Spotify genres, the full listing

We’ve previously covered some of the advanced searches that you can do in Spotify to quickly find your favorite music. Searching by genre, such as “genre:soul“, is very popular but a lot of people are unaware of what genres they can search for.

To help you get more out of your searches we’ve put together a list of all the genres in Spotify. Some of the genres contain two words in which case you need to add quotation marks to the search for it to work properly. For example to find Appalachian Folk music you need to search for “genre:”Appalachian Folk”“.

Have a look at this Google Doc to see all 944 genres listed. Not all of them may be available since we may not have all genres of music yet but you should be able to find the majority of them.

Wonderful! Is there a comprehensive Google Doc with all the albums available so far?

Yay! Thanks for this, been hopping for it for a while. <gratuitous plug> I'll have to get this included in the next version of the Super Search (http://apps.theilluminatedengineer.com/sss/) </gratuitous plug>

Alot of nice genre's but i still miss alot of trance genre, and when searching Genre:Trance, thats not the kinda trance i am looking for

Are artists, albums and/or tracks limited to only one genre pick each, or can there be several? Picking one single genre definition is really, really difficult and often not really descriptive when it goes to really specific and special genres, and with some artists and albums can even be contradictory. It may be hard to come up with the genre name you're really looking for, while combined broader tag-like definitions might be better for finding something.

Excellent... How about adding some iTunes-style browsing silos? Would be fantastic browsing a heavy playlist by genre / artist / album... Bring it!

sph - Artists/Albums can and do have multiple genres associated with them.

it would be awesome to be able to list the categories an album is tagged as if you wish to find other albums of the same genre but arent certain what genre that might be :)

also, a possibility to view more than 100 hits, through paging or such.. or to be able to specify whether you want the search result to be specified on track, album or artist level. Ie "give me 100 songs of the genre 'synth pop'" would give a quite different result than "give me 100 artists of the genre 'synth pop'" whereas the second would probably be the one i would use the most for genre-searching

Thank you. Been waiting for this for ages.

Please add music of Andres Calamaro, he's all about "free music" and stuff! You can check on his site he even give away free music!!

Sajh! Don´t know what you mean. When I search for ex: Iron Maiden I get 310 hits, so you can view more than 100 hits.

Nice. But what I _really_ would love is a search by label. Is that possible also?

why not just add an autocompleting combo box or similar to the ui...? or expand the Radio section with a scrolling board of genres, instead of the small small set you have now?

Jepp, label search would be great. Especially since the googleDocs contain the labels.

jackalheadgod has added an auto-completing genre search picklist to Spotify Super Search - example video at: http://www.pansentient.com/2009/03/spotify-super-search-new-genre.html The search tool itself is at: http://sss.pansentient.com/

ah, the list expands once i scroll to the bottom :) didnt notice that before, nvm then

How do I get a full listing of all artists within a genre? For example, when I search for genre:"Power Metal", the search result shows that there are 107 artists within this genre. 32 of them are listed, followed by the text "and 75 more". How do I see those "75 more"?

spix - To see the rest you need to scroll down the list of results and they will appear.

"Prog-Rock/Art Rock" as of genre is insane, nobody searches for it, ever. I tried to search "art rock" = nothing, "prog-rock" = nothing, "progressive rock" = nothing. A proper, user understantable seachterm would be "Progressive Rock" or "Art rock". Thanks.

I agree with reaby! I can't see why Death Metal/Black Metal aren't separated either! :(

ihsahk - We get these genres from All Music Guide, they also provide the biographies and reviews for albums. We don't actively tag artists with these genres.

None of the metal genres work on the searches. Why?

Wow! That was not useful at all! I tried to find some Black Metal and used Death Metal/Black Metal. Got Hammerfall, Soilwork etc. The closest to any Black Metal at all was Dimmu Borgir. Not really what I would call Black Metal... Why not make a real Black Metal genre with real Black Metal?

Thanks for the answer Andres, but i have scrolled the complete list. The result list when searching for genre:"Power Metal" contain 400 songs (including duplicates, is 400 max?) from about 30 different artists, while the summary at the top says 1418 songs and 107 artists. It seems as Im still not able to see all 107 artists from that genre when searching, or am I doing something wrong?

thanks for the reply andres. It's a pity All Music Guide is so bad with genres, there's apparently a lot to improve even if this was a step forward...

I tried to search after some of the genre's and I am kinda dissapointed. Genres such as Enka, Kabuki, korean-pop/rock and chinese rock gives NO RESULTS at all. And genres like chinese pop, japanese rock/pop gives a few results but I know that I have bumped into a lot more artist with that genre. This was a great update but at the same time a big dissapointment, since the genre-search function seems to not be the best...

Ohh thanks for this! I saw the genre "Adult Alternative" but it wasn't what I thought it was hehe ;)

Not a single genre I have tried work.

Nice! Give me a label search too! ex label:verve music group That would be really nice!

tomb - You have to make sure you search with the term genre beforehand followed by a colon then the genre name. For example - genre:rock

<b>Will it be possible to search for Label?</b>

I've quit trying to categorize my collection, since it usually takes longer to remember which cagegory to search.

Please add Schlager - see wicki: Germany and Austria During the mid-to-late 1990s and into the early 2000s, however, German-language schlager saw an extensive revival in Germany. Even reputable dance clubs would put in a stretch of schlager titles during the course of an evening, and numerous new bands specialising in covering original '70s schlager tunes as well as performing "new" '70s-ish material were formed. In Hamburg, schlager fans still (as of 2006) gather annually by the tens of thousands and dress up in freakish '70s wear for a street parade called Schlager Move.

Sorry should have added that Schlager is not just German: Schlager (German Schlager, literally "hitter" or, more loosely translated, "a hit") is a style of popular music that is prevalent in Central and Northern Europe, in particular Sweden, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, but also to a lesser extent in Baltic States, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

No chill or chillout listed? Tried both "genre:chill" and "genre:chillout".... Peque?

and once you've found the genre you like, after 5 different new radio stations it disappears off my favourites, and the whole search starts again.... or am i missing something????

FOLK METAL. Where is it, damn.

By taking a look at allmusicguide.com, I suddenly understand why the genre search is virtually worthless if you're searching for something more specific than soul or pop/rock, and why the search "genre:Hard Rock" reveals nothing. Audioslave is listed as pop/rock, Lacuna Coil is listed as pop/rock, as well as Within Temptation and After Forever. It's the style listing at allmusicguide that's interesting where it specifies what kind of pop/rock it is. In Audioslave's case: Alternative Metal, Post-Grunge, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock. In Within Temptation's case: Goth Metal (hardly accurate, but nevertheless better than pop/rock). So, will it be possible in the near future to search by styles as well as genres? Please? :)

HELP! I've only just got my account and now i have forgotten how to get on my playlist.....OH LORD HELP ME!

Imposible search by genre, only a few artist are displayed...

whoever made that fukin genrelist (maybe taken from id3tag-standard) is affilate to get beaten up his face. why is there only one genre for stuff like "Back/Deathmetal" or "Jungle/Drum n Bass" while there are completly own genres for maybe "L.A.Punk" there is really no real structur behind it i think and what about a function to list all genres in spotify and search-linking them maybe like genre:all or just genrelist. Is this to hard for u guys - are u swapt from microsoft ? Another spotify-critic-point would be the Albumdate-story but this don't belongs in here However i love spotify - still can't belive that you can stand only due to commercials and monthly 10$ fees. big ups

where's dubstep?

I'm quite sure that any two(or more) words genre don't work in search engine. For example I've just tried to find some Industrial Dance so I typed "genre:Industrial Dance". As a result I saw 7 songs and all of them had word "Dance" in the track name. Besides all the genres that have 0 songs should be removed from that list. 944 might be an impressive number but it makes hard to find anything.

There is not a DnB (Drum and Bass) genre on spotify at the moment, would you be able to add one for all of the DnB lovers out there please

In www.listenspotify.com you can perform searches within spotify, share your playlists and stream music from other users

Would be cool to add auto complete functionality for tag searches.

None of this works on my Mac version. Can't do genre searches. Any update to fix in the pipeline?

How come genre:Hip-Hop get no hits when I search?
