Lots of exciting changes in Spotify recently and we thought we’d walk you through all the latest features!
Turn up the Radio
Yes, that’s right - in addition to Artist radio, you can now serendipitously discover your next favorite song with Radio.
Just click on the Radio tab and select a genre of your fancy to get the tunes flowing!
Share Button
We’ve added a Share button within the client to make sharing the music even easier. Spot it next to all your tracks and playlists!
Playlist Sharing
You asked for it and we listened! You can now share an entire playlist too! Simply click on the Share button which will open up a dialog box for one click sharing to Facebook, Twitter and all your Spotify friends. To share with the buddies on your People list, click on the Spotify tab within this box and start typing your friend’s name - autocomplete will make the process simple and instant.
Smart Inbox
Our Inbox now has a set of icons to indicate whether the shared goodie is a track, an album (disc icon), or a playlist (note icon). We also pumped up the Inbox tab notification to a vibrant red so you can easily see when someone has sent you something!
You must log in to comment
You forgot: Forced Facebook - Now you are required to create a Facebook account before registering to Spotify. Also we put the share button in front of every track name so it's as annoying as possible. Customers without Facebook are not of any value to us.
The best new features you could introduce just about now would be: 1) Option in the preferences to get rid of ALL facebook features and reminders in the Spotify client. 2) Return the Spotify stand-alone registration option without forced faceborg registration that done according to some of your instructions would violate faceborg terms of use. And the one you most probably are planning to implement soon: 3) Cancel the mandatory faceborg login of existing paying customers.
Is there something new with Radio? Because I swore it was always there… Also, I agree that putting a white share button beside each song is kind of cluttering up the song list with something of limited utility (at least for me, I can't speak for others). I'm a little worried that your new-found focus on social is going to degrade Spotify's core listening experience by shoving features down users' throats whether they find them useful or not. All I'm saying is be wary of tacking stuff on just to make Spotify more "social". Having said all that, your service is still awesome and I'm still a very happy paying customer.
Hi Candice, good to know you read my blog :p
I'm glad you guys are constantly making upgrades.. the service keeps getting better and better.. On that note.. I really enjoy the commenting feature (when you share a song with someone, you can add a comment), but there's no way for them to respond to that comment.. currently I have to email or fb friends a response. It would be really great if you songs shared between friends could also have a running comment thread.. It does not have to be full of functionality, but a common noting area would be amazing. Cheers, Steve
The Facebook integration in its current form IS an annoyance – I think if more thought was put into the location of the share icon, rather than just dropping it in front of the track name, and if there was an option to disable the feature, people wouldn't be as inclined to think they were being forced into using FB. People use Spotify because they love music. Sharing should be a feature but not compulsory.
Uh? Will this forced Facebook registration affect my current account? I do not wish to connect with Facebook.
Great idea... only one very BIG problem. Very few people use a desktop version of Facebook. Get this working in a mobile version and you might be on to something. READ as... Ain't ever gonna happen.
Just FYI, if you people didn't know...Facebook has 800 million subscribers. The majority of time spent on the INTERNET is on Facebook. Spotify probably got this amazing promotion for their brand on the condition that it would be linked with Facebook. It worked, because guess what? I found Spotify on Facebook, and I love the integration. I got a premium account today. So I just replaced one of you, who decided to cancel. I'm sure many many many many more people will join Spotify than the people leaving in a huff right now. I really don't understand what all the fuss is about, seeing that you can just have a empty Facebook for your Spotify and it will change absolutely nothing about your account. Take a chill pill people.
Another option for the Facebook haters, is to go in the security settings of your FB account and change facebook to always use a secure connection. With this spotify will fail to connect to your account, but you can still listen to music ofcourse.
Where did the decade selection go from the radio? Previously it was possible to select, for example, "blues from the 40-50s". Now I can only select "blues" and the radio mostly pushes some new crap I don't really want to hear while in the mood for oldies. Yet another crappy "improvement"!
Why can´t I buy unlimited ? "Purchase is currently not available".
@ 121069471 Integrating with FB is not a problem, I like it too. Shoving FB down everyones throat is not acceptable and from a commercial tying perspective even illegal in most European countries. It's extremely disrespectful to paying customers. I liked Spotify being independent, but it seems the road to FB aquisition has been set. Time to look around again. When I will have forced FB integration for my paid premium I'm gone to another provider.
@ cccp88 : that failure tells a lot :-)
@mattvague - Radio wasn't available to US users until this week.
I started up Spotify today and it asked if wanted to link to Facebook. I clicked on NO but some of my playlists were still public. Why the hell don't you ask permission to do something rather than have us wade through all our settings to disable this rape of privacy. Be careful Spotify - you could lose out big. Also you may like to check out this link: http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/can_you_sign_up_for_spotify_without_facebook
Please, for the sake of my sanity, put the decade selection back into the radio section. I do not want to hear a 60's surf tune whilst attempting to listen to 'Rock' and having to skip to the next song from the 90's is highly annoying.
This 'upgrade' has made the radio worse. - By removing the ability select eras (60s, 70s etc) as well as genre I now get loads of tunes I know I will not like. example: before I could choose 'blues' and select 60's, 70's and I would only get blues from the 60's or 70's - now I get loads of nasty modern blues. Same with country or rock - most modern stuff is not to my taste so by specifying and era I could guarantee country or rock that was more to my taste. PLEASE bring this feature back - the radio as it is now plays about 10% songs I want to listen to. Genres alone are just too broad.
Indeed, at least the eras mad the algoritm a bit better, but best thing Spotify could do is to buy the Last.FM algoritm for radio or similar artists, it's a million times better!
I use the decades selector a lot when I listen the radio. Please put it back, this is a downgrade.
i understand the profit factor for spotify but i cnt afford spotify anymore. i only have alittle more time left in my subscrpition then i have to deal with the free subscription which has all the adds and crap. i personally dont like the factor of having intruptions when im listening to music. all im asking is that spotify would give each listener the same product. just because you cant afford the paid subscrption doesnt mean that ur poor n have to be downgraded. i just think allitle improvement is all the free subscriptions need. but anyways i love Spotify! if music for free! its my daily music on my ipod.
It'd be nice to have a "repeat 1" button;)
90 seconds from closing my account and not using Spotify! Why - Your forced Facebook account registration is just so piece of s h i t. If You have any respect on Your old customers and any respect on new ones - You're gonna just change this "brown tongue action" and playing with FB. Touche!
@afront - We love your blog! Avid readers :)
An option to remove the share button next to the song title in the bottom left and replace it with a star (which was there before) would be really appreciated. I don't like to spam my friends with spotify (if I know someone has spotify I will send it to their inbox) but I do like being able to star and unstar a song directly from there.
Please add option to remove all traces of Facebook for paying customers. This is a showstopper for me and I -will- go elsewhere if I have to deal with Facebook. Some of us have lives and DON'T spend all day on Facebook (as one commenter said). Matter of fact, many of us don't spend ANY of our day on Facebook.
Another feature, iPhone specific: in iOS 5, audio tags (artist, song, etc) can be sent to external Bluetooth players (for instance, the myGig unit in my Jeep). The iPod app has it enabled already, it would be great of spotify turned on that feature.
Whats up that only that the music i own is the only one that can go into my ipod... i got a premium subscription thinking i could add all of my starred music... im really unhappy
I agree with all of you out there thinking that the new "improved" radio function is a downgrade. Please put the old genre and decade selectors back!!!!!!
I would prefer if there was an arrow icon displayed on the last row of every track which would have all the purchase, sharing and future options that tracks require. Spotify should keep the interface simple, not to have it full of buttons by the year 2005.
Please bring the decade selection back. I've been paying for Spotify since finding the service in 2010 and did so purely because I could create a radio station with my favorite decades, now I am having to listen to more songs I could hear on the radio.....for free.....
I don't want a fucking post on my wall every time I listen to a god damned song. And every time I disable that particular feature in facebook I get a popup in spotify asking me to agree to the fucking settings I just fucking changed. This is fucking STUPID.
This 'upgrade' makes me feel like i am paying for the opposite of innovation. FORCING an FACEBOOK account ? for real!? Removing radio selection options ? Cluttering the play-list with unnecessary icons? Are these decisions made by accountants instead of basing them on innovating minds and the feedback of customers? I am paying for the premium account, but if this does not change on short term, i will go to the competition.. so long for the accountants ;) other than that i still love spotify i'm afraid :D
Is it really necessary the big F in the spotify window??? really necessary?? and really necessary to do this pact between facebook and spotify COMPULSORY???? I am going to vomit!!!!!! Premium vomit btw, will have to think twice whether I stay
I am really disappointed with the level of facebook integration, a little bit was ok but this whole make an account with facebook is bollocks, There needs to be and option to opt out of it. I am paying to use spotify not to use facebook. If this is not sorted I am definitely moving away from spotify even though so far its been great.
I think there are two bad updates 1. Radio Where is the year-sliders? 2. Facebook Luckily I don't need to have an facebook account. But I am scared that I need to get one soon, I guess that Spotify is forcing everybody to have facebook soon. You say that it is now "smoother" to have Spotify. Is it, really? Now you need to register TWO accounts instead of one. And what about the peoples that is under 13 years old?
It is one thing to have facebook as optional. That is good for me. But when you forcing it into peoples. That just sucks.
The Radio is absolutely a killer feature. I'm just using Spotify for a short time and I'm absolutely fan of this radio.
Facebook doesn't ask for money, of course, their product is the people. Very lucrative product for ads. Spotify, what offers a paid service, has knelt to the product of people. Without doubt will rise its number of users, but who is paying, Spotify? do you think the paying users are Facebook addicts? If you do this integration an option, it may be. But if you do it compulsory and limiting the ways to use Spotify and connect with the people you choose narrowing the spectrum to Facebook, you will lose many of your loyal subscribers. Who is your people? Ps. thanks for retiring the appalling F (hope it does not come back again)
When can we get Spotify Radio on the iPhone App? Seriously, this has been a request for 2 years now. It cannot be that hard!
Have already voted with my feet. Was a paying user and hoped that I was paying for music not for sharing. I was wrong. So long and thanks all the F :-)
What good are all these new features when you just keep removing more and more music?
So I love the Sharing part of Spotify. BUt how do you respond to a friend who has sent you a song/album? Need to be able to do that.
As a premium user, I'm a little bothered by the Facebook "requirement"...my least favorite FB feature is the constant changes that require me to move to some new way of interacting and sharing, but FB is free. I'm a premium user, so I'm paying for features that I'm not comfortable with. Please make the FB app optional, or if it is and I just don't get it, make it easy for me to disable without errors and nagging. And I second the comment reply option.
Is it just me, or has the commercials become really long? Because, as i am a 16 year old w/o a Visa or MasterCard, i can not get premium, and my parents "refuse to let me use my money on something as silly as listening to music online." Therefore i would really appreciate if you could shorten the commercial time. But although annoying, commercials, i can live with. It is the fact that the songs get that purple color after only 5 listenings that really bothers me. And the fact that they never reset. PLEASE, make it so that the songs reset after 1-2 months. Thank you!
I second the opinion of FB integration is a bit over the top to please FB. I say this as being a long-time Premium subscriber. What is worse is that this "social" update has caused the Spotify app on my Ipod to crash within 5-10 minutes after being launched. I have reported this as a bug. What annoys me even more than the fact that the update has broken my Spotify iPod app is that proper testing has NOT been done before launch. You are effectively asking your PAYING customers to test the software for you. Come on! Do it all over again, and do it RIGHT! The partnership with FB cannot mean more than existing LOYAL (?) customers.
Any chance you could make it so the Unlimited service permitted the high-quality streams? As it stands it seems a pointless upgrade as (1) you can get around the "no ads" by simply double-clicking the next track quickly before the current one ends to avoid the ad playing; and (2) get around the monthly limit by signing-up with multiple accounts and switching to a different one when one runs out. Being able to enjoy the high-quality streams would give me reason to stary paying. I don't have a mobile compatible with Spotify Mobile so that's one main upgrade feature out. I've got my local music on my iPod and mobile already, so not fussed about the cloud access. And I'm not bothered about offline modes, streaming to Sonos (I'd imagine very few users have such systems compared to just taking a laptop into a different room or buying the tracks then playing them via headphones on a portable music player) or access to content early (it'll be leaked elsewhere on the web: YouTube most likely). Can't help but feel the middle tier doesn't really add much currently.
I like Spotify, but can't understand why they fail to make a native Ipad app? What's the problem guys?? The iphone app does work, but is SOOO limited... Seriously, hire another programmer and get it done already!! I'm paying for hus goddamit.
One thing I ask from you guys at Spotify....can you make sure that you put the right dates for when the albums came out??? I hate seeing an album that came out in 1989, and spotify says it came out in 2000!!!
Hej Is it only me who can't see the new smart inbox? I still see the star, but no icon whether it's an album, track or artist
