Great news for new Spotify Open users

It’s all good news at the moment. First, we become better friends with Facebook. Now we’re removing time limits for all new users. It seems only right to give you more time to discover more music!

So, from today, there’ll be no more Spotify Open. Everybody who listens to Spotify for free will simply have a Spotify account.

All Spotify accounts come with a 6-month time-limit honeymoon! During this time, there’s no limit to the amount of ad-supported music you can enjoy. After 6 months, you’ll be limited to 10 hours of streaming a month and a 5-play limit for any individual track. Unless, of course, you’ve subscribed by then!

How does this affect existing Spotify Open users?

If you’ve had your Spotify Open account for less than six months, you’ll discover that your time cap has gone. And it’ll stay gone until your account reaches its six-month birthday. Enjoy the extra music.

If you’ve had your Spotify Open account for more than six months, you’ll still be limited by time. As you’ve been with us for a while, the chances are you also enjoyed a six-month period without time limits when you first joined.

What about paid accounts?

There’ll be no change to our paying subscribers – Spotify Unlimited and Spotify Premium will carry on giving joy as normal.

Happy listening!

Just having this is great. Thank you for joining with Facebook to enhance the experience. Great job guys!!!

Thank you Spotify. You have great website here. And thanks for High Quality music in Premium. You have 99,9% of music in Premium 320 kbit right now! Big thanks for this.

Thank you so much spotify!.. It's so great to hear you are rewarding new customers while totally ignoring the existing users that have supporting you... Any chance of getting the gapless playback bug sorted that's been open for over a year http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/gapless_opera_please ?

I literally started paying 6 hours ago. Can I go back to open for the next five months and then start paying again? I don't mind ads, but I got time capped last night.

Sorry, but that's a bit ridiculous. No more Spotify Open? Yeah there is, you've just added a 6 month delay on it before the limitations kick in. Which is fine for new users, but what about people that have been with you since day one?

So you're halving our free time, but covering it with the frosting of unlimited for 6 months? I don't like what you've done here. I was thinking about subscribing before, but now I won't be.

What's stopping someone from just starting a new spotify account every six months?

The old 5 limit listening restriction is still active... I cannot listen to many of the songs in my playlists.

I'm not bothered about the time limits, it's the number of plays that bothers me. So once I've listened to one song 5 time, I can never again listen to it on Spotify. I can understand that it is not feasible to make it totally free and unlimited, but the play limit just doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps 5 times a month would be better?

Congratulations, but I continue thinking that it's a wrong thing to limitate songs and the listening time of them, so youtube, goear and more sites are more comfortable as I could never imagine, just because they do not have limited time or limited reproductions in any songs they contain. Be sure that the other companies are thankful to you, I do not.

I have the free (swedish) version, cause I don't have a credit card, so I can't pay.. However, I just discovered that I can only listen to a song for like 10 times, then I have to buy it, or upgrade my account.... Is this the new deal? Will this remain?

Grooveshark is free, no limits, no audio ads and more music.

What you didn't tell is that new users only can subscribe to Spotify if they have an facebook account. This sounds ridicules. I have understood that already members of spotify don't need a facebook account. If so, i have to cancel my spotify account (payed) because i don't want a facebook account. And i want to make my own decision of being member of a site on the internet. As you know facebook is a killing site of privacy. Is spotify on it's way to the same? I hope not. The spying cookies of spotify on members is almost a bridge to far. Don't be so stupid to take it further on worse privacy!!!

The tight integration with facebook efter the latest so called facebookupdates will unfortunatly not be a good thing for spotify. Already there is so many people that is really pissed off at facebook and are already looking elseware for their social network. If you then is forced to have a facebook account to use spotify, well you do the math.... So sorry this i think is one of the biggest misstakes spotify done so far.

Get all the brand new albums we select on Spotify almost in real time and subscribe to our playlists. Check out or website or follow us and like us on Facebook. http://www.soundofus.com/ http://www.facebook.com/soundofus http://twitter.com/soundofus

Thank You Spotify!

Of course, I like this and appreciate it. I am reviewing a SONOS Play:3 sound system. Will you open the connection to SONOS during the first six months too?

Do I really need to say that Spotify has now become increasingly poorer quality service? ...Or in my language: ¿Realmente hace falta que diga que Spotify se ha convertido actualmente cada vez más en un servicio de peor calidad?

Very nice of you. How about being even nicer now and removing track fading from the Spotify app? This is a major issue that is going ignored. Fade-ups on each track when using the app? Why? This ruins the impact of music. Premium subscribers shouldn't be paying to have their music compromised. If it's not compromised on the desktop, then why on the app? Makes no sense. You have to do better.

Why don't the moaners just get their wallets out. You won't get anything that's better value for this tiny amount of money per month. And, newsflash, Spotify needs to make money to survive.

Spotify, since you introduced limits I have not used your service again out of principle. This will not tempt me back. The old 'bait 'n' switch' tactic is not valid outside of drug dealers or bad poker players. I shall not do business with you ever, ever again (and I used to have a premium account!)

So much for my recruiting more listeners; I know several audiophiles that probably would have paid for this service (I'm a college student with no extra funds; it's free or pass -- sorry, spotify, but you never had my dollars, and now you won't be getting theirs. 10hrs? Seriously? Even Pandora has a better set up than that per month!

I still got a time cap and my account is three days old o.0

I just cancelled my paid subscription because of this enforced Facebook membership. I am acually very sad about it. At the same time I can't just sit here and watch while Facebook makes more and more parts of the internet dependent on it. Facebook is not the internet.

Google requires a gmail account to use Google productivity tools. Facebook is not the creator or owner of Spotify so why the requirement. Facebook is like non-alcoholic beer. I am ticked off at the necessary pairing.

Thank you very much, my account is 4 months into Spotify and I was enjoying 20hrs/month, as Spotify was a great music service. Now that this has occured, I now have 2 months unlimited service, with adverts, which I dont mind listening to, so thankyou for merging Open into Free. I shall now use as much of Spotify as I can, for the next 2 months anyway. After that, well I really dont know what will happen then. Thank You Spotify!!!! :)

Great news!!!!

However, Facebook is definitely dominating tthe Web....

Which I do not have. And I never will get a F'book account.

I will not join Facebook. I will not do anything that helps a company that claims the rights to anything a user posts. Unfortunately, that means the end of Spotify for me.

This requirement to have Facebook is complete garbage. I'm considering canceling my premium subscription if that is the future of this service.

Shame on you Spotify! I'm a long time paying user and I will IMMEDIATELY cancel my subscription if you DARE to impose the Facebook subscription! Deezer will be happy to count me in.

Okay, long time Paid Spotify user very disappointed with the Facebook connection. Going to have to think twice about my subscription now.

Forcing people to use Facebook was the final nail in the coffin for me, no more inviting people to spotify. Instead I'll advertise about the competition which haven't sold out to a crappy company like Mark Zuckerberg(TM).

Hi, I've recently started paying for my spotify account after you introduced restrictions to the amount of times I could play a track. It really galls though to hear that you're getting into bed with Facebook. For many years I have avoided signing up to that site and I'm afraid that if you eventually make it compulsory for all users to have Facebook accounts, then I will cease my subscription to your service. There's nothing wrong with connecting with Facebook but perhaps you ought to consider making it optional rather than mandatory for new users. Starla

So disappointed that you decided to throw your lot in with FACEBOOK. Is there anyway that those that value their internet freedom and privacy can upgrade and stay FACEBOOK free?

Spotify+Facebook=Back to crap 192kb Rhapsody

Geeh, it's only good that people complain about this even tho Spotify is a good service, I for one won't continue to be a premium paid user if they continue in this direction.

Total crap. This morning my Spotify simply hangs on the "Welcome screen", with some weird "Spotify loves Facial"-banner, that I apparently can't close. It's just there. And I cannot do anything. Or well, I can try to click the Options etc, but most of the menus are disabled (gray instead of black). Good job guys, keeping your customers happy with the new "no moar privacy + more annoying features"-updates. Oh, extrapoints for keeping for old, loyal customers happy!

I will certainly close my premium account. I want to pay for this kind of service, but with money. I don't want to pay with my private life. My private life is to expensive for you ! As soon as i've chosen another service like spotify, I leave... with no regrets at all...

Premium account here. Watching you closely Spotify. Not happy at all with this bullshitmove.

It's great that you've joined Facebook, now it becomes easy to share music with my friends. Too bad I still don't have the possibility to subscribe to Spotify Unlimited because I don't have a creditcard. I've read a few months ago there will be more paying methods (in the Netherlands) but still nothing :( I really can use some good music at work, so please upgrade the payment methods so more people can use your service.

No |Changes? You are kidding right? I've been a client for years. Had my Spotify tied to my Facebook for years... so why pester me now with each time I log in if I please want to use frictionless sharing. I don't! Not now, not ever. Stop bugging me. I'm paying € 10 per month. That's a whole lot more than those americano's - it gives me my right to privacy. Go on like this & I'll be looking for a new system

Why is Spotify trying to hide the fact that you now need a Facebook account to join? I thought Spotify was all about freedom of choice. I have recommended Spotify to so many of my friends and now I stand in shame. I am seriously considering leaving Spotify out of principle, even though I am already on FB. This is the worst move ever! Shape up!
