Spotify for iPhone

Late last week we put the finishing touches to a very special project we’ve been wanting to share with you for a while now. After many weeks of burning the midnight oil at Spotify HQ in an effort to squeeze into it every drop of musical goodness, we’ve finally completed work on the Spotify app for the iPhone and sent it over to the nice people at Apple.

We thought it might be nice to show you a video of what we’ve built for you.

Our iPhone version is very similar to the Spotify you’re already familiar with and will allow you to listen to your music even when you’re not connected to a network. The application should be available in a few weeks for premium subscribers - we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as it’s in AppStore.

Update: Spotify is now available on the iPhone.

Great! Cannot wait to use this. Just a few questions: 1. Will this be available outside of the US when released? 2. Will Spotify (iPhone) be released to non-premium users? And what cost may it incur? Thanks!

@rupbert57 - 1. Spotify is not available in the US right now so we won't releasing the app there at all. It will be available in our current launch countries. 2. As stated in the post - this will be released to premium users only.

Great news =] Good luck with getting accepted onto the app store by Apple!

Awesome. Time to go Premium again :)

That's very cool. How much music can you take offline?

How far are we from S60 and Android editions. I'll be taking out a premium sub as soon as it becomes available on S60.

I really hope it will work for non-premium user too! Maybe not with all features but a lite-version for us who don´t have a Spotify-premium accont would be great!

Looks really nice, how about S60 version anytime soon?

Can't wait to get it! And I assume that the app can be downloaded for free?

Looks good, clever marketing too, announced just as it's been submitted to the App store, with no guarantee of acceptance. Your move, Apple! Assuming it gets accepted (which I suspect it might not...) then the premium Spotify service might well be worth it, I mean who will buy from iTunes? Might also force Apple into some sort of subscription model for iTunes too. I think a suitably agitated cat has been placed amongst the Cupertino Pigeons :-)

Would like to see a non-premium version, and would be willing to pay a one-off cost for the app. Sorry, not signing up for premium just for this! But good to see progress on mobile handsets.

Any plans to release this to other phone models? I realy like this thing, but the iPhone still just have about 10% of the smartphone market and I'm not going to buy one just for this ;)

Great great great! My premium account is 4 days old, my iPhone is 2 days old, and this is exactly what I was waiting for :)

@daniabel - Yes, the app itself will be a free download but you'll need the premium subscription to use it.

Great stuff. Any planes for a Nokia app?

Äntligen!

@itobbe: I really hope that it WILL NOT work for non premium users. Go premium and support Spotify!

Looks great guys. I have one question though; does it scrobble?

Also going premium as soon as a S60 version is out. So please hurry ;)

What about the Android version ??? It is almost two months now since the Google IO demo. Any beta available for testing ? Or maybe are you on purpose delaying the release so you can participate in the ADC2 ?

Will this app be available on iPod Touch as well? Please say yes. :)

When will we get Spotify for Android?

Amazing stuff! But one thing I noticed is that the music seems to stop playing when you press the menubutton at the bottom of the iPhone - Is it not possible to make the music continue playing while you are outside the app as of OS3.0?

Any chance of a Windows Mobile version on the horizon?

Good news and as previously mentioned above a good move to announce in advance, hopefully an outcry if Apple deny it. Like Paul Watson I'm interested in scrobbling my plays to Last.FM?

Hi, great stuff, can't wait to use the app. Two questions come to mind though, 1: Is there a limit on how much one can cache music in the offline mode aside from the available free space on the phone? 2: Will there be a version for the iPod Touch too (streaming via wifi)?

No! Wait, what? Whatever happened with the Android app we could see at Google I/O? I thought you was gonna release that first, I even bought a premium account when I saw that video. So, once again the iPhone users get the latest and hottest first.

Sorry for not getting it completely. Is offline mode only available when not connected at all (cell nor wifi), or am I going to be able to use offline playlists even if cell network is available?

bra skit gubbar! snacka om att ni kommer få mer premium-users ^^ (mig t.ex.)

Why only for premium? Free users should be able to listen without the offline function!

This will finally push me to go premium (assuming it gets accepted and published) - great! :) I echo the questions about Last.fm though - hoping it will scrobble!

Also client for Windows Mobile phones should be nice. Kind of interesting, that iPhone got first "official" mobile client, even there is known to be possible denial by Apple. And back to wait for WM client :)

Like many others, I would really like to know when the Android-version might show up.

I'm holding faith that the Android version is just around the corner. C'mon Spotify - don't fail us!

Looks great, been following this since the Android demo video. Hadn't considered Apple will have to approve it and may well not. Going to cause a bit of a storm and loads of and free PR for Spotify if it gets knocked back. This (assuming Apple act anti-competitively) and the Palm Pre sync shut-off makes me thankful I went with a more open platform in Android. Any details on that app? Please?

Fingers crossed. Don't let us down Apple.

Great news! I've ordered an Iphone and it should arrive on friday :-)

@thursday and @andysmith - I am also very disappointed this has been announced ahead of an Android version. Perhaps it was a requirement for approval by "the nice people at Apple"?

Great news, and I am now 100% ecstatic about being a subscriber :) You guys are changing the way we listen to music forever. You are awesome. Don't ever change.

I'll try and answer some questions: - Android is still in development but coming along nicely, as soon as we have more info we'll let you know. - Offline mode whether you have a connection or not. It's a great option if you don't have an unlimited data plan. - There is no scrobbling to last.fm included at the moment. - This will work on the iPod Touch

There's just one word to describe this: AWSOME! (Yes, the caps is needed). Now we just have to hope for Apple to approve this!

^ whoops, it would help if I signed in as my premium account :)

Oh, hang on, no scrobbling?! Noooooo! Ah well, c'est la vie.

Don't bother commenting about Android, judging by how many such comments already got ignored, yours will get ignored too. We live in the world where Apple gets all the a*s kissing and that won't change any time soon. Get over it!

I have a bad feeling about this app not being approved by Apple. I'll keep my fingers crossed though—I've been waiting for this since the day I became a premium subsriber.

This is amazing, and very good news. The utility of Spotify just grew to double of what it was - Spotify is now nearly a complete iTunes killer, ironically enough by releaseing an iPhone app. I was however expecting the Android version first. Since it's not even mentioned in the blog post I expect it is political ;) Any word on when it will arrive thought?

I would like an app that's just a remote control for Spotify running on my Mac Mini. Is something like that in the works?

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go premium now :D

Music is sleeping in on a monday morning
