Spotify for Blackberry

Information about the Spotify Blackberry app.

Supported phones

Below is the current list of officially supported Blackberry device models, on which the app has been tested:

  • 9780 Bold
  • 9700 Bold
  • 9300 Curve
  • 9000 Bold
  • 8520 Curve

The app may work on additional Blackberry models, but we cannot be sure that all features will function properly.

CDMA phones are not currently supported

Currently the app only supports phones running on GSM networks. CDMA-network (for instance Sprint and Verizon) phones and the Torch 9800 are not yet compatible. This is due to Blackberry hardware issues related to the decoding of the Ogg format that Spotify uses for streaming.

Where to download the Spotify Blackberry app

Visit m.spotify.com with your Blackberry’s web browser, where you will be prompted to download the installer.

Can I use Spotify mobile without having a Premium subscription?

If you have an iPhone or Android mobile, you can use Spotify to transfer your local files from your computer to your phone and listen to Spotify application on your mobile.

If you have a subscription to Spotify Premium, you will also be able to search, play and sync offline playlists with our entire music catalog of more than 13 million songs.

If you have a Symbian, Windows or Palm mobile compatible with Spotify you need a Spotify Premium subscription to use Spotify on your mobile.

How many tracks can I sync to offline playlists?

You can have up to 3,333 tracks from the Spotify streaming catalogue synced for offline use, on each of up to 3 computers/devices at any time.

There is no limit to the number of your own imported local files that you can sync to offline playlists on any device

What connection do I need to stream music on the mobile?

You’ll need at least a 3G connection in order to stream music. For best performance we suggest you sync your playlists using wifi and then listen to them while on the go.

Can I use offline mode on more than one computer or mobile phone?

Yes. You can have offline-synced playlists on up to three devices (mobile or computer) at a time.

Can I use on the underground/without network connection?

Yes. By synching your playlists for offline mode you will be able to listen anywhere, including the underground or on a plane.

What quality does Spotify stream in?

We use the Ogg Vorbis format for streaming. There are three quality ratings that we use:

  • q3 (~96 kbps)
  • q5 (~160 kbps)
  • q9 (~320 kbps)

Note: not all tracks are currently available in high bitrate.

Desktop: Streams are q5 quality. Premium subscribers can enable higher bit rate streaming at q9 from the preferences menu.

Mobile: A higher quality q5 is offered, along with a “low bandwidth” option of q3. You can choose separate qualities ratings for streaming and synching in the More tab of your Spotify mobile app.

How long can I cache offline content on my computer or mobile device?

This depends up upon the type of content..

Will Spotify for iPhone work with iPod Touch?

Yes. The Spotify iPhone app will run on the iPod touch in the same way that it does on the iPhone (except that internet access is only over wi-fi).

Please note that iOS 4 is a requirement in the latest releases of the Spotify iPhone app. Any iPod touch version that cannot be upgraded to iOS 4 cannot run the Spotify app.

Will it cost me a lot to stream music?

This depends on your mobile data plan. To avoid any additional fees we suggest that you sync your playlists offline using wifi and then listen to them while on the go.

How do I get Spotify for my mobile?

First, take a look at our Mobile section. On the Overview page, you can find out if your mobile device is supported.

The mobile apps themselves are free, and some versions can be used for playing your own music files, but you will need Spotify Premium to take advantage of fully-featured Spotify mobile streaming and offline mode. Read more

Why does the iPhone/iPod sometimes stop syncing offline playlists?

The device will switch off wifi when it goes into sleep mode if the charger is not connected. We recommend that you keep the charger connected when syncing, or consider setting the screen lock timer to “never”.

Do the mobile apps support scrobbling?

Scrobbling is currently supported in the Spotify apps for Android and iOS devices.

Does Spotify Mobile work with all headsets and docking stations, like iTrip and others?

Spotify has done its best to make sure Spotify Mobile works according to the standards that are available on the market. However, some headsets, docking stations and other accessories might not work correctly with Spotify. Some of these are designed to only work with the device’s built in player. For some docking stations updating the firmware can help when playing music from Spotify while docked.

Error 117 (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch)

User have reported this problem when connected via Wifi, usually when at work. Error 117 is an access point restriction/firewall indication which indicates that Spotify can’t connect on the current wifi setup. If you get Error 117 please try: - another WiFi network without restrictions or
- Connect over 3G with your iPhone (ensure that you have a flat rate data plan)

I have to login every time I start up Spotify on my Android phone

Uninstall Spotify under ‘Settings’ -> ‘Applications’ in the phone menu and then download and install it again from the Android Market.

Offline access for this computer/device has been withdrawn.

If you find that you cannot mark playlists as “Available offline”, restarting your device/computer will allow you to authorise it for offline synchronisation again.

Which Windows Mobile phones are supported?

We recommend the following handsets:

  • HTC HD2
  • HTC Touch Pro 2
  • Samsung Omnia 2
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia 1
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia 2

However, Spotify should work very well on any Windows Mobile 6.x phone as long as the screen resolution is 800x480. You can search for your phone on www.gsmarena.com to find out which screen resolution your specific phone has.

Support for other screen resolutions

We are always working to improve Spotify and extend support for more models, with other screen resolutions than 800x480. However, we haven’t got any news at the moment. Keep an eye on the Spotify blog for updates.

Support for Windows Phone 7

Spotify will start building the app for Windows Phone 7, but we have no news at the moment as to when it will be available.

Please note: Palm apps, including Spotify Mobile, are only available in the UK, Spain and France.

Can I have offline playlists on more than three devices?

No, three is the maximum. If you try to register a fourth, an existing device will be lost to accommodate it.

So, if you receive a message saying “you have logged into more then three devices and you will now be logged out” you need to re-authorize that device. Simply restart your device/computer and re-launch Spotify - you should be good to go.

Why am I having problems synching to my mobile phone using WiFi?

First, make sure that you’re connected to a functioning WiFi and that you’ve connected your device to a power supply.

If this doesn’t help, please try to reinstall Spotify. You could also try the following settings on your router:

  1. Open the Firewall for 78.31.8.0/21
  2. Open port 4070 and 80 for TCP

To reinstall Spotify, please:

  1. (Android/Symbian) Clear the application cache
  2. Remove Spotify
  3. Re-install Spotify
Play has been paused

Since a Spotify user can login to their account from any computer or device (”installation”), the service is programmed to only allow play from on installation at a time. When Spotify is played from another installation, play will be paused on the current installation. It can be started again simply by pressing the Play button.

If you receive the message, “Spotify has been paused because your account is used somewhere else”, it is possible that you have logged into your account on another installation, with the “Remember me” box selected, and have not logged out. In this case, another person with access to the computer can use the installation logged into your account.

Our apologies. This may have been a false detection caused by a bug

We have received occasional reports of the “Spotify has been paused..” message appearing in cases where the user is absolutely certain that they have not logged into their Spotify account on another computer, and where it is highly unlikely that their password has been comprimised. It is possible that a rare system bug will create such false reports. In this case, you should be able to start play again, as usual, and should not suffer any more than one or two more pauses over a short period.

We apologise for this inconvenience, and will work to try to prevent this from happening. Please contact us again if you find that the pausing behaviour is more persistent than described above.

If you do suspect..

However, if you believe that this not caused by a bug in our system, and that someone else is actually using your account on another computer, the first step to take is to change your password. You can do this on your account profile page on the Spotify website. If you have forgotten your password, you can request a password reset token.

However, resetting your password will not exclude the user logged on with the other computer until they logout. If they do not logout, they will be forced to login again the next time we roll out an upgrade to the Spotify application. Currently, we do this every 2-3 weeks.

Android: How to store offline music on the external SD card

Some Android phones have both internal storage and an SD card slot. In order for Spotify to use the SD card for storage of offline playlists, you will need to manually specify which folder you want it to use. Please keep in mind that your offline playlists will need to be re-synced after doing this:

  1. Open Spotify in your mobile
  2. Go to “More”, “Settings” and select “Clear saved data”
  3. Press More and then Log Out
  4. While at the login screen, press the hardware Menu key and select SD Location
  5. Enter the path to a folder on the SD card

Finding the exact path to your SD card can be done with a file manager, and can differ between phones. On the Samsung Galaxy S, for example, you should use:

/mnt/sdcard/external_sd

Spotify will then store tracks in this folder:

/mnt/sdcard/external_sd/Android/Data/com.spotify.mobile.android.ui

My device is not shown in Spotify's Devices list

Applies to: Android, iPhone (and other iOS devices)

First, make sure that you have Spotify running on your phone. If your phone is still not appearing please make sure that you are logged in to Spotify with the same username on your phone as on your computer, and that you are connected to the same wifi network, without using a cable. Then restart the Spotify app on your phone.

Note: It is common for the phone to disconnect from the wifi after a couple of minutes in sleep mode. This may cause it to disappear from the Devices list in Spotify. It should re-appear in the Devices list again if you wake the device up from sleep mode.

Symbian: Why doesn’t Spotify store files on my memory card?
