Music streaming service agrees landmark deal with world’s premier distributor for independent musicians
Over one million further tracks to be made available to Spotify users
Spotify, the recently-launched subscription and ad-supported music streaming service, is thrilled to announce a major music deal with CD Baby, one of the world’s first and largest digital distributors of independent music.
CD Baby represents over 175,000 independent artists and the new licencing deal - the first to be signed since Spotify’s launch last October - means users will gain access to over one million new tracks, reinforcing our long-term aim of giving music fans the biggest and best music experience on the planet.
CD Baby, which joins Spotify alongside Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music Group, Merlin and The Orchard, specialises in both distribution and direct sales of physical compact discs and digital music downloads from independent musicians directly to consumers.
Since 2003, CD Baby has been a leading digital aggregator of artist-controlled music recordings, distributing content to hundreds of online digital music services. Independent artists represented by CD Baby include Colin Hay, Gary Jules, Stan Ridgway and Joe Purdy.
Daniel Ek, founder and CEO at Spotify, says: “From day one we wanted to create a catalogue with the widest possible choice for our users.
“CD Baby gives us access to the world's most immersive independent music catalogue and brings us even closer to our dream of gathering all the world's music in one place. Welcome on board!”
Spotify will provide further detail of the new artists added to the service once we begin adding content over the next few weeks.
