Searching Spotify

One of the core features of Spotify is searching. You just type the name of an artist or a song into the search bar and off you go. Normally that’s all you need to get the Spotify experience: you know, when you think of some music and literally seconds later you’re listening to it.

There are cases, though, when you need to refine your queries. Perhaps you don’t want to search for “madonna“, because you’re not looking for the artist Madonna, but rather songs whose titles include the word “madonna”. Then you can search for “title:madonna“.

Similarly, you can search for “album:madonna” and “artist:madonna” to find only matching albums and artists, respectively.

To further refine your searches (or to indulge in some nostalgia or browse through a new musical genre), you can search for a year, a range of years or a genre: “year:1969“, “year:1994-1996” or “genre:soul“.

Logically, you can use combinations to search for techno from the early 90s or Grateful Dead songs from the late 60s: “genre:techno year:1990-1995” or “artist:”grateful dead” year:1965-1970“. In the latter example, you see how you can use quotes to control to what parts of the search string a keyword applies.

Can I do combinations for instance: "artist:bowie year:1960-1970 OR artist:grateful dead year:1965-1970"?

Ah! Found it. artist:"grateful dead" OR artist:madonna works, but artist:"grateful dead" or artist:madonna... even this works if you don't like Kaney West :-) artist:"grateful dead" OR artist:madonna NOT artist:"Kaney West"

Is it possible to search by country, for instance if you like me likes french hiphop, is it possible to search "genre:hip-hop country:france" is doesn't seem to work, help anyone?!

I second the request to search by country. Would be nice.

Who listen to french hiphop anyway? :P

and I would, of course, like to know what genres there are. Couldn't for example find "emo"

one thing i would like to be able to do is search music from from a certain record label. is this possible?

It's only possible to search for labels if they're included in the track, artist or album title I guess. But here's another nice little tip for you all: In order to exclude a certain search term or phrase you can use the minus sign prefix (-). E.g. artist:elvis -presley year:1970-1980 -year:1975-1979 (to make it unnecessarily complicated;) will result in the album "Get Happy!" with Elvis Costello from 1980.

If i search for breakbeat or drum and bass I get nothing. It should be easier to find the genre you want, maybe a menu or something? Great software though!

It is hard to do a search while listening to music because pause is on the space button. Should be better to change the button to a not so frequent used one.

Would be good to have search in fields divided in feelings like happy, sad, angry, party, romantic etc.

Excellent! :)

Second the request to get full genre list. Also, "genre:prog" and the likes gives no returns :(

Is it possible to search artist from a certain country? example Norway? example Country:Norway

and why can't you search within your own playlist? that would be a nice option if you ask me...

Can you list all the "Genre" ? Chould you please show witch genre a specific song/artist belongs to. Futhermore it seems to be some trouble to "import" others playlists.

I can't get anything other than simple search to work. Any query with : gets a 'can't find' response. Is this a premium-only feature?

. . . oops! My mistake - I hadn't realised that there are no spaces before or after the : v. red face!

That search by country feature would be really nice! And that full genre list also.

I would assume the genres are the same as you can choose from when playing radio: Alternative, Blues, Country, Disco, Funk, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop, House, Jazz, New Wave, R&B, Pop, Punk, Reggae, Rock, Soul, and Techno. What would be useful to know is to which genre your currently playing track or album belongs, so as to be able to get a useful tip as to how spotify has organised it's genres.

Please, I'd like to search by country...

@toastmonster: There is at least one more genre: celtic. Enter this in your search field: genre:celtic If you want to search for what genres are possible, you can enter an artist name in your search field: artist:tina turner Then click on "Tina Turner" to get more info about her. Then click "Artist radio". Beneath the picture of the artist you will see what genres are associated with that artist. So.. Can someone make a list of all searchable genres now? :).

Is there a need for listing all genres when they are easily found? (just a thought). One feature that I'm missing is the classifcation of single tracks. As far as I can see a track doesn't belong to any specific genre, but rather the genre of the arist...This nakes it incredibly hard to search for just soft/rock tracks since most artists that belong to that genre also belong to rock or even hard rock(!). So, I propose a genre attribute for each track. And, since it would be a daunting task to set the genre for each track centrally (by spotify) this task should be done by the the spotify users themselves. SImply let a track belong to that genre that most users think it belongs to. Please Spotify, in the next version, include this feature. Or has anyone a better idea? Comment -anyone?

i had a singer in my playlist (a swedish singer) for a long time. i dont know why, now i dont have the songs and i search for the singer again and all songs and singer are dissapeared. why???????????????

@robertogv84 this might be what you are looking for: https://www.spotify.com/blog/archives/2009/01/28/some-important-changes-to-the-spotify-music-catalogue/ unfortunately :(

I may be being dim but.. I want a playlist for the band Air so type "Artist:Air" and I get a load of air. But I also get "Air Supply" and "Air Traffic" which i dont want to hear. Any ideas how o get just Air Thanks

I second the request for a label: search

Hi, I am a blind lady using spotify. Most of it is very usable, but I have difficulties locating a playlist I have started to create. Using a screen reader as I do, I cant find it. Is it therefore possible to search for say "playlist: then the name of my playlist". Any help much appreciated.

"Second the request to get full genre list. Also, “genre:prog” and the likes gives no returns :( " I have the same problem, it gives no return on hard rock, metal or heavy metal. This search is completely useless if you don't have proper genres present. :(

@vulfgar: http://open.spotify.com/search/genre:%22hard%20rock%22 and http://open.spotify.com/search/genre:%22heavy%20metal%22 work for me.

How do I get started? - I can;t find the search box or the home page

Hm, where is the list of all available genres?

It's great with search strings, but really: it should be more user friendly than that, serch strings is more like programmer friendly, how about an "advanced search", with genre, years, label, country, etc ... And the possibility to see info on producer, musicians, etc. You already seem to have a deal with allmusic.com on biographies, include info on participating people etc in that deal too! Love spotify!

I've written an advanced search tool called "Spotify Super Search" http://sss.pansentient.com/ With Spotify Super Search you can: - Create an advanced search query then click Search to search directly in Spotify - Select whether to search on Artist, Album, Track, or any field - Specify whether the result matches, contains, or does not contain your query - Chain queries together using boolean AND and OR picklists - Seach based on year: exact match, before a certain year, after a certain year, or was released within a range - Search based on genre. There are over 200 genres used in Spotify: Spotify Super Search lets you select and search on any of them. I hope you find this useful!

Re Spotify Super Search - I'm interested in early sixties pop. Searching in Super Search for year: 1961 to 1962 genre: pop/rock gave me 30 Elvis Presley tracks and searching for year: 1961 genre: pop/rock gave me 12 Everley Brothers tracks. Nothing else. What's gone wrong?

Thanks for your feedback pbroadbent. Note on your first search, you need to set the second pulldown to "to" (not "any") i.e. make sure it's: "from" 1961 "to" 1962 This should return 42 tracks, Elvis and the Everleys. If you search for: "is" 1961 "any" 1962 This just assumes you meant "year is 1961" and it ignores the "any 1962" bit. Perhaps you've highlighted a user-interface problem: I will add some better checks. Thanks again!

Thank you afront. Does this mean that the only pop/rock tracks held on Spotify from 1961 and 1962 are those 42 Elvis and Everleys tracks? If not, how do I find all the others? I was hoping to "indulge in some nostalgia" and browse through all the early sixties hits.

I think it depends on a couple things: how the record labels have tagged their tracks (e.g. did they tag it with Pop, with Rock, with Pop/Rock, with Rock 'n' Roll or any number of these), and secondly when the album the tracks are on was released. A song might have been released in 1961, but if it's only on a compilation album released in 2008, then the year for that song will be 2008. Anyway I did a quick search of 1961 - 1962 and tried some other genres: "Rock" gives 353 tracks "Rock & Roll" gives 154 tracks "Pop" gives 212 tracks I've updated Spotify Super Search to make it easier to search by year range. I've also added a dozen or so more genres (total now is 212). If anyone from Spotify is reading this and they happen to have a Google Doc with a list of genres used in Spotify, that would be most helpful!

Thanks afront for your search utility at http://sss.pansentient.com/ It's great and saves loads of time!

Is it possible to search by record company? If I like the Shins from SubPop, it would be nice to check out similar artists from that label:)

Please, make it possible to search by label!!!

I'd like to see queries with AND/OR/NOT... I mean you can use something like: (artist:clash AND year:2008) OR artist:steppenwolf etc...

genre:acoustic would be soo sweet!

From a librarian's point of view there are two big unpleasant issues in Spotify: (1) one cannot really browse the catalog and (2) the guiding text are not available on the screen you are making the searches. I do understand, that everything is not "ready" yet, but especially the need to look for search tips from here is really frustrating. I cannot believe that there is not "space" enough to give the useful tips near the SEARCH box.

label searching would be an excellent tool. for instance - i like the DJ Signify album sleep no more on Lex, but as a relative newcomer, know nothing of label mates and so on, so my exposure to Lex is pretty limited. As labels licence their content for spotify to use, a label search term would be value-for-money for both labels and beneficial for the interested listener.

I'm a 50's & 60's nut ( middle-aged you see !! )...been reading the search debate...I might suggest the right column is very useful, giving the name of album, usually various artists. i have found lots of extra tracks I wasn't expecting. So just because what you're looking for doesn't come up smacking you in the face, keep clicking around, click everything, artist ,song, album....My wife ain't seen me for two days, I feel like I'm in aladins cave....FANTASTIC SPOTIFY...thanks

you guys really need to sort out the UI on the main page. As a new user, how the heck am I supposed to remember all this genre: and album: and artist: etc. I love Spotify, but as a newcomer I can only realise its full potential by reading thru all these blogs, downloading your google docs etc. Make it easier on the main Spotify page!

Re: vidsan, If you type in "genre:Prog-Rock/Art Rock" it comes up with what you want. For a full genre listing go to http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=psnjFY3R2itsqjinSs9hkZw

Hey! I would like to be able to browse the content. Your tags are also not very specific. I tried the search but genre:gothic brings out nothing (or I made it wrong). Is it possible to have better tagging? Or what do you suggest I should do if I want to find for example gothic or symphonic metal? Genre:industrial seem to work though...

Saw the genre listing now, it seems very helpful, thanks! :)
