Win tickets to see Mahler’s Eighth Symphony at The Royal Albert Hall

To mark the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death, five choirs including the Vivace Chorus and the London Symphony Chorus, are combining with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to perform one of the greatest and most ambitious choral works, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony – the Symphony of a Thousand.

This highlight of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s London concert season will involve a full symphony orchestra, eight soloists, two huge choruses and a children’s choir. We have two pairs of tickets to give away to Spotify Premium subscribers for this wonderful event courtesy of our friends at The Royal Albert Hall.

To enter simply post a link to your favourite Mahler piece as well as answer the question - Which symphony is Mahlers longest piece of work?

We’ll pick and notify winners later this month, good luck!

http://open.spotify.com/album/3LHLB515I0fP9PkjrauPey Mahler's 5th by Bernstein Isn't answering the question kind of pointless here for anyone not posting first? 3rd symphony

http://open.spotify.com/track/0pSvk2nj6Gep5gTCJMP2uw is my absolute favourite. Symphony #1 in D Major. 3rd Symphony is the longest! This would be a great way to celebrate my birthday - as it is the day before, on the 14th. I'm just sayin' ;)

Yep! It is pointless. Though I think it's the second symphony that is the longest is it not?

The longest piece is his 10th Symphony, it took him forever to finish... OK, it's his 3rd Symphony, takes 90-100 minutes to perform. Favourite piece?... Not much easier than picking up a favourite Beatles or Dylan song. Right now I'd say this one: http://open.spotify.com/album/2kxAYe1r5R8BMBiEpWBPXl The 9th Symphony, if you meant track, then it's the 2nd movement. The recording by Dohnanyi and The Cleveland Orchestra is a underrated gem IMO.

http://open.spotify.com/track/2YfdwXOY314vx36a9cnL8C Mahler's 4th by Bernstein/Concertgebouw A piece which perfects the great and magnicifent 3rd symphony, which is the longest.

Nope, I'm an idiot, it is: Symphony No. 3 - 90 to 100 minutes, whereas No. 2 is only 80 - 90 minutes...doh!

Damn! And the link to my favourite!! http://open.spotify.com/track/47hY3MseoOLE44uYw9UVaI So in conclusion, symphony no.3 - last time I post!!

Spotify has a real gem of a Mahler recording here: http://open.spotify.com/track/2lPRXj2jelb2i7RksOcP9p Bernstein's New York Philarmonic, with Symphony No.3 (Mahler's longest) true musical poetry.

Mahler's Symphony No.3 in D minor - almost 2 hours long. http://open.spotify.com/track/0a6BtQY0RcAOBttt6MN6sB (great box set with symphonies 1 - 8!) Sounds an awesome concert!

I really love all Mahler's work and thanks to Spotify I listen not only to his symphonies but to the lieder as well. My best choice is probably Der Abschied, from das Lied von der Erde, which might be above everything else, especially with the unique Dame J Baker and the great Malherian conductor R Kubelik. The answer to the question is that Symphony n°3 is the longest. Hope every G Mahler's fan enjoy this G Mahler year anyway.

My favorite: spotify:track:6x87jrE2HyvyMMBC9bpvsu Symphony No.3 in D minor is the longest.

Mahler's 5th Symphony is my favourite (http://open.spotify.com/track/0uTTsDcgA69Gvb65qfl4ez) and his longest work is his 3rd Symphony (http://open.spotify.com/album/2m4vL5luHiXfUbVi6l7CkL).

My favorite has to be Symphony no 2, mainly due to the fact that it contains the hauntingly beutiful Urlicht-movement. http://open.spotify.com/track/1kNhlntMOqkn4j8ePUTR8A The longest piece of work is Symphony no 3.

Honestly really hard to pick a Mahler favourite but I guess we all have to choose one... http://open.spotify.com/track/09Q5aoWB1BoQ0YpaJ01X8h Nun seh' ich wohl, warum so dunkle Flammen, from the Kindertotenlieder. Incredibly emotional, although almost everything Mahler has the same effect really! And like everyone else says, his longest symphony is Symphony no. 3 :-D Good luck everyone and I'm sure whoever wins will have an amazing time!

http://open.spotify.com/track/0pSvk2nj6Gep5gTCJMP2uw The third movement is generally my favourite of any symphony... three is just the magic number.. so there we have the link to the third movement of Mahler's Titan. Incidentally the longest symphony is his third. Find it here :) http://open.spotify.com/album/2m4vL5luHiXfUbVi6l7CkL

Tricky one, but I'd say my favorite Mahler piece at the moment is "Blumine", the rejected 2nd Movement from the Titan symphony. spotify:track:0Sve5waPhGHtcSmZVKRGrj As for his longest piece, it is of course, Symphony no.3 Good luck, and enjoy the wonderful performance to come!

The longest piece is Symphony No.3 http://open.spotify.com/track/0cqcRqZgkNHanWQ8slYA0v It's my favorite. Everyday, it makes me a piece of peace. Beautiful...

Favourite: http://open.spotify.com/track/3uNh1Oi6y56ymIGQqvokLK Longest: Symphony No.3

Symphony n°9 is my favourite Mahler piece, the first time I heard it was in Toulouse, France, played by its very good city orchestra (15 years ago !). Here is a link to a part of its interpretation : http://open.spotify.com/track/0DbKb1ZgLITp5OBvqDAhJG The longest symphony Mahler created was the 3rd one.

Can you really ever have long enough Mahler? As a double bass player, I have to admit that I love the opening movement of the second symphony! spotify:track:2Ie1DH6pcw4JUTUnh5ERXK

Mahler V, Berliner philamoniker with Haitink. Great opening! http://open.spotify.com/track/3YUeXdX6hgPM3aiZLC0nEz And Symphony 3 is his longest

As noted in previous comments and wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._3_(Mahler), 3er is the longest Mahler work. My favourite is Symphony nº 1, spotify:album:6U7kTTxmQAyf5srD7FVaFr

Was trying to work out if it was a trick question (Mahler wrote a couple of Opera's which I think have mostly been lost) but I think it does have to be his 3rd Symphony. One of my favorite Mahler works is his 9th Symphony - particularly the last 'Adagio' movement. The heavy use of strings, the initial low sultry melodic lines - very moving. His experiments with tonality produced some wonderfully poignant and personal music throughout the whole of his life. http://open.spotify.com/track/7t46ZHfteiwZxBj02uZgD8

It is definitely the 3rd symphony! My favorite piece is the Symphony 5&7. Dark and so intense! http://open.spotify.com/track/5KupR68NUoDSmBIaHMFSse

My favorite, Mahler's Symphony 5 in C sharp minor. [http://open.spotify.com/track/0nMtoXJWjqidjZz3i6cWjT] 3rd symphony the longest. To Spotify!

http://open.spotify.com/artist/6jkpnXRccfnmow5f4SfWx3 The answer to the question is also my favourite Mahler work, his 3rd symphony! Fantastic trombone writing.

The longest Mahler symphony is his amazing 95 minutes long 3rd symphony. He was a pure genius...

I love this Mahler track it is so gentle and drifting: spotify:track:0cqcRqZgkNHanWQ8slYA0v His 3rd Symphony is the longest.

http://open.spotify.com/track/0cqcRqZgkNHanWQ8slYA0v 3rd Symphony

http://open.spotify.com/track/0ZM5MAnZsERMOQTeQbAxMl This is my answer to both questions; it is both his longest and the best - it has everything. (Symphony No. 3.)

My favorite is the 5th symphony in C Sharp Minor - 4th movement: http://open.spotify.com/track/6gK5JVQtJEIH3A6Ul8VZKN Mahler's longest work is the 3rd symphony.

The third without any doubt. http://open.spotify.com/track/189mPhxzXXYafK6M584fJF
