We’ve gone and made Spotify even better. Along with our brand new App Finder you’ll find all these new goodies waiting for you with your next Spotify update.
Updated ‘What’s New’ page
What’s new? Well, the ‘What’s New’ page for a start! We’ve re-designed the page to be more intuitive and a whole lot prettier! You’ll also find trending playlists and top tracks amongst your friends and in your area.
Predictive search results
Start typing in the search bar and Spotify will suggest possible tracks, artists, albums, playlists and even people. How very helpful!
Playlist search
Yes, you read that right! Search results now include public playlists from all Spotify users.
New “Buddy List”
Get the low-down on what your friends are listening to right now with the new Buddy List. Talk about staying on top of trending music! You’ll be able to see and hear your friends’ starred tracks, as well as the music they’re adding to their playlists.
Now when they say ‘have you heard…?’, the answer is YES. Your Buddy List is the lovely ticker running down the right hand side of Spotify.
Add to Favourites
Now you can add your best friends to your People List for easy access. It’s good to keep your friends close!
Full-screen support
Mac OS X Lion users can now enjoy full-screen support.
The full update will be rolling out to all users soon. In the meantime, you can your hands on all these exciting new features in our Preview version. Enjoy!

Any chance you'll bring Growl support back to the Mac version? Since Growl went to version 1.3 in the Mac App Store, the functionality inside Spotify stopped working. Would love to have that back!
This is amaaaaaazing. Any chance of gapless playback coming soon..? :)
Thank you for this. Spotify forever! BTW Premium customer for one year now. Thank you for this gift. :)
Running the preview version since Weds and love it! However, what happened to the preference setting where I could choose to ignore (or more importantly NOT ignore) tracks not available in my country in playslists, search results, etc??
please please please please gapless playback :)
@boxeegrrrl: The setting I believe you mean ("Hide unplayable tracks") is still there, but I think it might have moved. It is now under Playback on the Preferences screen, but I can't remember where is was before.
This is all well and good, and I'm pleased to see some nice features and your dedication to improving spotify. But please can you introduce a 'sort playlists alphabetically' feature? It is a complete nightmare to locate playlists sometimes, especially on mobile devices. It's a feature that should be in every audio player. I've been asking you about this for nearly three years and never had a response, and I am a paying subscriber for the same amount of time. I've even blogged about it! It's so frustrating to not be able to sort my playlists quickly and conveniently. Keep up the good work, but please spend some time looking at ways to make the client more user friendly. It's much more useful than an app store.
great, but like the other guys said..gapless playback is needed! the current lack of it is ruining some of my favourite albums
Agree with @boozler. Love Spotify, I'm a premium subscriber and I've used it every day for over a year. But it would be so much better if it had features for sorting playlists, the starred tracks thing is no use if you want to listen to full albums.
Thanks for the new features, it would be nice to build a collection of albums instead of having to make a playlist for each one.
Will all those exitig stuff be present in the spotify linux preview release?
For all iPad lovers. In Spotify currently highest priority for the iPad application!
@gadgetchannel, thanks I think it was there before too and I kept missing it! :) >>the starred tracks thing is no use if you want to listen to full albums. On the iOS app: select a track (from the starred list or anywhere), start playing it, tap screen, and the first thing listed is the album (or "cd single") that track came from. tap that and you're on your way. Or, just search for the album directly ;) agree: must have gapless playback!
I've had big ideas for apps for years, but they really need the right platform to take off. I think Spotify has all I'll need, so I'm really excited about your idea! Although I've updated to the latest OSX version (0.6.5.2.gce2a2375), I don't see the App Finder :-/ ... will it be enabled soon? How do I get started creating an app ??
Please please please update the Android app. It looks and functions like poo compared to the other mobile Spotify apps. =(
It would have been great if the artist pages where cleaned up. It's a living nighmare to find an album on f ex Eric Claptons page (maybe sort the albums in studio albums, live albums, re-issues, and compilation folders). A better compilation systen would have been great, too.
Great new features! I love the design of the new What's New page. I do wish you'd take a cue from Zune though in regard to an attractive Now Playing screen. Some of us enjoy leaving Zune open on another screen or leaving it up on the main screen while we're doing something away from our computer (e.g. housework), and that provides a fantastic user experience because of the niceties of the Now Playing screen (artist photos, colourful gradients, the visualisation at the bottom etc.) I've switched from Zune to Spotify at the moment because I enjoy sharing my listens with Facebook friends, but missing the great Zune user experience could entice me to go back.
Just piping in with other comments here. Cool features, no doubt, but it still feels like some basic stuff is missing. * Gapless playback * Stop confusing artists with similar names (eg "snoblind" and "snöblind")
Equalizer! It's an audio player without an equalizer! For my children's sake, please give me an equalizer!
was it all in my head or did I notice all My playlist that were made available offline get bumped up to the top of my playlists. That was really nice...didn't have to scroll all the way down to my newer playlists. But then it went back to the way it was. :-(
yay! I would love it if the name of the song & artist would scroll across the tab on the task bar so I don't have to click out of what I'm doing to check a song I don't know... :)
Love everything except prefer being able to explore my friends list in the right rail instead of having to choose favorites. Manually selecting "favorites" out of hundreds of friends who may or may not being using spotify is unwanted work, not a feature!
How bout a app for Kindle Fire???? Would also love to buy some gift certificates in the US for Xmas
Where is the Windows 7 media center interface? Its only the most popular large screen interface on the planet, might be nice to support it.
Fancy features should be less important than basic functionality. Gapless, gapless, GAPLESS!
Love the new apps - brilliant. Any chance of persuading Sonos to build an app? Would hopefully allow control in one place and make sure that proper Spotify functionality (example, creating playlists and starring tracks) is available whilst controlling Sonos - stuff that's sadly lacking from their client.
Not so fond of the What's New screen..... You really don't need the CoverFlow effect, it takes too much space and doesn't add anything from a user perspective. Besides, the content of it doesn't seem to based on my profile... All the content below the CoverFlow is great! Would be nice if you could make the width of the content dynamic, because I see an awful lot of empty grey on my widescreen display...
For the playlist search results, it would be to put each of them the number of titles it contains.
I am not seeing the apps on my sidebar? Do I need to update the software?
oh man, what a disaster. please DO NOT spread that new version until it works with WINE because right now, it's the first spotify version who does not. all we get is a PERPETUAL BLACK SCREEN when running the installer... wtf ???
This is freaking awesome!! All I ever wanted in Spotify and all of the sudden you realease all together! I just can't believe it! I love you guys!
Agree with @boozler too. The playlist display is still not convenient. Maybe should it be customizable ? Something like the the Itunes navigation column to classify the playlists would be a big improvement. Nice features anyway.
Spotify is nice, if it would support DLNA it would be great... Please add support for DLNA.
Some nice shiny toys to play with. However, there's some basic's that really need fixing first: 1. Allow users to search by label and genre. A proper listing of new releases or ability to search by release date would be a big help. The metadata is there so why not use it? 2. Ability to sort music by album title, artist, genre, era etc 3. Smart playlists - iTunes makes life so much easier when it comes to how you slice and dice your music. Would be nice to pull up all albums you've playlisted in the last month by a certain genre, for example. Also allow users to define their own genres as with iTunes 4. Sort out the iPhone app. Crashes all the time, especially for users with large playlists. 5. Allow the desktop app to show all albums/playlists in the Device mode even for us users with a large number of playlists (currently I can only see about 50-60% of mine) 6. Make the New Releases section in What's New complete (I want to see EVERYTHING added that week, not a bizarre selection of hand-picked releases). And U want it searchable by week, genre and label. Sites like Spotimy is helpful, but is subject to the vagaries of their personal classifications in terms of whats new or interesting. Would be good to know what back-catalog is added every week, and not find it months later by luck or happenstance. 7. The Radio function is hopeless. Get rid of it ! 8. Oh...gapless audio, please Good news.... Moving the New Playlist function to the top is a big improvement Liking the apps especially Last.fm and Songkick Predictive and playlist search is good, but as above why not allow users to search by label, genre, release date.
Hey @citizenwatt, you've been able to search by label & genre with google-esque operators since 2009: https://www.spotify.com/us/blog/archives/2009/05/20/spotify-0315-with-label-search/ & https://www.spotify.com/us/blog/archives/2009/03/24/spotify-genres-the-full-listing/ Also eager to see these features in the Linux version!
The new version is GREAT! But please add a filter in the people section that lets you search for people and hide those who don´t have spotify and only have a facebook account. Because it is hard to find your spotify friends among all your facebook friends! I think the spotify apps will open up many new unseen opportunities.
and the ability to add artists to the favorite sidebar on the right and add a notification when a new album or song releases... this way you could check your favorite artists fast :)
Hey adsti3, yep I already knew that. It doesn't list every album and is a clumsy way to find what you want (and not very user-friendly)! Unless you are really really specific and search for label and a specific year you often won't get what you are looking for. For major labels you might as well forget it. eMusic always offered lots of ways to search it's catalogue which made it really user friendly...
Forgot how rubbish, genre search is. Just tried it for British Psychedelia, most of the results are laughable (Yes 'Drama'), however this is nothing to do with Spotify but the record labels. Would be more useful to merge the data with the Last.fm API which is a lot more accurate when it comes to genres as takes into account how fans classify the music, not labels (who are generally clueless). Label's generally don't care about getting their metadata right, even though it could be an incredibly useful tool that would help them make money. Ho hum
Oh spotify! Thank you a lot for making it impossible to use your service after almost a year of Spotify Premium. Spotify now requires PayPal to have a creditcard linked to your account. This takes away the handiness of PayPal alltogether. I have no creditcard, and neither does more than half of your Dutch subscribers. Dammit dammit dammit..
@citizenwatt You can already search by label and genres but they've unfortunally they didn't believe not all users of Spotify is 'code monkeys', why don't put just a selection bar somewhere so we all can access these features. In some ways, Spotify seems to be more designed for programmers and power users (apps, APIs, not wrong at all) but should consider thinking about the percent of the user base who don't is going to do more advanced things with computers than setting up a piece of text in Word.
@prodygee I believe the credit card requirement is probably to prevent users outside the services launch countries to sign up and access the music, maybe a direction from the labels! Again, these regulation is never Spotify's fault, I bet it's the content owners who set up these regulations on Spotify.
@citizenwatt I hope the Spotify Apps will solve this problem as developers and service may add new great ways to discover music. Stay tuned! @citizienwatt Maybe the search feature were sold to the major labels? It never lists independent, non-mainstream and unsigned bands correctly.
Is anyone else having crashing problems with new Spotify Beta with apps? Version 0.8.0.535g7d1e7e3b. It opens been when I click on anything it crashes.
OK, now then it's working. Was unable to run it from 0930-0954 Central time. Now it seems to be functioning. I tried restart PC and reinstall Spotify Beta, nothing fixed it. Just tried running ti again and now it's fine. Just FYI
Why does the people section show those who don´t have Spotify? At the moment I live in Australia and hence only my Swede-friends have Spotify; half of the people on my Facebook friendslist are unable to get Spotify. At least add an option to filter those who do not have Spotify out of the visible list! Other than that, great update!
Preview version is nice, but Crashes frequently, especially when I want to logout.
For those fo you having as much trouble as I did figuring out how to get this udpate: https://www.spotify.com/us/download/previews/
Those GNU/Linux users having problems with Spotify running in WINE (crashes on booting) must remove Spotify from their Facebook account (http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy§ion=apps), and Spotify will work again.
im diggin all the new features on the beta preview...however, i do not like the way it sends albums i share with someone to their facebook email now. so far, my friends do not enjoy getting them that way either. It especially should not happen unless the user approves it to come to their email.
