Personal accounts are personal

Spotify’s business model is partially based on well targeted advertising. The targeting won’t work particularly well if users share accounts. In order to be able to keep providing you with a music service that’s great for fans as well as artists, we need to start preventing account sharing in the beta test. We still want you to be able to use your Spotify account from multiple locations, though, since that’s part of our core philosophy.

The way we have implemented this is that while you can be logged in from many places (such as your home and your office), you can only stream music to one location at a time. If you’re having breakfast and listen to Spotify at home and leave it running while taking off to work, once you’re sitting comfortably in your office chair and turn on the music again, your kitchen computer streaming Spotify music at home will be paused.

Multi user error message

As long as you’re the only one using the account, this is fine. However, if you think someone might have gotten access to your password, now is a good time to change it.

=) sounds good, any news when you guys are going to release it?

@iop We dont have a specific launch date, we'll launch when we're ready and have enough content :)

Good feature. Keep up the great work, Sophia and the team at Spotify!

@nohad: That's not a feature. It is an added limitation to prevent users from sharing accounts.

Understandble limitation, but it does meen that in a household every member of the family will need to pay for their own subscrition in order to have access to music...might be a concern in terms of how attractive the service is. That being said, you guys rock, and I absolutely love what you have done so far!

Yeh it is a understandable limitation, but as emilhedman commented above about that each family member has to pay for their own version. Why not make family paks for a lower payment where you can also choose the number of accounts and one monthly bill for the family, that would be great. And guys great work with spotify, its magic all the way!

I like it werry much. I got 5 computers, do Spotify from home, at work, at my girlfriendsplace and ofcourse i forgot to turn it of some times. Cheers.

If I would like to kick someone, who is on my acc, how would that work?

Any thoughts of having 'family' accounts so that multiple people can stream at once?

I would also like to see a family account, my wife and I would like to be able to simultaneously play music from two different locations/devices.

This issue has postponed my purchase. You need some sort of discount for families. I'd consider paying $15/month for an individual + 1 account, $20 for individual + 2, etc... I just can't justify paying $10/month/person for my household. My money is ready, let me know when you are.

+1 for having a family account. I agree with the tiered pricing that @CraigManske is proposing: $15 for individual + 1 acct. Or another way to think about it: give me a discount for signing up people! Spotify is already a great service; make it that much more attractive for me to spread the word to my family and friends!

+1 for having a family account. The service is great and well worth the $10/month that I shouldn't be spending. I've already gotten multiple friends hooked on the service. Problem is I have 2 other family members in my household that would also like to join in on the fun but there's no way $30/month for 3 accounts is worth it. Additionally I wouldn't want 3 separate accounts where I'd have to share playlists in order to keep them in sync.

+1 again on a family account. jshuff said it just right. I'd be delighted to spring for a family membership at an appropriate discount, but spending $10 for me, then $10x(n) for kids, plus spouse,... that's real money.

I would love to see a family account option also, 2 accounts for $15 would be reasonable, right now we are sharing one account but i'd rather have 2 with a slight discount.

+1 on the family account, let me know when you make this happen.

I'd be happy to pay extra to be able to stream in two places at once. Heck, if I could create a separate account just for our shared Squeezebox Radio in the house, that'd be fine. Except I'm quite sure that just like children under 13 years of age, inanimate objects like my Squeezebox Radio is not allowed to have a Facebook account. No facebook account, no Spotify, right? I also can't give my daughter access to Spotify on her computer, because she also isn't allowed a Facebook account (because she's under 13, not because she's inanimate. Trust me. She's quite animate). Soren, Denmark, a very new and very excited customer.

if you are on a phone or idevice just go offline then you can stream simultaneously

yeah family accounts would be great +1 families don't buy two cable connections... two identical copies of the same dvd... two internet connections... makes sense to mimic the model people are used to for everything else.

+! for a family plan. I won't buy two separate accounts when we will be listing to one of them together 40% of the time. I will pay more for two people access though.

+1 for a family plan. i won't buy two separate accounts - I worked out "listening times" with my girl though so we are both happy sharing one account in the meantime. definitely an opportunity to make money for spotify as I have several friends who share their accounts within the family as well.

+1 for the family plan. I'd love to let my wife use spotify for her yoga teaching music and be able for me to take some of our library on the road. But I don't want 2 different accounts. Would pay slightly more for multi-user.

I was considering switching to Spotify instead of using iTunes for my music needs. However only being able to access from one endpoint is the #1 biggest reason why I am not going to do so. My wife and I can easily share music purchased from our iTunes account on different devices at different locations all throughout the day. Paying for 2 subscriptions for one family is not a good business model in my opinion. I've got a lot of my friends to start using spotify and now I'm starting to regret that.

+1 for the family plan.

I would love the idea to get somewhere. Any comments from staff please?

+1, need it for us as brothers, we will continue to share an account otherwise.

I too would be willing to purchase if family accounts exist. An update from staff would be nice.

+1, I would gladly pay 5-10 bucks extra to be able to listen to music those 2 hours a week I'm out running...

+1 for family plan!

+1 for the family plan! It's just not worth paying the full account price for me and my wife. Most of the time we are listening to the same stuff together, but at work only having one work at a time sucks.

+1 for me. I share my account with my daughter and its fun testing each others taste in music and sharing. You need a midway price point between 1 and 2 users, say 5GBP?

+1 for the family plan. Just do it like apple used to sell family plans for "mobile me". Provide a family account with the ability to create subaccounts. So you are able to target us, we'll be happy with listening to you.

Spotify have been ignoring this for 3 years now. Good listening people. Trying Spotify for the first time because its now available in Australia. NEWSFLASH! We won't be paying for 3 accounts for me, my wife and my son. We will use one account. Your targeted advertising is going to suck. On the other hand, if you were to offer a family plan.... You've heard the rest, and ignored it.
