Today we are delighted to announce the launch of libspotify, our first step in opening up Spotify as a music platform. By releasing libspotify we will allow third-party developers to write applications for our service and offer the possibility of creating an exciting new range of features. Libspotify and any applications built with it will be available to Spotify Premium users as of today.
With the release of libspotify we hope to empower our users to build upon what we’ve started and come up with imaginative and innovative new ways of interacting with Spotify. There are hundreds of features that users have suggested to add to Spotify and by taking this step we hope to encourage the developer community to expand our service.
Developers interested in using libspotify can head on over to our developer site for more details. Initially we are offering support for Linux on IA-32, but we have plans to open up Spotify to more platforms and provide additional access to our services in the near future.

Finally! I know what I'll be doing all easter :-)
Great news!
Hurray!
Amazing news. Although it's bound to be misused somewhere along the line, this is certainly a huge step forward for Spotify and the music industry in general. Well done for making it possible.
Yeah! ...I can't wait for XBMC Media Center and Boxee plugin support for this!
oh boy !!! that's freaking awesome :D
Finally, now we just might see spotify move to the web.
awesome...only missing the iphone app...eagerly,anxiously waiting :)
Inte illa spotify! Kanon!
That is awesome!
Cool! Who's gonna make the car computer, with Spotify and mobile broadband, that I'll never find time to do? (See http://www.divideandconquer.se/2009/04/07/libspotify-the-official-spotify-library/)
Kanoners! :D
Will the applications build with Libspotify be available to Spotify PREMIUM users only? What about all the Spotify FREE users???
The spotify FREE users just got another incentive to buy premium, it seems. I hope that this eventually will lead to the service being accessible on sonos, squeezebox and apple TV too :) In the mean time, time to download the libraries and see what I can do with it in my VM :)
Ugh, your crappy login code just ate my comment. I'm obviously logged in since I'm typing in this box, why did spotify.com suddenly think I logged out before pressing "submit"? Anyways... I was really happy when you didn't shut down despotify on first sight, and I could barely believe my eyes when I saw you had opened up access publicly for anyone! Pretty API to boot :) But why's it binary-only? The protocol's already open with despotify; plus, security by obscurity never works. You're never going to predict all the platforms your fans will want to write Spotify apps for. PSP homebrew? Wii? OpenWRT? C'mon, open it up! :)
> But why’s it binary-only? I assume spotify is allowed to store data locally on client machines because it is encrypted. Giving away the decryption code would would probably violate a number of deals (i.e. nothing to stream anymore). Great news anyway.
This is the part of the license I like the least. There are sooo many interesting Spotify-related web services that cannot be made because of it. (I expect that "the web" includes REST services.) "Without limiting the foregoing, you may not: ... * (viii) attempt to embed or integrate the API into any website or otherwise allow access to the Service via the web rather than via the Application."
Does this open for a iPhone version? *hope*
Great start, but you really should consider releasing the source code as well to really unleash the full power of the open source community. Or are you going to compile the library for all platforms in existence? I cant see any real reason not to open it up. I dont think you have a choice in the long run. People will always find a way to hack it anyway as proven by despotify. I would guess its due to licensing issues, but then the license deals have to be reworked to allow a truly free client to be developed. I think despotifys arguments hold. See www.despotify.se for the whole reasoning.
Will this give people the possibility to create some plugin for the G15 keyboard?
Premium? $&!%!
That is so great. I will take a closer look at the lib and then maybe do something funny stuffs. :-) Thanks alot!
Nice, and premium users should be first of course!
really hope that they´re the first and not the only.
Integrate spotify api with Vuse app would make this one killer app. p2p video & music http://www.vuze.com/app
Disagree completely on the Vuze thing. That's the enemy today. I'm getting an error with both Safari 3.2.1 and FF 3.0.7 on licenses.xhtml. Actually Safari handles it better - FF just flips out. 'This page contains the following errors: error on line 502 at column 824: Opening and ending tag mismatch: p line 0 and div Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.' What I can see is it's only this. 'SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES; LOSS' Which at least needs a closing 'p' tag. But that's hardly a way to end a sentence anyway. I suspect something happened to the cat on the conveyor belt? Cheers.
"Does this open for a iPhone version? *hope*" The terms of usage explicitly excludes any device meant for handheld use - so no luck there. I hope it will arrive soon, I'm looking at buying an iphone in June (when the new ones are believed to arrive).
This is a great idea but it's sad that it's so restrictive, both by being closed source and by the license terms. I guess this pretty much prevents libspotify being used for any FOSS applications. :(
This is great! Even despite it being closed-source, but I can imagine that, if not Spotify wanting to maintain control, at least the music companies wanting to know for sure what platforms their music will be available for. I suppose one need to apply a touch of "business perspective" to that discussion. Anyway, much better than nothing, and as a Premium user AND a programmer, I get this itch in my fingers to experiment now. ;)
Record of the Day, who I work for, are offering a prize for the best app idea. The inaugural RotD Innovators Award and £500 will be yours if you win. http://rotdmongrel.blogspot.com/2009/04/record-of-day-innovators-award.html
Sweeet, Come on and build me a Plex plugin :)
AWESOME! This is GREAT news for Linux people!!! Now I for sure will sign full year memberchip! :-D
******* Squeezebox Plugin please ********* Spotify + Squeezebox would a killer combo.
Well, this is a bittersweet feeling. while I would gladly upgrade to premium for the chance of getting some more community-oriented features, I doubt that many of my friends will, which defeats the purpose of community features, which in turn makes it pointless for me to upgrade. In other words, I'll just have to wait until this is released to the free subscribers as well, or until such features is included in the main client. Not because I'm cheap, but because such features will not become useful for paying customers until they are available to everyone.
I can make a Linux client, but I'll not. Premium account ? Why Spotify ?
Why premium??, because the record companies and the artists wants to earn a bit. Everything can't be free, and spotify is already a great step into the future, and at the low cost: 99 SEK a month, it is a great deal for what you get. Not only for you, but also for the record companies and the artists. It is a win-win situation, and something that has been needed a long time ago since records are too expensive. Be happy :)
Re: prep "Everything can’t be free". You know that spotyify free is not "free"? I pay by listening to commercials, who pay spotify in turn. The companies then add the marketing costs to their products... so when/if I buy products from the commercial, I end up paying spotify! To think that it's free just because you dont pay with money is foolish.
Did I read it wrong? I thought the page said that you needed a premium account to get a development key. The key is embedded in the application. My understanding is that one of the developers (at least) needs a premium account but end user didn't. If that's the case I wonder if keys revoke if the developer account lapses. Still with a license provision against web apps that renders the API useless for me at this time, I had some ideas for a slightly new style of playlist/album sharing site I wanted to work on. Hopefully this is just the first in a series of API launches and a web capable API follows soon.
You have been slashdotted: http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/04/13/0128214
Sickk
jackalheadgod: "[...] any applications built with it will be available to Spotify Premium users as of today." The applications you build can only be used by paying users.
Looks like I read it wrong. I didn't notice that part. It may also explain the restriction on web apps. They may not want people having to give their spotify account details to another (possibly less secure web site). How this differs to a third party app that could easily have a password reporter hidden in it I don't know. Basically they've given us the ability to write our own GUI for spotify. They've not done anything to allow for innovative web services wrapped around the existing infrastructure. Still; this is a nice first start, I just hope they keep opening up new areas.
dont wanna be developer or anything... but i Have a VERY GOOD suggestion..... a feature that makes u able to set a time for music/radio to start!!! like a radio alarmclock online streaming!!!<3<3<3<3<3 IDEA by Tvedolini!!!;)
Should build a spotify plugin for PS3?
why PREMIUM it is pointless, I want that appkey!!
Ipod/iphone app would be perfect.. I'd expect it to be one of the first things we see..
Bra :D
sy1: You're simply playing for the music. Premium users pay for the music + the extra stuff. I agree with this being premium-only as it gives people more of a reason to actually buy premium so your money is being better spent.
'You’re simply "paying"* for the music' Typo, my bad. ;-;
Squeezebox support the way Pandora has! Common geeky guys you know you want to. It would be the coolest jukebox ever! Squeezebox + Spotify - both have interfaces that can be customized. Flipping songs on Spotify with the Squeezebox remote control without the dummy computer on would be fabulous!
