A few weeks back we released the next generation of Spotify and today we’re excited to offer you even more ways to get the most out of Spotify with the introduction of Spotify Open and Spotify Unlimited.
![]()
First up is Spotify Unlimited, which offers you round-the-clock, ad-free access to Spotify on your computer. Create playlists, build your own library, share music with friends - and all for only €5 a month.
![]()
Also available from today is Spotify Open. Open offers new Spotify users the chance to try out the service without the need for an invite, giving access to millions of tracks for up to 20 hours every month - that’s equivalent to listening to 25 albums or 300 tracks EVERY month!
So if you’ve got friends who haven’t managed to get an invite but have been dying to get on Spotify, let them know about Spotify Open.
We’re really excited to offer more choices for users and existing users who are happy with their current plan won’t be affected by these updates.

Nice move, guys. Are you gonna eventually phase out spotify free then?
Great news guys but why would you call it Spotify Unlimited when it has limitations? :)
Great! I am personally gonna stay with Premium, actually just for offline mode and better sound quality (no mobile phone so far:]) but Spotify Unlimited is exactly something that a lot of people were bi**hing about that it didn't exist. It's very good move !
@martin.lundberg Think it's in relation to the music being unlimited?
Bye bye Spotify, I'm off to somewhere free AND unlimited. Sorry.
alexlebrit - as we say in the post: We’re really excited to offer more choices for users and existing users who are happy with their current plan won’t be affected by these updates.
@andres I thought the same till i dug deeper and found your still offering "Free" maybe you should update the post to make it a little more clear?
Hi, in the "Compare products" picture, why no comparison of the sound quality? Does Spotify Unlimited offer 320k as Premium does? http://www.spotifyclassical.com/
Does this mean that Spotify Open will replace Free? Thats what it sounds like at least, and then its the end of Spotify the way I see it. Spotify is too expensive compared to last.fm where I can just start the radio and then effectively listen to my own music collection. In Spotify I instead need to pay a higher price for having to compile playlists of music I wanna listen to. The radio function in Spotify just plays way too much crap.
I just want to use spotify on my mobile, but 9.99 is just too expensive for me.
Can I change from premium to "open"? Can u get "open" on my iPhone?
This is exactly what I´ve been looking for! But you forgot to add the possibility of buying the Unlimited option in the "Subscription"-page of my profile.
Is there a way to change an existing premium account to unlimited without the hassle of cancelling?
@ulyssestone: Unlimited does not give high bitrate. We'll add that to the comparison chart, thanks. @pyhnix84: You can't use it with your iPhone, no. Spotify Mobile is only with Premium.
I agree you need to make it clearer between 'free' and 'open'. I was confused until I found the comparison chart. 4.99 a month for unlimited, you can't really complain. Waiting for new iphone till I get premium.
no more day pass, then?
That's a good change, I've using Premium since half a year ago, but recently I've been thinking about switching back to Free, because I'm not using the mobile app. But with the new Unlimited, I will keep on trucking without ads. And I think many Free friends will change to Unlimited. Congrats! @ziadoz: Yes, we can. The change looks to be automatic when the Premium expires and it will switch to Unlimited.
I agree with @martin.lundberg: Why call it Spotify Unlimited when it has limitations? I think it was more clear when you made the 'Spotify Unlimited' account unlimited and gave the Premium account the limititations…
I wanted to know if using an unlimited account we can use now other programs to hear spotify like Spokify. Is that possible?
Nice upgrade ! But i'm keeping my premium account :)
9.99 € a month too expensive? I have to disagree. I love Spotify and I wish there was a way I could pay more. For 25 €/month I'd subscribe to Spotify Posh which woul finally add playlist organization.
Aw, too bad the high bitrate option is still limited to Premium. Personally I'd offer that and adfree in the "Unlimited" tier and have the abroad/offline/mobile/exclusive features available only to Premium customers (also swap the names). But I guess there's no way to please everyone unless you go with a modular based system. Glad we're making progress, anyway, I bet this will please a lot of users!
Spotify "Unlimited" is a very bad naming. How can you think about that kind of name when the first issue of Spotify is having region restrictions aka "limitations"? Even if the labels are to blame here, this kind if naming is very confusing. Good for you guys for launching new services. How about giving full & REAL unlimited access to everything to your Premium "9-euros-per-month" users?
Hi, this sounds good but I've got a question. Currently I have a Free account and I may be interested in upgrading to Unlimited, but what happens if I want to downgrade sometime in the future? Will I fall back to Free or Open? Because an Open account just won't make it for me. Still, I think this is a move in the right direction, thanks!
Hi, I am an user with Spotify Free, with no 20-hour limit, and would like to try Premium for a month (Unlimited doesn't cut it for me, since I travel abroad a lot). If I try it and then I decide not to stick with it, will I be back to the plan that I have now, or to the 20-hour-limit plan? Because if it's the second I'm afraid I'd rather not try...
And here a premium user since the beginning still waiting for the Blackberry app :(
I got all excited when I saw this and then realised it was just a half way house solve nothing offering. Ditch the new pointless and confusing unlimited, make Premium €5 a month and get it over with.
@@pepf, @al-khwarizmi: If you have Free now, you'll fallback to Free when your Premium or Unlimited expires.
Nice. Thanks for the quick answer, I'll sure give that Premium a try next month.
It's a good move however I think you should keep existing early users of Spotify with Spotify Free as forcing them to have Spotify Open would be taking something away from customers.
A few sugesstions: - Unlimited with offline playlist (offline = less traffic in Spotify network) - Unlimited Mobile for the people who only use spotify in iPhone, iPad... a little cheap than Unlimited (3 euros for example). -
Would the day pass be still available?
you guys had a good thing going, this is simply too confusing. Are you slowly phasing out free? I'm a premium customer but it was only a one month subscription, and if you are phasing out Free (which is very much what it sounds like), then I'll take my custom elsewhere
You guys really need to explain this clearer because many people think you are taking Free away. Premium/Unlimited/Free/Open should be listed in the product list and Open should be added to the comparison list ASAP to avoid confusion...
Just to be clear guys... are you saying that people that got invited by a premium user o via request list (like me) don´t get affected by the 20h limit? Please be clear, just say yes or not...
1) Is there way to upgrade open to free if you get an invitation. 2) Wouldn't open be better if you would give 1 or 2 hours per day, rather than 20 per month. That way you would bind people to you more, as now people will simply empty their 20 hours at the beginning of the month, forget about spotify and probably use it never agian.
If Unlimited had offered HQ-bitrate I've might been paying for that, but now I'm keeping Free. Change that and you will have a customer.
I've been on premium for quite a while now, and have no use for the mobile stuff or even high-bitrate. Is there a way to easily switch from Premium to Unlimited (and vice-versa)?
Spotify really should be looking at a cheaper mobile-only option. I used to pay for a premium account to access music on my iPhone, but I simply can't justify £9.99 per month for this. I'm sure you have music industry execs shouting in your ear about 'not giving away music blah blah blah', but give users a mobile only option for £5 per month and I'm sure you'll begin to see mass market adoption. Mobile is the future, don't let someone else get there before you!
great news! Ill be signing up from free to unlimited! Very pleased with this latest move! Whats happeneds to party though?
In the spanish page does not show the latest changes in the product info. https://www.spotify.com/es/get-spotify/overview/
Tempting! I was waiting for either a Squeezebox version or a native Linux version, but this might tip the scales for me. Pro - I'm not interested in mobile music, so Open ticks that box. Con - No higher bitrate, which I AM interested in. Besides, the link buttons ('Buy' 'Buy Premium' etc) do not seem to work on the WINE version (Ubuntu 10.04). My £60 p/a is just burning a hole in my pocket until one of these tips up! SB, native Linux, higher bitrate. 'If you have Free now, you'll fallback to Free when your Premium or Unlimited expires' Thanks for that answer above - I will try Premium for a month, to see if the higher bitrate is a deal-breaker or not, meanwhile.
I'm with a few of the other posters above. This is really good, and clearly a way to bring more potential Premium subscribers in. I'm a Free user right now, and for the amount I use Spotify, I'm happy to stay one. I'd really like you guys to succeed long-term, but I can't justify spending £9.99 a month so I can use Spotify on my iPhone (that's really the only reason - I don't care about higher quality, or about ads - but please keep the party mode). I'd be happy to subscribe to Premium, if it was cheaper. Other than that, keep up the good work - you guys are awesome.
I abandoned Spotify due to their lack of involvement with users through the "Get Satisfaction" pages that "spotify staff are involved with". There were SO many people getting fed up & not one single response from Spotify staff on the thread I was monitoring. I moved to Napster, £5 / month unlimited + 5 free downloads.
=== popurls.com === popular today... yeah! this story has entered the popular today section on popurls.com...
A great move, many people will want this who find premium too expensive and only want desktop use. I signed up to premium for one month, just for the iphone app, but £10 is a bit too much for me at the moment. It would be good to strike some kind of middle ground. Mobile enabled with Spotify Unlimited, but with none of the other perks. Ads could still be played on the desktop version.
Now you only need to provide us with a Linux version of the software and then, maybe, I will think of paying. Anyway, I think it is a nice move to set 5€/month. That is reasonable.
The naming of these new plans is so confusing. Unlimited is actually limited, that makes no sense at all. Also the whole open vs free isn't clear. Why not call it Spotify Invite and Spotify Open... that way it's immediately obvious. This seems like a big mess to me. I agree with those that say turning off ads isn't worth a fiver a month, if the bitrate was increased then i'd pay... or if the number of ads goes up!
All we need now is a "Spotify Mobile Lite" option, a reduced-price package for Android users who don't have access to most of the good mobile features ;)
I usually buy premium some times per year (when I've to study for my final exams)... after that I'd go back to Spotify Free or to Spotify Open ?! If I don't go back to Spotify Free I think that Spotify isn't for me.
