Along with our Glasvegas pre-release and the wide release of U2’s latest album we have another update to the music catalogue. Over 3100 new albums and singles were added today and some of the more interesting releases come from Domino Records which delivered a large portion of their catalogue that was still missing. Domino has some great artists signed such as Arctic Monkeys, The Kills and Franz Ferdinand so we’re quite pleased to get these releases.
For a full listing of today’s additions have a look at our Google Doc. As always, not all of releases are available in each region.
Along with these additions we’ve made a change to our catalogue that we wanted to let you know about. In a number of cases we received exact duplicates of albums and singles from the labels which caused some confusion. Today’s update merges all those duplicates so there will only be one copy of each album. However if there are different versions of the same album, for example releases with additional tracks or uncensored lyrics, than we will still list all the versions and you can view them by clicking the drop down icon to the right of the album name.

Nice to see Arctic Monkeys on Spotify!
Wohoo, 69 love songs by Magnetic fields!
Thanks. Great update! It will be fun to pick out the goodies from this one. Check it out at http://spotinews.wordpress.com/
PAVEMENT! Yessssssss!
Happy about Pavement, Madness, Magnetic Fields etc not so happy that I've lost a few songs which i'm certain is down to this duplicate buisness
girl_from_oz: What Madness albums do you have? There is still only one compilation album available in Sweden and there was no Madness listed in the Google Doc file. Finally one of my red tracks came back but this is not in the Google Doc list either. I'm beginning to suspect that some tracks have been removed by mistake and are slowly coming back, but since they are not new they are not showing up in the Goole Doc lists.
I lost 10 tracks today digithed but got one back that vanished last week. Madness album is utter madness and it wasn't in the update
Great! But you still haven't fixed so artist/bands with the same name show up in their own page. An example is the swedish band "Kent" and some french band/artist which show up at the same page: spotify:artist:6BeMrApStwTLvMHa91BMzf
Another problem with the duplicate thing is this album http://open.spotify.com/album/0m9O8keSYQ3lR5WwuYXKOo all the tracks on it seem like previews the full length version must have been deleted
When can we be sure that you won´t remove more songs? This is very worrying to me since i´m not sure if I can stand losing more songs. I haven´t lost any big since the big cleaning of songs, but you never know.
Great update! I see that some of the albums here are listed as "...not available in your country" while others are listed as "...not available yet". What does "not available yet" mean? Will they be available soon, or something?
Woho, Arctic Monkeys, finally :D Thanks for this.
Love that you have finally added more Franz Ferdinand! One problem though the track titles are not right. If I play for example "Auf Achse" the song playing is "This Fire" and the same with many other songs.
Junior Boys!!!!!
There is a big problem with Franz Ferdinands 'Franz Ferdinand'. I'm now listening to, according to Spotify, 40 ft, but I'm pretty sure this is Take Me Out.. But the song's seems to fit the real tracklist, but only is named wrong..
Cencored? spotify:track:7AqDSHqYusp7DtnCWoOb9v This is not good. Destruction of music.
Why has a bunch of albums been removed from this release list since I first browsed it through? There definitely was something like the whole Tangerine Dream discography from the 1990s in the list three hours go, and now there's none left. What's going on? Also, earlier today I was listening to some legendary Leevi and the leavings from the 1980s, and noticed how well they were represented and thought about listening to some more later this week. However, this evening I noticed that all their albums except one had disappeared, and the one I listened to earlier (still found in my playlists) said that not available in Finland. That's probably the same as not available at all, because I can't think of a reason why classic Finnish rock would be made available anywhere else and not in Finland.
James Yorkston, Lou Barlow, Jay-Jay Johanson, Olle Ljungström, Loney Dear, J. Tillman, Pavement, Pram, Preston School of Industry, Sebadoh (but where is the Harmacy album?), Smudge, Stephen Malkmus, Teenage Fanclub, Magnetic Fields, Triffids and U.N.P.O.C. Well, I am overwhelmed!!! :D
Finnish band Mokoma has album "Tämän maailman ruhtinaan hovi" which is somehow messed up. The tracklist is correct (i.e. the song titles are in correct order) but actually the songs are not in correctly ordered (they might be reversed, I don't have time to check).
With so many new tracks in Spotify, here's something that might help - a new advanced search tool called “Spotify Super Search” at: http://sss.pansentient.com/ This helps you create advanced search queries, including: Select whether to search on Artist, Album, Track, or any field; Specify whether the result matches, contains, or does not contain your query; Chain queries together using boolean AND and OR picklists; Seach based on year: exact match, before a certain year, after a certain year, or released within a range; Search based on genre. There are over 200 genres used in Spotify: Spotify Super Search lets you select and search on any identified genre.
It would appear that the merging of duplicates is not complete since I still have lots of public playlists with red tracks that are actually available in my region if I use search but are not playable from the playlist which just gives the message "This track is currently not available in Sweden".
All I wanna know is if the tracks I lost today were because of an error in the duplicate thing and weren't meant to be removed
sph - The Tangerine Dream music was loaded into Spotify but it's not available until later in the year and not playable for anyone. Normally I don't publish albums like that in the list but I made a mistake when loading this list which is why they were originally included.
Are the changes on artist visibility incidental or are these just fine-tuned when doing updates? I'm fan on Kotiteollisuus and seems that you added new album but removed the band visibility to Finland. Can I get a rollback please? :)
You have promised not to remove any tracks again: "From this point on there are no plans to remove any more music and our catalogue will only grow from here." But you did it again and we lost many 1000 of tracks here in Germany! When will this stop finally???
akrde - The drop in track number is due to the consolidation in duplicate albums, not removal of music. But having said that there will always be a small change in catalogue as rights change hand, artists switch labels, labels go out of business, etc. The number of those should be relatively small but it still happens.
andres; it seems that Spotify lost a great amount of Finnish music yesterday. Especially almost everything from label called Johanna (or Love Records) is gone. No more Kotiteollisuus, Juice Leskinen, Absoluuttinen Nollapiste, Hector etc. Do you know whether they might return to the Finnish Spotify catalogue? Or are the licencing deals to blame again? I'd appreciate an answer, since label Johanna carries many of my favourite artists, and without them my Spotify experience got just significantly worse. :(
vesapai - I see if I can find out what happened. Does seem odd to restrict Finnish music from Finland.
Never heard of those bands, and sadly I never will it seems. However, even some main stream bands are not currently available. I was quite shocked not to see a single track from AC/DC, however it can’t be the fault of Atlantic Records as Bjork, Chic etc are represented. Presumably it’s to do with the publishers. I think Sony Music Entertainment Australia is responsible, but then Sony publish Jacko’s music and he’s represented. What’s the criteria here?
The "criteria", as you called it, is that the availability of everything is completely at the whim of each record label. There is no hard and fast rules and the system is so complicated that it would take Andres a week to explain it to you and even then you wouldn't understand it, or even if you did you would suddenly realise that it's completely crazy and doesn't make any sense. That's about the best explanation I think anyone can give in a form that you will actually understand.
professor - AC/DC controls their own rights and they've opted not to be included in Spotify.
AC/DC are as bad as The Beatles their music is impossible to get digitally legal wise
Question: When you have Universal as a label, does that include Polystar (www.polystar.de)
Since this update, the only Millencolin album has disappeared from Spotify. I played it not to two days ago, but now it's gone. Also, when I first started using Spotify the second Volbeat album (Rock the Rebel, Metal the Devil) was represented, but now only their first remain. This seems odd, as all their three albums were seemingly released by the same label (Mascot Records). Any idea why this is happening? It seems with every new release more and more of my favourite music is disappearing... :/ I sure hope this is a temporary thing. Also, any chance you could list in your google docs what regions each release is available in?
Still, no Neko Case :(
Half my Finnish pop/rock went caboom overnight. I thought music wouldn't be removed anymore?
shinan - Can you give me a few examples of Finnish music that you lost? No music was removed but it seems that a number of albums were restricted in Finland and we're looking into it.
andres; fyi I am in Norway, not Finland. With regards to MY complaints of music disappearing. :) Not that that was what you were looking into exactly. But it would be sweet if this was all just some technical mishap and stuff reappeared. Spotify is an awesome service, just sad to see stuff disappear, though I understand it is not the fault of Spotify if restrictions are imposed by labels.
Nearly all Leevi & the Leavings, All Kotiteollisuus, some Hurriganes and some Juice Leskinen are the ones I noticed from my playlists.
Woooop woop wooop. I gotta do the funky chicken dance to that news! And really looking forward to whenever bands can put their own music up there too! Atul from The Box http://www.donkeybox.co.uk
Kotiteollisuus, Leevi & the Leavings, Wigwam, Ultra Bra, Absoluuttinen Nollapiste, Juice Leskinen, Freud Marx Engels & Jung, Maj Karma, Kari Peitsamo, Pelle Miljoona, Veltto Virtanen, Pekka Pohjola, Pekka Streng, Hector... All are Finnish artists that disappeared completely or mostly a day or two ago. The thing in common between them is, as I mentioned earlier, is their Finnish company Johanna Kustannus; all artists I noticed missing are from Johanna's sub-labels Megamania, Pyramid or Love Records/Kustannus... Please please please... :)
And concerning Johanna: "Johanna Kustannus is one of the biggest independent record companies in Finland uniquely concentrating on producing domestic music. On two labels (Megamania/Pyramid) Johanna releases approximately twenty new albums a year. Most of the production represents new Finnish pop / rock music and is locally distributed by Universal Music Finland."
Thanks, we're looking into this. The music wasn't removed just restricted in Finland and we're trying to find out why.
Spotify doesn't seem to be scrobbling to my last.fm anymore. Any clues to why andres?
believer - It's a known bug for with the Mac version, we're working on a fix. There's a forum thread dedicated to this.
Also missing is the album "Kaksoisolento" from Don Huonot. This album was released by Pyramid, which is a sublabel of Johanna. Thanks for a great service! I hope you would create a nice interface to the spotify database to see which albums are available, where, if not why, etc. I don't mean to undermine your great effort, but it seems funny to list new music only in a google doc and report these problems here as blog comments.. Surely there's a better way.
You people forget one important thing about spotify... IT'S BETA! What does that mean? It means that things may change that will ruin all your playlists. At some point the devs may decide to change the format of the entire database for some (to us) unknown reason, and everything we've done is wiped in an instance... It's what BETA is all about... We're *testing* this product. They only said they won't remove tracks already in the database, there's nothing that says the database won't be altered. My opinion is: While still hugely limited in functionality, it's growing into an AWESOME service. ANY update to the database is welcome, regardless of the impact it has on my playlists. I'm confident that it's a change for the better, and if it's not it'll likely be rolled back soon enough.
Archie Bronson Outfit, Belle and Sebastian, Clinic, Come, Elliott Smith, Flying Saucer Attack, Hood, Josef K, Lou Barlow, Neutral Milk Hotel, Orange Juice, Pavement, Pram, Sebadoh, Stephen Malkmus, Teenage Fanclub, Television Personalities, The Folk Implosion, The Magnetic Fields, The Pastels, The Triffids, Von Sudenfed, Young Marble Giants... AWESOME!!!
Brilliant site "Spotify" - best thing since dark chocolate!! Well done Guys...Keep up the good work
andres - thank you for the quick reply! looking forward to it ;)
