Some serious but rare bugs waited until the new version was out to the general public before showing themselves - despite every effort from our quality assurance team to ensure this doesn’t happen. We’ve identified most of these bugs and we’re going to submit a fix to Apple shortly for approval so hopefully we can get it out to users as quickly as possible.
So what’s been fixed?
We are sorry to those who have been affected and hopefully we can roll this fix out fast. If you’re
And finally - we wish everyone a Happy Easter and holiday weekend.
UPDATE: We’ve submitted the app to Apple and as soon as it’s available for download we will let you know. In the meantime we are going to pull version 0.4 from the App store in order to ensure that no one else experiences problems.
UPDATE 2: The new app has been approved and we’re just waiting for it to appear in the App store now.

Good news, 0.4.0 is a bit buggy!
Great, that crashing after startup has been driving me nuts :) thank you guys!!
Well isn't that brilliant. Im off away tommorow and now wont be able to get it working until after im back. Wont be able to use it away on my hols like I had planned as no internet. Im afraid I will be cancelling my account and getting a refund, and judging by the reviews on the itunes store spotify will be loosing more customers than just myself. Fancy paying £10 a month for nothing.
Good to have an explanation. I work in software myself and understand how difficult it is to test every single permutation. Looking forward to a speedily delivered fix.
It's not just Spotify with problems, I've just downloaded iTunes 9.1 and now I cant get it to work at all!!!Right click and nothing.Seems apple is having similar problems then.
Is it not possible in any way to download the older version until the problem is sorted? This would let us to keep using the app while Apple decides to approve the fix ("as quickly as possible" perhaps is equal more than a week!!). Please, offer a temporary solution to first problem in similar way than the second.
0.4.1 has been submitted to Apple now. manuwyatt: I really wish there was, but the only way is if you upgraded on your phone, and happen to have the old version on your computer. Then you can just remove the new version from your phone and resync. If you have a backup of your computer, e g with Time Machine, you could probably fetch the old version of the app into iTunes again, and do the same trick.
New update wiped out all 1100 off line tracks I had to load them all again I am surprised that was not sorted or at least advise users of the problem apart from that I love the app however better plyaylists folders etc wood be good
Well this information would have been good to know before i updated. Now it´s refreshing for hours and hours without woorking. So an update is on its way at least thats a good thing. Hopefully it will be up for download within a week. But then again i was one of thousands waiting week after week for the original app on appstore so days could turn to weeks. No fun at all
I've listened to some offline tracks today with 0.4.0, but after going online these tracks were not scrobbled to Last.fm. Is this another known 0.4.0 issue or am i doing something wrong? (scrobbling is activated in the More section of course).
Won't connect and won't even let me play the tracks I already had synced, very frustrating. Understand that software QA is very tough but was generally disappointed with the number of crashes I had in 0.3 and now similarly disappointed with 0.4. Decided to try premium for a few months but sorry to say I'm not impressed by the quality/experience of the iPhone app so far. Any idea what the timescale is for the update to be accepted?
@adamaaaapeanuts - We’ve submitted now but can’t give a timescale at this point. As soon as we know we'll update.
How do you play you itunes music thru Spotify
Whilst it must be very frustrating for those affected by these bugs, on a more positive note, I would like to thank the Spotify team for bringing me a terrific service both via my computers and the iPhone app. I am listening now via my iPhone and home Hi-Fi, and can see the LastFM scrobbling on my computer screen. I love having the album information available to read on the iPhone together with hyperlinks to other albums and artists. Thanks Spotify and Happy Easter to everyone!
Frustrating, sure. Annoying, may be. But look, unless it bricks your iPhone or iPod there is nothing to yell about. Bugs are an unfortunate side of software in general - there is no way around them and they will happen to everybody. The point I would like to bring up however, is that I am very uncertain about the rhetoric of such infrequent updates. Scrobbling and several other features could have been implemented gradually with minor version increases. This would perhaps also spare the users such publish-then-pull-from-the-store incidents.
After installing 0.4.0 on my iPod Touch I lost all my offline content, I've read that I'm not the only one. Is this a bug. If not you could have warned me that this would happen so I would have delayed the upgrade for a more convenient time (ie not while I'm on a snowboarding trip). Secondly, I'm concerned that the app seems to be sending a list of my iPod tracks to Spotify? On the More page it says "nnn of nnnn tracks found at Spotify". What feature is this for? What are you doing with this information? I feel this is a serious breach of my privacy.
Why wasent it tested before it was released? That way we would still be using the old version perfectly fine. My opinion is that it shouldn't have been made available for download with such serious problems. Im sure these issues could have been identified before being uploaded to the appstore.
@k2col - I asked about the "nnn of nnnn tracks found at Spotify" message. It apparently just checks if any of your iPod tracks also exist in any of your playlists (it doesn't actually search Spotify to find the tracks). It does this so that it can save storage by using the iPod track instead of downloading the track from Spotify if you decide to make the playlist available offline.
Atleast you HAVE a Spotify app ='(
I've been trying to download ver0.4 for the past half hour on app store! Then came across this suspecting something was up. Good to see action been taken so soon, however this ain't gonna do anything to help Spotify, this simply should not have happened, there seem to be a lot disgruntled PREMIUM subscribers (myself included) out there as a result of this mess up, not good enogh Spotify! Hopefully Apple publish updated (bug free!) version soon.
Did they remove the spotify app from app store?
@ndition yes they did
I have all mentioned bugs. Try logging out of Spotify on your iPhone and then logging back in again. Has stopped the crash that occurs after starting to play a track for me. Hopefully this may provide some clue on rectification.

Hmm, rather unfortunate QA error then. I won't be renewing my subscription unless this is fixed in the next 24 hours.
How do i re-register
Would be nice to know are we talking about hours, days or weeks in this... Estimation would be nice, even if it doesn't hold... "We'll let you know", as a comment is more or less: "f*** u!" So please, when can we expect the app to be back in App store?
@saukki81 - Unfortunately we don't know, it depends on how fast the approval process is. The last approval only took a few days and we hope this one will be quick as well.
K, but at least we have a guess now :) I ordered the premium only because of the mobile feature ysterday. Is it possible to get a free contract extension from the time the application hasn't been working? (as said, I bought it yesterday and haven't been able to get the mobile working at all)...
All very annoying - especially as Spotify can't tell anyone how lonk the fix will take. My son, not thinking, has deleted his Spotify app form his i-pod expecting that he could reload but the app's disappeared from the appstore, too! But, hey, why can't Spotify merely make the previous version available until they've made the new one work properly? I suspect there's more that we're not being told here. And, meantime, we're all still paying £10.
Is there any way that I can Turn of spotify and it's still playing music? Like Ipod functions?
@simontracy: There is no secret agenda here. Apple simply does not allow taking down a new version and letting the old one step in. I will certainly file for such an App Store feature request from Apple as soon as I get back to work Tuesday.
...Even worse, I ordered the premium account it today when the iphone app was no longer availabble in the app store . I think Spotify should have have been telling potential premium users that the app wasn't available. How do I get a refund or an extension?
Hmm, I just deleted Spotify on my ipod because it did not update to version 0.4 and now I'm not able to install it again. That sucks big time, not ok Spotify (!)
It is interesting to hear the announcement about the 'quality assurance' process. I'm a little surprised that Spotify has a QA group. Some of the basic bugs (which I found 1 hour after the original app launch) are still not fixed. For example: 1, Play a play list. Navigate away from the playlist. Re-select the playlist (from the playlist list) that's already playing. You now don't get the icon to show you which track is playing. Interestingly, this does now work if you select the same album via the artist 'i'nfo screen. 2. The banner still changes colour without changing the colour of the buttons on it. Green buttons on a blue banner look silly. I do love the Spotify service and remain a big fan, but there does seem to be some major issues with the development quality. Btw, I'm not impressed by the local track (on iPod) syncronization either. - Why can't I select my local iPod tracks (via Spotify) when I'm offline? - Search Spotify for an album that's already stored locally, it insists on a Wifi connection before syncronizing. Navigation also remains poor. Why oh why, can't we set-up folders to better organize our playlists / albums.
I am not using an iphone but I still have the problem of Spotify saying it doesn't work in offline mode when I am online!!!! Aghhhhh how do I fix this?
I think you should add 'Karpe Diem feat Andreas Grega - Ruter' to Spotify. It's my favourite song atm, and I can only listen to it at youtube etc. I really like Spotify, so I hope you guys can make my experience better by adding that song :) Thank you, in advance.
A wee bit gutted with this release. I'm a huge advocate of Spotify and use it every day. I agree with some of the above comments that this is a very buggy version compared to the previous one. I'm a QA Manager for a large UK website so appreciate that you can't catch all bugs before you go live. Feels like it's worth you guys reviewing your QA and release process but I'm sure you're on the case. As a suggestion, how about more iterative releases with less features more frequently? You'd definitely reduce the level of uncertainty each time you release. For example, it's been (I think) six months since the last iphone app update and you've introduced 15 new features (and I'm sure a load of bug fixes). Instead, you could release an iphone app update each month and only introduce 2 or 3 new features. That's one simple way of mitigating risk and reducing the uncertainty gap each time you release. This will also force you to really prioritise bug fixes and not try and fix too many things at once - the kinda thing which opens up the uncertainty gap as one bug fix creates another unknown bug. Fingers crossed Apple will sign off v0.4.1 soon as I'm also familiar with how slow their sign off process can be. On a positive note, I really like the 'album reviews' and the 'remember where you last were' features.
I have just upgraded to Premium with the hope of using it on a trip for Easter and have now found I cant even download the mobile version from the app store... Is there any chance this may be done before Saturday 3/04 afternoon here in UK or are Apple fairly slow to approve? I was really only starting to use it for this break to test it, but now I can't even do that... I guess there is no way of getting an older version instead temporarily either? Thanks Matt
Didn't mean to sound rude guys, as I understand that these things happen and since reading the others I can see you can't just put the old app straight back on iTunes...It was a better idea to take it off though, otherwise you'd have even more maons on here!! I dont agree with some of the extreme views and I still love the idea...just a shame I picked this weekend to get it and wish I hadn't ordered premium until its back on Appstore as thats the only reason I bought it to use on iPhone for holiday... Appreciate you working over Easter though, even though you can't speed Apple up!
I just got premium too only for the iphone use and right after i paid i saw i couldnt download the client from app store :( really annoying feels like i have paid for nothing >_<
spotify won't even let me log into the old version of the app that I've got on the iphone...is this part of the same problem? also yes an extension would be nice to us 'iphone only users'
I have to say I agree as I only went premium to enjoy the iPhone app. However I appreciate that this is only one of the many features that I am enjoying as a premium subscriber (invites snapped up in minutes, net downtime this morning fine because of offline mode). I just hope that the app will be back with us very soon.
Can someone upload the old spotify app (the spotify.ipa file).
Wish I had known that the app wasn't available before I had paid for premium, as only wanted it for my iphone.
Maybe I´m not the first one to notice this, but playlists created on my iPhone will not load in Spotify on my computer..
Hi I just upgraded to premium TODAY and then found the app had disappeared from the Apple store. I've been on Spotify almost from the start and upgraded today so I could use my iphone. This is poor. Will you extend my premium subscription by the time I lose until the app is back up?
Hi a lot of whining here. Pull your self together! My iPhone app stoped working too and I'm going away for a week from tomorrow. The world wouldn't stop spinning because of a bug. Very unfortunate, yes, but there is more important things to care about. Hope it will be fixed soon so at least half of the vacation can be enjoyed with Spotify. Keep up the good work!
@ a.lagerstrom I have the 0.3.20 version of Spotify. Here's the link for you or anyone else who wants to try! http://www.mediafire.com/file/tgy5mqmiyrm/Spotify.ipa
:( just bought premium account, and now it's not workin. Well hopefully we get the update soon. Happy holidays!
