Payment

When trying to pay with my card, I get “Declined, please check your details”. My card details are correct. What is the problem?

To sign up for Spotify Premium, your payment card has to support two things:

Firstly, the card needs to be open for e-commerce, so that you can use it for online purchases (Verified by Visa/Mastercard Securecard card) and foreign purchases.

Secondly, the card has to be issued in the same country as the country set your Spotify profile. You can try to update your profile yourself to ensure the card and profile countries match. If you don’t have a card from a country where Spotify is available, unfortunately you won’t be able to subscribe to Spotify Premium.

If you have accidentally changed your profile country and have a problem updating, please contact Spotify Customer Service.

Is paying for Spotify online safe?

Yes, Spotify’s payment partners are PCI-certified, which is the global industry standard ensuring compliance to strict security and data protection standards.

Problems paying for your subscription

If you are seeing this page because you have clicked on a message within the Spotify player, it means that you are still a Spotify subscriber and we are currently trying to withdraw payment from your account. However, action is required from you because the reason for your payment failure(s) is is out of our control.

In a few days, if your payments continue to be declined, you will lose your subscription and begin to hear advertisements again (and if you are a Premium subscriber, you will lose access to Spotify Mobile).

Please read the following information to help us to make your payment successful. If you have started to see or hear advertising again, it means that we cannot continue to retry your payment. Please read below to see how you can help.

Payment by card

There are some main requirements that your card must fulfil in order to use it to subscribe to Spotify Premium or Spotify Unlimited.

  1. Ensure that your card has not expired. If you have received a new card, update your credit card details on your Subscription page
  2. The country set in your Spotify account profile must match the country where your card is registered. If you intend to use a payment method in another country, you can make this selection on your Subscription page (We can only accept payment from our launch countries).
  3. Your card should be enabled for e-commerce transactions (Verified by Visa/Mastercard SecureCode).
  4. Your card must also be open to be used for foreign purchases.

After verifying these with your bank, ensure you have enough funds in your account and give it another try from your Subscription page.

Payment by PayPal

Please contact PayPal in order to get more information on how to verify your account in your country.

If you have fulfilled the above criteria, and your payment has still failed, your card issuer (bank or credit card company) should be able to provide more information.

How can I switch my payment method between my PayPal and my payment card?

Please change your current payment method on your subscription page.

I don’t have a subscription. Why am I being charged for one?

If you’re being charged for a subscription that isn’t yours, we need to find out which Spotify account you are paying for.

We’d recommend that you double-check with your family and friends to see whether someone has been using your credit card details to pay for their Spotify subscription.

If you’re not successful, there is a direct way to find out which Spotify account is being funded by your credit card. To do so, you’ll have to get in touch with your bank. Please ask your bank for the exact date and time stamp of the last transaction going from your card account to Spotify, as well as the bank answer authorization code - a unique, six digit number. We can then use that information to pinpoint the transaction in our system and hopefully solve the problem.

How do I update my credit card details?

To update your credit card details, log in to the subscription page on your account pages and click “change payment method”.

How do I change my renewal date?

If you want to change the day that your recurring monthly payment is debited from your account, you’ll first need to cancel your current subscription. Once you have, the system will no longer charge your card on your current renewal day. Your subscription will expire and you’ll be back on our free service for a while.

Don’t panic. All your online playlists will still be available. You will lose your streaming offline playlists, but not for ever - you can sync them again later once you’ve re-subscribed.

Then, on the new renewal day of your choice, just sign up again for a Spotify Premium subscription. Your credit card will be charged on that day every month.

Why has my subscription expired? (Payment failed)

There are a couple of possible reasons that your subscription renewal has failed to be processed. Perhaps the credit card that you use the subscription has expired, or there could have been a connection problem to your bank’s network when the renewal was due to be processed.

Whatever the reason, if you’d like to continue with your Spotify subscription, please create a new subscription on your account’s subscription page.

In the unlikely event that this does not solve the problem, please try a different payment method for the subscription payments.

Why am I being charged more than once a month for my subscription?

There are a number of possible reasons for this:

  1. Someone else in your family, or maybe a friend, has access to your credit card details, and they have used it to pay for their own Spotify subscription.
  2. A person unknown to you has gained illegal access to your credit card details, and is now using them to pay for their own subscription.
  3. Instead of upgrading your existing Spotify account to Premium or Unlimited, you may have accidentally created a new account which you have been using.

What you should do:

  • We’d recommend that you double-check with your family and friends to see whether someone has been using your credit card details to pay for their Spotify subscription.
  • If you’re not successful, there is a direct way to find out which Spotify account is being funded by your credit card. To do so, you’ll have to get in touch with your bank. Please ask your bank for the exact date and time stamp of the last transaction going from your card account to Spotify, as well as the bank answer authorization code - a unique, six digit number.
  • We can then use that information to pinpoint the transaction in our system and hopefully solve the problem.
How can I see my subscription receipts?

You can access all your receipts from your Premium or Unlimited payments by logging in to your receipt page on our website.

How can I cancel my subscription?

If you have an active subscription to Spotify Unlimited or Spotify Premium, and you would like to stop the auto-renewal of the subscription, or if you would like to discontinue your participation in a free trial, you can do either on your Subscription page. This is one of your account pages on the Spotify website.

There are two ways to reach your account pages. You can either choose “Your account” from the “Help” menu within the Spotify application, or you can log in to the Spotify website, then click on your username in the corner of the screen to see page links, including “Subscription”.

Why am I being charged every month? I only paid for one month.

Spotify Premium and Spotify Unlimited are subscription services that charge recurring payments to your account until cancelled.

When you first entered your credit card or PayPal details and confirmed the payment, you were redirected to the confirmation page. This page highlights the details of your purchase and states that there will be a recurring payment until cancelled. We also send an email receipt to this effect.

The user agreement also made clear that the payment will recur each month if you do not cancel it.

Additionally, when you login to the Spotify website and click “Subscription”, it states that you have a recurring payment which can be cancelled.

If you would like to stop the recurring payments, you can do this on your subscription page.

I have a transaction described as "SPOTIFYSUBS" on my bank statement. What does it mean?

“SPOTIFYSUBS” is the transaction description associated to the payment for your Spotify subscription on your printed or online bank statement.

I have subscribed but I still get Spotify Free

Sometimes it can take a couple of minutes for the subscription to be updated to your Spotify application. To force this update please log out (File > Log out) and log in again.

You can also check yousubscription page on the website to see if your last payment went through or if you need to renew your subscription. If you still have problems, please contact us.

Why is there a 0.01 (or 1 NOK) transaction on my bank statement?

This amount is reserved from your bank account in order to authorize your credit card after you have updated the card details on our website. This is an authorization only. It means that this amount will be reserved for between 3 - 5 days, and then will be released. The amount is not debited and no money will be taken. You will be billed again as normal on your subscription renewal date to your new card details.
