Spotify Premium UK, magical Mercury Prize competition

mercury-prize.jpgNow hear this! To celebrate the unveiling of this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize winner on Tuesday 8th September, we’ve teamed up with the wonderful people at Mercury to offer our Spotify Premium UK members the chance to win some rather special prizes of their own.

This year the shortlist for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which celebrates the best in British and Irish music, bears witness to a rich crop of outstanding albums from both established and up-and-coming acts, including Bat for Lashes, Florence & The Machine, Friendly Fires, Glasvegas, Kasabian, La Roux, Led Bib, Lisa Hannigan, Speech Debelle, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, The Horrors and The Invisible.

The winner of this year’s Mercury Prize will be announced live on BBC Two as part of the broadcaster’s coverage of the Awards Show, hosted by Jools Holland… and we’ve got a pair of VIP tickets to the show, to be held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, to give away to one lucky member.

If that wasn’t enough, Mercury has delivered us a pumping Bose SoundDock portable digital music system, designed specifically for the iPod, to give away as a special runner’s up prize, together with a silky set of Bose in-ear headphones. Now how’s that for a slice of deep fried gold?

To be in with a chance of winning either of these great prizes, simply leave a comment on this post saying who you think should win this year’s Mercury Prize, and why.

Winners will be contacted on September 2nd. Lycka till! (as they say in Sweden).

Bat For Lashes to win. For being truely original, and creating music with a themeatic vision.

Glasvegas should win!

La Roux should win.

For breaking the cliché, finding a new direction and creating a truely exciting 'difficult second album', The Horrors have surely done more than most to deserve the award.

Definitely Florence & The Machine . They have created and outstanding album making the harp sound like a completely new instrument. Their album is a 100% heaven to listen to. Live they perform as great band and Florence just has an extraordinary beautiful voice.

La Roux for me, original, talented & a worthy prize winner. To be honest though, they are all worthy winners.

Lisa Hannigan "Sea Sew" is a beautiful record.

Cant decide between La Roux, Kasabian and Florence & the machine. [drumroll] and the winner is ...Kasabian!!!

Florence & The Machine for making lovely music.

Speech Debelle should win - anything on Big Dada is worthy

I wish I would win, at least it'd get me out of work for a day! On a serious note, becoming a VIP for a day (evening) sounds like my cup of tea!

I think La Roux will clinch the award; they're refreshing, if not a little annoying.

Thanks to Spotify I've been listening to these acts & normally I would not know too much about them. For me it's between Florence & The Machine and Bats For Lashes.

Glasvegas for me. Beautiful, atmospheric and the best bit of swearing on a record ever...

I think Bat For Lashes should win. Her first album was amazing and she just missed out on winning, and arguably her second album is better - brilliant, atmospheric, and a beautiful siren voice to go along with it. It's thought provoking and has real parallels on modern life - exactly what an award-winning album should be!

Florence & The Machine should win because they are refreshing to listen to.

Do you know there are people in other forgotten countries that would like to have some offers too with their premium membership ? Like France for example...

La Roux should win as their sound is different to everyone else, taking it back to the 80s I would say.

La Roux - very personal style but catchy!

I think Friendly Fires should win, bit of an underdog really :)

Bat For Lashes. For being better than the other ones.

Sweet Billy Pilgrim should win. They capture the essence of a DIY band way more than any Libertine or Arctic Monkey ever could. Recording the album's songs over a three year period in band leader (Tim Elsenburg)'s shed with a laptop and one microphone. Still living off labouring jobs Sweet Billy Pilgrim deserve to win more than anyone else; a profile boost would give them the chance to work full-time on their music. The pure, raw, music talent that flows through the members of this band is extraordinary. So giving this band to create more of their magic would be a blessing to the musical world. Imagine more originality deriving from the tired combination of guitar, drums and bass. This is something that is really needed and Sweet Billy Pilgrim's second album is just a taster of something spectacular to come. That is why they should win.

Speech Debelle should win. Her music is pure, truthful and unlike anything else. Speech Debelle is the musical essence of modern Britain.

Bat For Lashes, for sounding like nothing else.

It's got to be Kasabian, best sounds around (;

lisa hannigan to win. who in the world creates an album around sewing, and makes it sounds so beautiful, heartfelt and uplifting at the same time? she can. :) who knew sewing could be so much fun?!!

La Roux for bringing synth pop back 8-)

Florence + the Machine deserve to win. Stunning debut album, with Flo's great vocals, reminiscent of Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. Original, uplifting and exciting music, with a healthy dash of eccentricity!

I hope for Kasabian

I'd go for Glasvegas. Loved their eponymous album!

Got to be Kasabian, not one bad track on there new album!

I think Florence & the Machine will win but I'd like Bat for Lashes to get the award. La Roux will probably come close.

La Roux to win :).

La Roux should win for their true originality: ginger hair, high pitch vocals and 80's beats combined with great, modern electropop songs.

The Horrors should win. Basically because none of the others are particularly good.

Bat for Lashes, for making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, it's been a while.

I'm going with Glasvegas, though I've got The Horrors playing at the moment (on spotify of course, so can I have the prize please)and I'm liking it!

Bat for Lashes. Her record sounds great.

I think Friendy Fires should win. With the heat at almost 40 degrees and my girlfriend and I jetlagged and hungover, the band's funky dance beats had us jumping about in Chicago shouting about living in Paris and jumping in pools. AND they're better, less derivative than the others.

Sweet Billy Pilgrim deserves the award for putting together an album with a real sense of direction--a logical beginning, middle, and end, and motion from one point to another--and for fusing acoustic and electronic instruments into a cacophony of beauty.

Led Bib should surely win to show the music world that skronk is the new punk!

Dident find any place for suggestions, but i want spotify gear. mugs tshirts etc.. and im surely not the only one! vivala spotify!

Congrats on getting approved by Apple for the iPhone!!! source: http://paidcontent.co.uk/article/419-spotify-says-apple-still-testing-iphone-app-spotify-vanishes-from-app-s/

For me it has to be Bat For Lashes. Coming out of nowhere with such a unique sound and an amazing album! I can't see it happening though and predict La Roux being the winner due to massive popularity and multiple chart successes — that and her tour with Lily Allen.

Definetly Glasvegas!

Florence + the Machine - Lungs is an absolutely stunning debut album and utterly original sound.

Horrors for the audacity to create an LP when the concept of an album as opposed to a string of singles would appear to signal career suicide in the digital era. Oh, and I haven't heard most of the others much aside from a few catchy tunes that I'm sure to tire of in the next few weeks. Yeah, Spotify for the iphone. Nice.

Spotify for iPhone has been approved by Apple :-) http://www.9to5mac.com/node/8762

Its a toss up between Kasabian and Bats for Lashes but the winner is (drum roll) 'Bats for Lashes', a unique and original talent.

Glasvegas for the most emotionaly stirring, soaring, spine tingling album in years!
