know it's not you, but frankly if 7digital can't offer better than that, you urgently need to find a less lousy partner, this is quite comical to pretend selling 192k stuff in 2009

Found this on 7digital's webpage, which you could have included Anders. "The download option will initially be available in the UK and Germany, France, Italy and Spain with Sweden, Norway and Finland following in a few weeks’ time"

And, how about a one-click-button for buying and burning a playlist on a CD? Though I am afraid adding too many functions will make spotify go from small and handy to a heavy and hard-to-use...but im sure the people behind spotify will know what to do:) So far so good:)

I want to disable the Buy column and if it's not possible it should be moved. A Buy column between Song and Artist is not really a good move. It distracts reading. Spotify, please fix it.

I would like to be able to purchase my playlist(s) to download to my phone. what about a one off fee for a playlist containing up to say 50 songs. i don't want to have to pay a monthly amount and have a contract. On the whole, loving Spotify, thanks, although I do find for some reason I have to constantly download it again before signing in which can be very irritating.

Has anyone noticed spotify is slow since this update was made? My music keeps cutting, sometimes for a few minutes?? Is this related or is Spotify just slow today?

wow even jazz stuff (ESP , Alyer records...) is sold @ 192k 7digital really blows here.

Nice feature.. Although I would never pay for an mp3 the feature itself is awesome and definitely a step in the right direction for music distribution. I'm holding out for the time when you can buy lossless music online. Hopefully it won't take a 100 years.

I personally like that you can buy the music, even though i probably never going to do that. But the Buy Track and Buy Album buttons almost feels like banners. (I'm not sure, but I think they are to big or something). I like the buy music feature, but I don't like the new look. Sorry.

... this feature sucks.

... can you get rid of it in premium ? would be another reason for me (beyond the stupid basshunter commercials)

"andres said - No, you can’t add or play your own MP3s via Spotify." When will this be possible? Let us throw out iTunes and never use it again...

I think this is a great update but there really needs to be a possibility to hide the buy buttons. And im really looking forward to adding my own mp3s to my playlists. Like linderborg said: Let us throw out iTunes...

What album is the album cover from in the picture above (with the fields, sea and lighthouse) it looks cool.

This is the worst crap ever... Why would i want to buy a song when i got spotify in the first place to stop buying music? Now i cant even move this buy crap away. Feels like one of these adbanners they disguise everywhere to make you click wrong and accidentally hit it. If you want to have a buy button, please allow us to buy the stuff you do not have in your library = Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, People under the stairs etc. That would make people buy music. I am puzzled why people would buy something they already pay for? Or better yet, let us pay you to import our already bought music in spotify. 1£/song so i can have my music catalog uploaded to spotify for private listening. Anyway Remove this shit..

GREATE! spotify it getting better and better!

The album shown in the screenshot is "Lost Horizons" by "Lemon Jelly"

ok, what you need to do now is apply this to the mobile app so that people can play tracks they buy but don't however need a premium account. continue the good work! :)

Please remove it from the interface. I was OK with it as a right click option - it's not something I'm likely to use but as a right click it does no harm and some might like it - mixed views above. I'd certainly echo the comments of those above who complain that bought files are 192K - the only reason I can think of for still buying albums is to get higher quality - and since Spotify premium is 320K then you're better off NOT buying.

Is is just me - or is the spotify server down. I can only play my offline tracks and can't even do a search???

Great feature. But I stand with the group who like this feature optional. Or at least move the Buy-button to the right of the popular-bar.

I have a Premium account so I don't need to buy anything. Can we have the ability to turn it off please?

Fantastic update! Does anyone know if, or have an estimate when 7digital might launch in Norway? I'd love to be able to use this function.

Please make this optional for Premium users.

I'd also like a way to remove this from the user interface. I'm already paying for a premium subscription and I'm a mobile user - this is just extra noise in the interface - just like the adverts that I also pay not to see...

I'd like to add my voice, and echo the requests to disable / make this feature optional, for premium subscribers. It will tempt more people to upgrade. I think it de-values spotify. With the interface plastered with buy buttons, it now feels like just a pretty gui for a download service. Why would I need to purchase songs, when I have paid my £10/month for spotify premium and the android offline playlists??

Spotify is becoming what it should have been from the start :)

Please can you add an option to turn this off? I'm a premium subscriber so don't intend to purchase much music. Great work on Spotify btw!

Music is sleeping in on a monday morning
