Earlier today we were alerted by a number of users that Spotify was being blocked by various versions of Symantec/Norton anti-virus products. This caused the anti-virus software to falsely identify Spotify as a Trojan. I can assure you that Spotify is not a Trojan, this is simply a misunderstanding on Symantec’s part.
Both Spotify and Symantec are aware of this problem and they have been very quick to respond and release an update for their anti-virus software.
We’re told by Symantec that if you are running SEP or SAV, then Rapid Release definitions have just been released dated 28/01/2010 rev. 2 - these also have the fix included. They will be included in the next full release for both SEP and SAV. You can also manually download and install the new Rapid Release if you’d like. More help can be found on our forums.
If you need to reinstall Spotify it is quite easy to do and you can always log in with your existing account, no need to create a new one. You can download the installer from our website if necessary. Once you’ve restarted Spotify you may need to go to the Internet Properties in Symantec/Norton and ensure that Spotify is not blocked so it can connect to the internet.
We’re really sorry that this happened but we hope everyone can get back up and running soon.
Update: Symantec have updated Norton Antivirus (using Live Update). After that you may nee to restore the spotify.exe -file from the Antivirus quarantine list and Spotify should then work.

is still coming up as a trojan and cant reinstall either...not sure wot to do?
Its not just symantec - its Norton too. Thinks its a trojan horse, and there appears to be NO WAY to exlude spotify from its search
I can't get it to work either...what is a SEP or SAV anyway? I have Norton internet security 2009 installed, and i've tried re-installing spotify,it still blocks it,even though i've got the newest updates on Norton! What to do?
Symantecs fix in the link above does not work! Spotify is still a Trojan Horse!
Hi - I am having the same problem. This morning Norton uninstalled spotify due to trojan horse problem. Still not possible to re-install spotify, Norton refuses. (just tested)
Nothing has changed. Everytime I try to reinstall Spotify, Norton 360 idenifies the program as a Trojan. I don't know what to do...
Same problem here with Norton 360 identifying Spotify as a trojan horse.
I also have Norton, told it to accept Spotify after it removed it from my computer. I still can't it to reload Spotify. Help please
I also have Norton internet security 2009. I've tried to re-installing Spotify, but it dosen´t work. Norton thinks that Spotify its a trojan horse.
You can't simply re-install Spotify, you need to update Symantec/Norton via the live updates or manually from their site as explained here: http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/spotify_defined_as_a_trojan_by_symantec#reply_1838296
Some of the songs on Spotify are like brain viruses - I can't stop singing them in my head ... so maybe Symantec has a point?
Same problem here with symantec and I just DL the last update...
Same problem here - Norton refuses to allow new download of Spotify. Identifies it as Trojan. Asked Norton to 'restore' the Trojan - still made no difference. Are Spotify or Norton doing anything to fix this????
"You can also manually download and install the new Rapid Release if you’d like". i did it and norton doesn´t block spotify anymore, but i can´t log in to spotify and it says "no internet connection" when i try. What shall i do? Change proxy settings some how?
I have Norton 360. Still won't let me reinstall although i have run updates. Still says Trojan Horse. I am green when it comes to computer technology. I just want it to work!!
Unfortunately I had to unistall and tried to re-install Spotify, again its giving the search engine Missing Shortcut Windows is searching for Spotify.exe. To locate the file click Browse, again by clicking no success.. it is still giving me the Trojan virus at 13:15 UK time.
I updated my Symantec End Point (SEP) with the most recent Rapid Release Virus Definitions - but still had problems reinstalling Spotify. Temporarily disabled SEP, reinstalled Spotify, turned SEP back on and it's all working a treat!
I have Norton Internet Security 2009 and Iv'e manually downloaded the Rapid Release and now Norton dosen't block Spotify anymore, but when I try to log in, It says " No internet connection"....What do I do now? I'm not very good at computer stuff...
I've got Norton 360. I've updated it. Still doesn't work :(((
i downloaded and installed this symrapidreleasedefsv5i32.exe but it still doesnt work.
I've had the same problem, and when I tried to reinstall my Norton 360 wouldn't allow it. So I turned of the Firewall and Auto-Protect for a short period of time to allow it to install and it worked, and its working ok now. But Norton still thinks its a trojan and wants the program to stop running but you can keep it running, I just don't know how to get Norton to ignore this.
this sucks so bad. why is this happening now? why this sudden change in the systems??? THE SPOTIFY-TEAM AND NORTON SYMANTEC NEEDS TO FIX THIS NOW! :/
I 'solved' this by adding the %programfiles%\Spotify directory to my exeption list in Symantec. After a reinstall of Spotify I changed this to include Spotify.exe instead of the whole directory. This is still a dirty fix until I recieve new files from Symantec. Remember to remove this entry after new signature files are available. Rock on
It's the same for me. Have tried a couple of times now and it still doesn't work... What should I do?
Can´t get it to work, I´ve tried several times to uninstall and reinstall it again, but it still doesn´t work. Nothing works.
I'm using Norton 360. I've just run an update scan and tried re-downloading spotify at 1.45pm GMT. Norton is still recognising it as a Trojan Horse. Help - I want my music back!
I fixed mine an hour ago, and before that I tried live-update on norton several times with no result. It worked after I installed this from Symantec's ftp (SEP): ftp://ftp.symantec.com/AVDEFS/norton_antivirus/rapidrelease/symrapidreleasedefsv5i32.exe After this, I installed spotify with no problems.
Yep! using Norton 360 and Spotify is still being labelled a trojan.
Lucky for having a tech guy.. He managed to sort it out for me. Glad to be back on with Spotify.
Still not happening- Norton still blcking this as a trojan
I didn't understand the: Symantec's ftp (SEP): ftp://ftp.symantec.com/AVDEFS/norton_antivirus/rapidrelease/symrapidreleasedefsv5i32 So, i disabled the wretched thing, set it to become active again after i re-downloaded spotify and restarted the computer. I'm happy again now!
I have norton antivirus 360 2009 and it says that spotify has a trojan virus in it. what to do?
oops!...spoke too soon. till blocking it as a trojan. Come on Symantec, get this sorted out!!!!!
same here as "dasty1" I wanna know how it can be fixed!
Thats it! I've had enough with Norton (again). Uninstalling norton and installing the good old Avira&Comodo combo. Every time when I have used Norton it did something like this, last time a virus went past the firewall and the antivirus was helpless against it.
how and when can you fix this? are we still paying if its taking long time?
Hi everyone, i had the same problem but got it working now and this what i did... First... if you have norton on your system tray at the bottom right of your screen right click the icon and disable firewall and auto-protect. Go into my computer, program files, spotify and uninstall spotify using the uninstall.exe file. Go into norton and settings, select the virus and spyware protection option and then select the file exceptions tab along the top, select new and add spotify to the exception. reinstall spotify and turn on your firewall/auto-protect to keep you protected. using the update from norton has not resolved the problem for me as it's still being id'd as a trojan but i'm sure a live update will fix this soon. :) let me know if this helps.
I just fixed it! :D I excluded Spotify from Norton's searches and Auto-Protect, then I disabled Norton while installing Spotify again. It works for now, I don't know if it'll crash again later though, but it seems to be fine. ^^
When is this gonna be sorted?? I understand that these things take time but what is the timeframe?? This is not good service!!!!
Lol awh, seems like I wasn't first after all. Well, it worked for me neil. ;P
If you have the problem that Norton blocks spotify from connecting then go to the internet properties of Norton and make sure that spotify is not blocked.
For those that have downloaded the Rapid Realease update for their product and no longer have Spotify identified as a Trojan. But, cannot get the product to connect. Have a look at the Firewall Rules you will most likely find that Spotify.exe is also blocked.
Oh my god. What a pain in the ass. I had to delete spotify, then turn off my anti virus for 15 minutes to re-download it, and then when I did it deleted ALL my music. FAIL.
Neither I can't download Spotify. It's still the message that a trojan has been blocked. What should I do? I'm not a computerfreak so I don't know much about about these things. Thanks!
Where in the Norton program can I see if Spotify is one of the blocked things?
I did as the information in the Spotify Blog told me to do. I downloaded the Rapid Release and downloaded Spotify again...and now it works. I think it´s important to download the right Rapid Release. Check out what version on the Norton Anti-Virus you have and download the right on. Hopefully you will get it to work!
Yeah, I'm downloading Rapid now. Let's see if I get it to work. Thanks
I just turned off the Norton 360. Downloaded Spotify and now it works. Try it!:)
i have done just like u did wendy, but like 15 times and now it works, but i have to reinstall the spotify all the time after i closed it, this is a problem that SPOTIFY HAVE TO FIX!
Im running Norton 360 ver 3.0; aslong as you download the correct update and run it; then restart your pc then download spotify again it works like a charm, Thanks Spotify/Symantec for sorting this problem out quickly but it was a royal pain in the arse as i use spotify alot my days should fly by once again ;)
