News Sites & Blogs
- The Pansentient League - Afront’s site mixes news, reviews, and hints & tips with editorials and commentary on all things Spotify.
- Spotify Twitter List - Real-time list of Spotify news and views as tweeted by the most influential Spotify users on Twitter.
- Spotmylist - Norwegian blog (English translation here) that posts Spotify-related news, reviews, and opinion.
- SpotiNotes - Great blog about Spotify, with a selection of news and spotlights on new Spotify content.
- Spotifylistor - Swedish blog that posts playlists, Spotify news and features.
- fredrikkjell.se - Fredrik Kjell’s blog, including some occasional Spotify news and views (in English).
- The Spotify Blog - An independant Spotify news blog (unfortunately seems to have gone quiet for now).
Music Finder Sites & Blogs
These sites and blogs recommend music on Spotify and help you find what’s new.
- Spotinews - Music-finder site. Updated frequently, joebuck’s site is the best blog out there to keep track of new releases on Spotify.
- Are You Spotified? - Music finder site specializing in club and house music.
- Indiefy - Site dedicated to locating indie pop, shoegaze, dreampop etc. Recommended if this genre’s your preference.
- On The Spot - This blog from the Eardrums Music team is a well-written and useful site that spotlights new releases and other Spotify tidbits.
- The Best of the Worst of Spotify - Funny posts about “some of the most horrendous albums ever produced.”
- Dagens Spotifylista - Daily lists of recommended music, often based on a theme (in Swedish. English translation here).
- spotifyplaylists - A blog of personal playlists “collected from friends and strange corners“
- Northern Exposure - Blog about Norwegian indie music on Spotify.
- Jockes Spotifyblogg - Per Johansson’s blog where he posts about albums and artists available on Spotify, as well as the occasional news story (in Swedish).
Spotify + Last.fm
These sites mash with Last.fm to provide recommendation and other useful services.
- Freshspotify - Emails you when fresh music from your favourite bands are available on spotify. Add your favourites on the site and they’ll do the checking.
- Spotify.fm - Webtool to list the latest Spotify releases of all your favourite artists on Last.fm. Also has an RSS feed, search based on both username or tag, and now also provides a similar artist search
- Last.fm + Spotify + Find New Albums - Uses your last.fm loved tracks and top lists to recommend new releases. Also matches against recommendations, lets you view only singles or albums, and has an RSS feed
- Spotify updates from Last.fm - List the latest Spotify releases of all your favourite artists on Last.fm. Uniquely lets you specify the playcount range to consider
- Last.fm Spotify Search - Greasemonkey script that adds a green note icon next to tracks, albums and artists on Last.fmís website. Click the note to search in Spotify
- Lastify - Plug-in that bolts onto the regular Spotify client and lets you Love, Ban, and Tag tracks back to Last.fm
- Spotifyrelease.com - Similar to freshspotify, this release notification service lets you subscribe to artists then be notified by email whenever they have new releases on Spotify.
Apps and Tools: Search & Browser Tools
Here are some tools to help with searching Spotify and to plug-in to your web browser.
- Spotify Super Search - The only advanced search tool for Spotify, and the only site to let you search by any genre, not just a small set as used by most playlist sites.
- Spotify Search for Firefox - Search plug-in for Firefox. Adds search-selected options to right-click menu.
- Fire Spot - Experimental Firefox add-on that that analyzes webpages for tracklists. Anything flagged as a track receives a green small spotify-like logo. Clicking the logo performs a search in Spotify.
- Spotify Accelerator - IE8 and Firefox tool to search Spotify for selected text. See the blog post here for more info.
- FoxyTunes - FireFox browser plugin music player that can now control Spotify
- Clickable links in Spotify’s release spreadsheet - Greasemonkey script for Firefox that adds clickable links to Spotify’s release spreadsheets
Apps and Tools: Spotify URL Tools
- Cleanify - Generates clean, readable links from Spotify URLs. The cleaned links include human-readable details in the URL (artist, album, track etc.) Thereís also a Clipboard Filter (backgraound app that translates copied Spotify URLs into Cleanify links) and a Cleanify API.
- LNKby - URL shortening service that recognizes Spotify URLs and shortens them to http://SPOTIFY.ly links.
- Spotibot Better Links - Spotibot’s ‘better link’ service provides Facebook integration and album art on Spotify link pages.
- Social Spotify - A novel way to share your playlists with friends, this site lets you add album art and genre details then provides a Facebook post or widget code.
- Decode Spotify URIs - Paste a Spotify address into this app and it “decodes” the URL to return a page of detail including artist, album, tracklists, length, year, and album art.
Apps and Tools: Remotes
Remotes are tools to control the Spotify client remotely.
- Spotify Remote - a Salling Clicker app to control Spotify for Mac from your cell phone
- Spotify Mac Remote - a plugin for Spotify that allows you to use your Macís remote control to Play, Pause and change tracks. Requires SIMBL.
- SpotifyBTind - Another mobile remote, this time for Sony Ericsson phones. All you need is an SE phone with Bluetooth enabled and Bluetooth on your computer
- Spotify Web Remote - Promising-looking remote app that lets you control Spotify via a web browser.
- Music Controls - iPhone app (on Cydia) that lets you run and control the Spotify iPhone app in the background.
Apps and Tools: Others
- Spotify Collection - Very useful Spotify webapp that lets you manage all your favourite albums using a slick, album-art driven interface.
- SpotiChart - Monitors Twitter for tweets with Spotify links, then compiles global charts and statistics such as “Most tweeted albums of the week” and “most tweeted Playlists over the last month.”
- Spotibot - Send a tweet with an artist’s name to Spotibot and it replies with a recommendation.
- Spotify Collections - Web-based personal playlist manager that lets you create and share your playlists. Once registered, you cna build a list of albums: the site groups these by artist to provide a neat web-based playlist management tool.
- listdj.se- App that gives you the lyrics of the current playing track on Spotify.
- toastify - app that’ll display a toast-style pop-up whenever the track changes in Spotify.
- widgify - Startup site that promises Spotify widgets soon.
- SpotiFM - A Spanish-language site that seems to take control of what you’re listening to on Spotify via a DJ client app. The site publishes a variety of lists which you can play on Spotify. For track, you can view statistics such as which user has listened to the track the most.
- SpotifiTunes - Maps your iTunes library to Spotify to create a personal list of artists. Upload a file from iTunes then the site creates a list of all your artists, with links to Spotify.
- Songbird Addons for Spotify - Spotify-related add-ons for freeware music player Songbird
- Clipification - Integrates ClipothËque (the multimedia organizer) with Spotify
- Jolicloud app - Netbook OS Jolicloud has an app store model for adding new apps. Spotify is now supported.
Other Sites
- Soundtrack.nu - Searchable database of movie soundtracks, now with links to open the album (if available) in Spotify.
- Add2Spotify - Lets you vote for albums you want added to Spotify.
- bespotify.com - This community site (which proclaims itself the “Number One Spotify Community“) has over 1000 members and is built on the Ning social network platform.
- spotify-forum.com - An unofficial forum for Spotify discussions, this seems fairly busy now with nearly 400 registered users.
- Spotify Labels - A complete, clickable list of all the record labels on Spotify.
Playlists: Sharing Sites
Here is a complete list of all known playlist sites, listed in alphabetical order. Also see the Pansentient League’s Playlist Site Awards for recommendations.
- Listas Spotify - Spanish playlist site.
- Listiply - Similar features to Spotylist, but adds comments, album art, user login, and reports number of plays for each playlist.
- Listopify - Easy-to-use playlist site, similar to Spotylist but with a few more features.
- Myspotify.com - Familiar-looking playlist site with nearly 6,000 playlists.
- Share My Playlists - Popular playlist site with many playlists.
- Specifyspot - Playlist site with a social-networking angle. User-definable tags, text search, lots of bookmarks - this site is almost perfect: the only drawback for me is that it’s designed for Swedish users: there is an English language switcher, but unfortunately it only seems to translate the tags.
- Spotifies! - Playlist sharing site. Includes specific areas for music festivals, Billboard charts, and collaborative playlists.
- Spotify Playlists - Playlist site based in France. Very basic site, but lots of playlists.
- Spotify*playlists - Playlist site with search, RSS feed and quick ‘n easy add
- Spotifyfriends - Claims to be “the largest community for sharing Spotify playlists.“. Has links to share playlists on Facebook, Delicious etc.
- Spotifylinks - Nice looking playlist site, looks like they’re just starting up though as many of the playlists are just full albums. Excellent translator widget: the entire site seems to be available in any of 12 languages. There’s also a dashboard widget for Mac users.
- Spotifylist - RSS feeds, playlists by genre and tag, add comments to existing playlists, upload album art.
- spotifylistan - Swedish playlist sharing site (in Swedish)
- Spotifylistat - Finnish playlist sharing site.
- Spotifynd - Tag-based playlists with search.
- Spotifyparty - Playlist site and blog.
- SpotifyPlaylists - playlists by genre (select from a limited set), add comments to existing playlists, upload album art. Playlists are searchable (although this depends on the playlist mixers entering track-by-track details first)
- Spotifyworld - Basic playlist site, possibly the easiest to use yet.
- Spotilinks - This site takes a fresh and unique approach to playlists, calling itself “the first musical social network for UK Spotify users.” The original french version (qui est devenu trËs populaire en France) includes a demo video.
- Spotylist - Bill Spoty’s clean and simple playlist site - easy upload, simple click-to-vote thumbs up, bookmark your own set of playlists.
- spotyshare - Feature-rich site (provided you register and log in)
- Totalspotify - Spotify playlist community, this site is still in beta but already has a fair amount of playlists and subscribers. Totalspotify has some extra features such as groups, tag clouds, enhanced sorting options, user stats and album reviews.
- xpandify - Playlist site with an emphasis on playlist tags and filtering. RSS feed of recent playlists.
- YourSpotify - Good eye-candy, all features you’d expect although not sure whether you can bookmark your own playlist page
Playlists: Personal Playlist Sites
Personal playlist sites spotlight a particular music style or one Spotify user’s favourites.
- Hot Spot Music - Personal playlist site (via Twitter) featuring a variety of musical styles.
- Spotlists - Posts chart-based playlists such as the current Billboard Rock Top 20 or the Swedish Dance Charts Top 20.
- Dagens Jazz - Daily jazz tracks - nice!
- Electroplastas - Spanish blog with some great looking movie, TV, and videogame-based playlists.
- Canciones Y Musica - Spanish blog with a personal selection of favourites on Spotify.
- Spotify Me - Personal blog with themed playlists such as 20 Must-Have Albums of 2009.
- Scotify - A selection of Scottish playlists (via Scotch Music).
- Megamind Spotify Playlists - The Nordic clubbing and DJ culture site’s selection of Spotify playlists.
- The Spotify Crates - Personal playlist site with areas that highlight new releases, old favourites and playlists. Check out the samples section for a fun who-samples-who list.
Playlists: Automated Playlist Sites
Automated playlist sites generate links of Spotify playlists automatically.
- Spotibot Playlist Generator - From the makers of Spotibot, the Playlist Generator lets you enter any artist or band then generates a playlist of tracks from similar artists.
- frisim.com/spotify -Shows playlists posted on a large number of Swedish blogs (in Swedish).
- Spotwitfy - Lists playlists posted on Twitter.
- Spotify Hunted - A Spotify-powered version of We Are Hunted, a site that lists the latest top 100 most popular songs in the world (based on “what people are saying about artists“).
- Topsify - Weekly updates with links to playlists of the UK Top 40 Charts, Swedish dance charts etc. Add the playlist once, then Topsify will update it every week.
Developer Resources
Resources for programmers and developers.
- meta-spotify - Phil Nashís ruby wrapper for the Spotify Metadata API.
- Spotimeta - Python library for querying the Spotify metadata service. Data is returned as simple Python dictionaries.
- NRK P3 Spotify Playlists - Developer resource that uses the Spotify metadata API to hook into the popular Norwegian radio stationís playlists.
- GreenStripes - GreenStripes provides Ruby bindings for libspotify
- C#/.NET wrapper - Jonas Larsson’s libspotify wrapper (see announcement)
- A Glance at Spotify’s Peer-to-Peer Streaming, Gunnar Kreitz, IETF 75 - Fascinating technical presentation on how Spotify works. These are the slides presented by Spotify developer Gunnar Kreitz at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IEFT) event held at the end of July 2009. PDF format.
