Spotify and McAfee – a little mix-up

A little bit of unwanted excitement today when McAfee released an update to their virus definition file. This caused the antivirus software to falsely identify Spotify as a virus. Both Spotify and MacAfee are aware of this problem and they have released an update for their antivirus software.

I can assure you that Spotify is not a virus and contains no virus files, this is simply a misunderstanding on McAfee’s part.

A statement from them says: “This issue will be resolved in an early release of the 5623 DAT today (22nd May, 2009). Your McAfee products will update to this DAT version in the normal way and no additional action is required on your part.” You can also download the latest DAT version directly from their website.

To get Spotify working again, we suggest that you update your virus definition file now, you can normally do this by right clicking the McAfee icon in your system tray and selecting “Update”. If necessary, you can remove Spotify from your quarantine list as described by McAfee.

If you need to reinstall Spotify it is quite easy to do and you can always log in with your existing account, no need to create a new one. You can download the installer from our website if necessary.

We’re really sorry that this happened but we hope everyone can get back up and running in time for a nice weekend.

miss you hurry back

Thanks for the explanation - glad it's sorted!

Good work. Apologies for comments from the few who clearly didn't see which program was at fault. Still, must be nice to know how strongly people feel about Spotify. Long live it!

Mcafee är helt dumma i huvudet och är skyldiga mig en eftermiddag...

Hmm... tried all you suggest and it's still not resolving

Yeah...same here, still not working... :((((

how do i know which dat to use?

it says cant find mcafee products

I've got the same problem, I tried all you suggest and it’s still not resolving. McAfee is still removing the spotify.exe file.

@manendran, thrashatonement - Can you confirm that you have the latest DAT, 5623? They claim it's been fixed but you might want to confirm with them.

never mind. It works already :D

got it now!! try updating the virus definitions: right click on McFee icon and click on 'updates' It will automatically update it and then you should be able to install spotify again. Hope it works.

To find out if you have the 5623 DAT file, right-click the M icon in your taskbar and choose About.

i downloaded the 5623 from their website and still nothing, it says cant find qualifying mcafee products

ok, i noticed a little mcafee update thing in my system tray and after it installed its working now, yayyyyyy!!!!!!

I was so annoyed with McAfee I uninstalled the whole suited and went straight to re-install Spotify.

Thank goodness! Thanks to both Spotify and McAfee for the speedy solution. :)

Installing the latest DAT file solves the problem completely, everything working fine now :)

Glad to hear this has resolved the issue for McAfee users promptly.

I had the same problem with COMODO :]

It´s not only MacAfee! - also Comodo that´s normally good. I have had the same problem as those with McAfee..

i get http://service.mcafee.com/Error.aspx when i press "as descibed by mcafee"...

Thank you! Will be so good to have Spotify back - a day without it has been bloody hard!

I got it running again, its been tough studying without music. Thanks.

I still can't get it to run!

Panic over. Glad your back!

This glitch has come exactly at the point that my McAfee subscription has expired. I was not going to renew with them. I am now without Spotify and apparently the only way I can resolve this is by going with McAfee. Why on earth should I? They should give me the patch straight away - questions asked. Can anyone help?

MACAFEE REALLY SUCKS! They have always done that. I have changed to NOD32, a great software!

Thank you 4 swiftly work, well done and said as always, u put heart and soul all for the users big up for spotify (",)

thanx... don't know how i'd cope without you guyz... i really missed spotify... good job fixing the problem quickly

Even though my spotify.exe was deleted i`m still satisfied that Mcafee really takes threats seriously. And i`m happy that they sorted it out quickly.

Good for you 'whipydino' but what about guys like me that have been left in the dirt. I've gone to McAfee website and the relevant customer service link for my area isn't working!!! How convenient.

Big thanks to Martin. McAfee has been binned and NOD32 installed. Never knew about it but now I do and I'm delighted to have my Spotify back. Hurrah!

Get the hell over McAfee and install a new virus checker people. Seriously, do not use McAfee - it sucks

fix it, have spotify for an week and i am not impressed, mayby ill get somting else. i dont want to put my money on this shit

Many thanks Spotify and McAfee. Job sorted. But reading these comments, why is it that when mistakes happen, there is always some prat ready to go overboard? McAfee made a mistake, they sorted it, no problem. They have saved my bacon a couple of times and I for one am grateful. Get of your high horses and be grateful that it's been dealt with.

How do you get spotify to keep coming up instead of having to install and download it everytime. As i always have to download it everytime i want to use it because i dont know how to make spotify come up automatically. If you could give me the answer to this question I would be grateful! Thanks luv Seza.xx

What about all of us that does not have McAfee and still have the error 101 or error 117 problems. When are you going to find a solution for us????? I have opened my firewall both on the PC and the router and I can still not log in. There are several threads about this on your forum but no help! It sucks and I am really glad that I don't pay any money for this shit.

sezza: Go to C:\Program Files\Spotify and drag spotify.exe to your desktop whilst pressing 'Alt'.

don't know what to do, im missing to listen to my playlist's!

YAY! My life is back. Thanks spotify.

There is a similar issue with AVG 8.5 and Windows 7. Spotify takes more than 30 seconds to start with this combination - the workaround is to add the Spotify program folder to AVG's exceptions. Problem does not occur in Vista.

Yes it was a problem for a while. Bit anoyed that mcafee didn't send a fix solution. But managed to continue with a quick uninstall of 'spotify' and re-install with user name and password immediatly. Good to have it back and working.

lol - just get a mac

I spent many, many hours at home creating two playlists for my upcoming birthday party on Monday evening. I both opened a new playlist (Dansehits) and renamed an old list (from Lørdagsvask to Bursdag) and put a lot of songs in it. When I logged on Tuesday at my work computer both the new playlists were there (Dansehits and Bursdag). Now that I log on - one of the playlists (the new renamed and really, really long one) is gone, and is replaced with the old playlist (Lørdagsvask). Will the one I spent hours on making (Bursdag) ever come back?

I've just managed to log on today - and none of my playlists are there!! will they return??

This is really very frustrating...For 2 weeks now everyday one gets the same message saying it is not working! Sad really, as the concept is excellent but it seems like a waste of time... I think Spotify need to come clean as to what the real problem is too...Greedy lawyers I presume?
