You may have noticed that last night was a little quieter than usual as we experienced some technical difficulties and I wanted to update everyone on what happened. Saturday evening there was a power outage at a large data site in London where we host some of our servers. The backup power kicked in as planned, however, one of the big air conditioners in the data centre did not start properly. Heat is a major issue in large data centres and without this cooling unit the temperature rose very quickly and our servers shut down to protect themselves from over heating. Once we discovered the source of the problem we started work on bringing the servers back online but because of the large number of servers and the complexity of the system it took a few hours to get everything up and running again.
Currently all systems are working properly - a few premium users may have some billing anomalies due to the outage but we will contact those users directly to resolve any issues, billing issues have been resolved see below for an update. If you experience troubles connecting please try downloading and reinstalling Spotify.
Having a stable and secure service is extremely important to us. We’re very sorry for the silence this caused and I can assure you that over the next few days and weeks we’ll be working to make sure that this does not happen again.
Update Feb 24: We have reversed and refunded any incorrect or double payments so if you have billing errors it will be automatically resolved. If you have any further question about your payments please contact our support.

No problem. As a paying customer, I just listened to my playlist in off-line mode.
Same as drfm :) Well, good you guys fixed it :D
Thanks for keeping us informed, thankfully I was in Portsmouth so I didn't even notice it'd gone down.
Not a paying customer, I did everything to try and fix the problem as I thought it was my computer but then realised it wasn't... thanks for fixing it!
Thanks for the update, Andres! Things like this happen, and are going to happen to more and more users as we become more reliant on server-based services: the key thing, I think, is that we learn to live with it every so often. It seems Spotify did everything it could to fix things as quickly as it could: that, for me anyway, is more than enough. Thank you.
Thanks for the info! I too did all the bits and bobs thinking it was my computer! I'm in Portsmouth as well, strange that it affected me but not my boyfriend 10 metres away...
I couldn't use it for a long while. As compensation you should let premium users use a new beta if they want to!
When Spotify wouldn't log on I tried to see if there was any news on Spotify.com. That seemed to be down too, so I tried Twitter to see if you were leaving any infomation. Any you were. Excellent work. What's important in these inevitable situations is to keep people informed of what's happening, and you did that really well, Thank you.
I was angry at the time. I am a paying customer, so these things are always a little more frustrating if you are paying good money. Thanks for the update anyway, it is much appreciated. Thanks
Awesome, thanks for the update. I also checked a few things on my computer too. I thought that it would be a good idea to check your website but that was down so I guessed that it was actually Spotify that was not working. I checked your Twitter page and it was all there. Thank you
Thank you for using twitter to update us, it was very useful! Thankfully I bought premium the day before so listened offline. Great job on the quick fix.
Thanks for keeping everyone informed. That's something plenty of other companies could learn from - what really annoys people isn't so much that there are problems but that they are never told why nor what is being done about it. Well done.
hi guys i i havre got spofify on my laptop and on my main pc i can log in to it on my laptop bu tcan tlog into it on my pc can u help me cuz i reali would liek to uise it now lol
Big deal, systems fail. At least you got right to it and fixed it as soon as you could and kept us informed. Someone said it above and I agree. Keeping the customer informed goes a long long way, well done :)
As another paying customer, all I have to say is thank you for the heads up and keep doing a terrific job.
Thankyou for fixing it :)
What I am not a contracted in Premium, but just as some others also believed the problem lay in my computer, perhaps firewall? my Internet connection? Not knew. thanks for the explanation, demonstrates honest rigour and seriousness. Francesc
Ideally there should be a redundant set of servers at a different site. Unless you own the datacenter you can't prevent datacenter issues. You should also routinely direct and re-direct traffic to both sites in an appropriate split to keep yourselves sure that in an emergency one site can manage the full load. You can also use a redundant setup to create phased rollouts and testing strategies for new server side software.
Thanks for letting people know. Keep up the good work!
glad everythings fixed now, and thanks for the updates on twitter. like many people i thought it was my computer at first, but your tweets kept me updated... thanks!!
Hi, its still not working for me - tried logging in and out several times but keep getting error message 308 unable to auto update spotify? what should I do?
yes can't get it to work either at 6.10 pm i am in Bedfordshire..
Me too. Same error. What's going on Spotify??
@justinse10 - if you're having trouble auto-updating please download the latest version of Spotify from our website and reinstall.
Did that - still same error...
sorry...sorted...thanks v much
Some said EMI did this one. But it was so obvious that there was a technical issue. When the problem first appeared, I was listening. Music stopped suddenly and Error No:0 was the only thing I saw for a long time. Even the www.spotify.com was unreachable. So Twitter became the only communication between us. Thank you for your immediate action and for the information.
My Spotify still doesn't work... :( (I'm not using premium)
No prob for me! I'm a premium user so i just played my offline playlists..
Premium is worth every dime!
yeah I am getting the Spotify update error too just now which led me to here. Have logged out and back in several times. Restarted PC too. Either get an error code 501 or 308.
To all those who thought it might have been their computer: you can save some time and confusion by going to http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ :)
i cant get on withe the android , it keeps force close, that may be the prob on the servers
Forget Saturday night, what about all the time. I am a premium subscriber and on the verge of chucking it in. Streaming is very poor with play 10 seconds then 5 minutes for the next 10 seconds and trying to sync 13 tracks for offline use is showing 3 weeks left to finish. I use Virgin 8mb (can only get about 1.6 mb download, ping is good)what is going on. Can not find a direct e-mail link to Spotify. How do you talk to somebody? This happens all the time. Sort it out!
still having a problemo :( error 308, tried the loginlogout but no change! How do I re-download spotify (cant get past the "invite" requirement on spotify.com!) HELP i need music!
@zilberbak - It sounds like your internet provider could be throttling Spotify traffic causing that issue. You can contact our support here and they can try and help: https://www.spotify.com/en/about/contact/contact-spotify-support/?contact @rhydspot - Click the "Download" link at the top of our site.
i use premium.. and iam used to play in offline mode but for some reason it didnt work either.. so it was only silence for me =/
Am having the same problem (not a premium subscriber so also have issue with the invite requirement).
All is well. Was able to reinstall without any problems!
Solve the "error 301" problem by downloding and installing spotify again... https://www.spotify.com/en/download/windows/ It worked for me.. //Etefe
You picked the one night I was reinstalling my computer, laugh at it now but was swearing a bit last night, good to be honest
Thanks, andres. Downloading and installing helped. Didn't even have to restart my PC. (am not a premium user and got error code 308). Now Spotify is working perfectly !!
I'm still being forced into Offline mode - is it related?
i think spotify is an amazing service especially as it is free, but i dont understand why an outage at one datacentre woulld stop the service completely and he website unless all your servers are located t the same datacentre which really doesnt seem a very good idea. keep up the great work though!
I am a premium user and I cant connect and cant even listen to my playlists either. I´m also into Offline mode. what to do?
Another premium subscriber who has effectively been totally disconnectd - along with an email saying my sub renewal (which wasn't due) has been unsuccessful (despite the account being stuffed with more than enough pounds). Can't connect at all now.
Still doesn't work, how long does it take to fix??
Mine is still not working... :(
used off-line mode and love it
You kept us well informed, and though you were missed - it's the first problem I have had in the last year. Keep up the good work.
