Spotify scrobbles

Almost immediately after launch we started getting heaps of requests from people who wanted to be able to scrobble the music they were playing on Spotify to Last.fm (Last.fm is a cool music recommendation site for those of you who don’t know). The demand was so high that people started creating their own solutions to scrobble, which were cool but a little hard to install and run for the average user.

So today we are really excited to announce that we’ve added scobbling support directly into Spotify, no more need to install any other software. To setup scrobbling just open the user preferences in Spotify and enter your Last.fm username and password and you’re ready to scrobble.

And there’s more! One of our developers also came up with a neat Greasemonkey script for Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari that works with Last.fm. What is does is it adds a little green music icon next to all the tracks, albums and artists on Last.fm’s website. When you click the icon it will search through Spotify for that artist or track and you can start listening to it right away. To get the add-on you need to download Greasemonkey for your browser (or Greasekit if you use Safari) and then the script.

So for everyone who was waiting for this feature, enjoy!

Great news folks, the scrobbling works flawlessly for me!

Whoho, this is perfect! Thanks a lot :-)

Comment by mellowyellow

Great! Again another proof that Spotify listens carefully to what the user have to say and comes up with a rock solid solution! Thanks again for making this came true, folks.

SUPER, thanks for this great feature!

This was the only thing missing from Spotify for me and my friends, but now it is complete! (except all the music in the world ;)
The scrobbling works great. Thanks for a great application and service!

A really strange coincidence. This morning I’d installed <a href=”http://code.google.com/p/scrobblify/”>Scrobblify</a> and I was just guessing why you were not doing it yourself.

Now everything works perfectly for me! Anyway, there’s one more feature that I’m missing a lot. Since the Lastfm software cannot recognize the tracks that I’m playing with Spotify, I’m no longer able to easly add them to my Lastfm’s favorites. To do that I have to visit my Lastfm’s profile every time I love a song… Is there something you can do about that? Is it only me?

Comment by coxy

YES! I just did a little sex wee in my pants. This is exciting news; I’m going to blog about it.

For anybody using Google Chrome as their browser, with the latest version you can use Greasemonkey scripts by adding the option --enable-greasemonkey to the Chrome shortcut and putting the scripts in the directory C:\Scripts (you need to restart Chrome after putting a new script in there). I’ve tried it with the Spotify script above, and it works fine.

At last! It works like a charm! Thank you, guys. Now all I need is to wait you expand the music library for Argentina, it sucks and BIG time :D

Comment by malesca

Nice!

This is probably way too edge-case to add, but: me and my girlfriend listen to music through a single HTPC, so it’d be really useful to be able to add multiple Last.fm accounts and switch between them. Bonus points if it’s really easy to see who is currently selected and few clicks (ideally one) to change.

On a completely different note, I had a quick look at the code for the Greasemonkey script, and it looks like someone reinvented the wheel with Url.encode. Just use encodeURIComponent :) There is also document.body.

Comment by flosoft

Congratulations! It’s amazing! Only thing missing now is to be able to play a Last.fm Recommendation / Library Radio Station in Spotify.

Excellent news, spotify just went from awesome to frickin awesome!

Comment by bellfalasch

Very very nice! Been longing for this =)

But I’ll keep on using Scrobblify instead because I want to switch to the Last.fm client and read info about artists, tag them, see recommendations, love a song, add to favourites, etc.

When Spotify reports the data to the Last.fm client, then I’ll quit using Scrobblify.

But, a step in the right direction!

Scrobbling is probably be the feature that will make me use spotify my first when just wanting to listen to a little music.

Now, how about airtunes? Take a look at this implementation: http://nanocr.eu/software/justeport/

Comment by cure33

Wonderful. I’ve been using the Scrobblify plugin until now and it has been working fine since I use Miranda IM instead of MSN Live Messenger.

Comment by sumolounge

Excellent! Thank you very much for adding a superb feature to an already superb piece of software!

Comment by sandos

Awesome, no more scrobblify (which is a pain in the behind to have to start all the time, in addition to the last.fm client!)

Comment by cocoshusse

Thanks for last.fm-scrobbling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love y’all!!!

Comment by constantine

this option doesn’t exist in my preferences page, should i reinstall spotify? not really sure i want to do that.

Comment by andres

constantine - If you log out and log back in Spotify will update with the latest version that has scrobbling.

Comment by danielswedin

Well, I can’t get it to work.

I type in my username and my password and then I click the “apply” button. Nothing happens and my Last.FM client doesn’t get that I’m playing tracks in Spotify.

When restart the program and look at the Last.FM option in Preferences something seems wrong. In the password field, there’s plenty of digits typed (and my last.fm password is kinda short).

No error messages, no nothing. What’s wrong?

Comment by andres

danielswedin - It’s normal for the password to appear longer in Spotify, it’s done to mask the actual size.

If you run Spotify and go to Last.fm’s webpage does it show what you’ve been playing? Spotify doesn’t use the last.fm client, we send the info directly to them without it.

Comment by danielswedin

Ah, I just noticed that songs I’ve listened to with Spotify was logged to my Last.FM profile. Problemed solved, it seems.

Cheers Andres!

Comment by troublesome

Spotify + Last.fm, I love it! Thanks for listening to us.

Comment by bamsegrill

Göttans! Spotify + Last.fm = <3

Comment by lenaf

At first I got the error message “Status: Unable to contact server (Error 309)”. And then I tried my old solution, i.e. Scrobblifier, but than THAT didn’t work either. My heart sank, but for some reason I tried again to set my preferences in Spotify and suddenly it worked! Thanks! I hope it will work flawlessly from now on. :o)

Comment by blueviper

This is amazing and my friends wet dream! The only downside is that lastfm records all the “bad” music you listen to too:P

That other thing need to be fixed for Opera too!

Comment by spinsis

Comment by mono*

i want that love-button too!

that would make the last.fm integration perfect…

but anyway, scrobbling is great news! thank you!

Comment by cyberneticangel

Agree on above noted - i’d like a “i love” or “block” buttons tough. Still, thumbs up!

Comment by lukedoof

Cheers for that. Now my life is complete. :D

Comment by mollwe

It is nice indeed! However, how about using a plugin that uses the Last.FM client as Windows media player or Itunes does?

Comment by mabel

i can’t seem to get the gm script to work in opera for mac..works great in windows though.

Comment by zanshi

This is just great! Kepp up the good work : )

Comment by henrikmattsson

Scrobbling ads is not cool in my opinion.

Comment by majken

I just peed my pants :( thank you Spotify! Only thing I wait for now is the albums of Electric President, Band of Horses and The Shins. When that’s done you will own my heart.

Comment by kgeiger

And it’s not even Christmas Eve yet! :)

Comment by cocoshusse

I can’t get the Greasemonkey-script to work. I installed greasemonkey but where do i put the .js-file? I can’t add it in Greasemonkey for IE since it not .gm4ie-fil (i’ve tried to rename it). I’ve also put the .js-file in GM4ie/scripts/-folder but no Spotify-icon when I visit last.fm. Any scroblifiers outthere who can help me? :-)

Comment by syff

I, too, have the same problem as mabel above: the Greasemonkey script doesn’t seem to work on Opera on mac.

Nevertheless, thanks for adding scrobbling to Spotify!

Comment by cocoshusse

I still can’t get the IE-script to work but now i’ve read the GM-help and added the .js manually in extensions.list but still no spotify-icon. When i open the .js in notepade all linebreaks are like a square or something. I opened the file in Dreamweaver CS and just saved it and at least it looks ok when i open it in notepad. But instead i get som jscript-err when visiting last.fm. This is what i added to extension.list:

[Inserts Spotify links on Last.fm]
Name=Spotify + Last.fm
Domains=lastfm.se
ScriptFileName=spotify__lastfm.user.js
version=1

Comment by d-m_r

mollwe: Why would you want that? Thats the easy way to do it. But this is more excellence cause you can scrobble using only the stand alone spotify exe on friends computers without having to install the Last.fm application to. I love the last.fm application but its greatness to only have to keep it online when I listen to music with it. It adds no extra to the scrobble.

Comment by miek

Great update, thanks guys!

However, I second affisch (#comment-610) in that “Since the Lastfm software cannot recognize the tracks that I’m playing with Spotify, I’m no longer able to easly add them to my Lastfm’s favorites.”

The reason why the hacks still worked better than the native support was that they worked through the last.fm client. This allowed for seeing artist information as well as directly loving and sharing certain tracks.

Dear Spotify, now that you almost went all the way, why not give it the finishing touch it deserves and calls for :)

Comment by mpv

I was just about to find a half-relevant blog-post here on your blog to make a wish for this feature when I discovered that you had this blog post about already having this implemented four days ago!

Spotify-crew, you rock!

Another feature that would be nice (I’m using the OS X version) is to have keyboard shortcuts that work even though Spotify isn’t currently the active window. Growl support would also be awesome!

Comment by cale

mpv, is this what you are referring to as growl support:
http://www.spotify.com/blog/archives/2008/06/10/spotify-0214/

Comment by gadgetchannel

I have created an application called “Spotify Last.fm Buttons” which adds buttons to Spotify allowing you to love and tag the currently playing track (providing you have scrobbling enabled). You can get it from:
http://lastfm.gadget-channel.co.uk/SpotifyLastFMButtons

Note: It relies on the “now playing” submission to Last.fm being successful as, despite appearances, it is not actually integrated into Spotify. It merely uses a Windows API to set the main Spotify window as its parent.

Comment by akrde

For me the Last.fm scrobbling option is very good implemented by the Spotify dev team: just turn on the scrobbling option in the Spotify client now and you don’t need the Last.fm client and/or thirdparty applications anymore on the computer for scrobbling. Nice done! Loving a track can be done on the Last.fm profile page in the “Recently Listened Track” section.

Comment by hano

I would LOVE a toolbar for firefox!

Comment by pone

great. i would like a plugin that will show what you’re listening to in msn messenger, like it can do when you’re playing something in wmp or winamp.

Comment by gabma

Awesome… great tool . I love it
We just need a little bit of social on top of the app, see what your spotify friends are listening to and some kind of “Library” to avoid searching for the artists all the time

Comment by djaiss

This is THE feature I’ve been waiting for since the release of the first version… Thanks for your reactivity guys, this is awesome.

Comment by clixxord

brilliant…… but it does mean i can no longer listen to jive bunny

Comment by tforssand

Like someone mentioned in the comments. A scrobble for msn would be cool too.

Comment by entrimo

Awesome, really didn’t see this coming. Shows that you really listen to what the users want, great job!

Comment by tomb

There already are a scrobble for msn.. Built into Spotify. Just start listening.

Comment by azp

Fantastic!

Comment by pone

yeah! didn’t know msn-support was already built in. had unticked the option in msn. fantastic!

Comment by acey

many many thanks for this awesome feature. :)

Comment by airraven

Fantastic. =)

The single feature missing now’s support for “Now Playing” messages in Instant Messenger clients.
Throw that in, and you’ve got the god of music players. =\

Comment by tomb

Well.. Messenger already has it.

Hey andres. People seamed to have missed this. Maybe write a post about it?

Comment by airraven

…So it does. =\
That’s bizzare. Looks like I turned off the feature.
Can’t honestly remember doing that.

Criticism nullified!
‘Tis awesome. =)

Best of luck keeping this afloat. God knows it’s a fine enough piece of software to deserve to stay around.

Comment by ehelin

Great work! But please, could you stop the commercials from destroying my last.fm statistics? I’m fine with the commercials, but do you really have to scrobble them?

Comment by t1mmyb

I trust Spotify slightly more than I would any random company, but I’m still uncomfortable entering my last.fm username and password into the Spotify client app.

Last.fm has token-based authentication. Why could this not have been used?

Comment by nimapirzadeh

It would be nice with the LOVE THE TRACK function from Last.fm.

btw - keep up the great work!!

Comment by bodster

Great, thank you!

And now a suggestion, an option to NOT scrobble the radio? Random picked songs (and often not in any way to my liking as the meta tags from the record companies obviously is terrible) is not something I want added to me last.fm library.

Comment by soopasoundz

Hi everybody !
Just discovered the spotify app today : great work ! But i did not manage to make the lastFM scrobbling work, though i enter my lastFM passwd in the correct section. Maybe it is due to the fact that my machine is behind a proxy ? But i can listen to music though, with the proxy settings in HTTPS (the same than for my browser).

Any idea ?

Otherwise, this is really great ! Is a linux release planned ?

Comment by soopasoundz

Error Message : Unable do contact server (Error 301), 7 tracks queued.

My internet is behind a proxy because I live at a college campus. Spotify is working with proxy settings but I get that Error 301 for last.fm option.

Keep up the great work!!

Comment by humbert15

fantastic! dream come true stuff. thanks!

Comment by martin.sveg

Great! I’m just missing the use of the Last.fm client, the information about the artist and track from the last.fm library. I also miss the “love”-button. I will test “Spotify Last.fm Buttons” which adds buttons to Spotify allowing you to love and tag the currently playing track.

http://lastfm.gadget-channel.co.uk/SpotifyLastFMButtons

A step closer to completion for Spotify!

Comment by dalai

Hello,

Can you somehow fix the Last.fm support? Last.fm native software, iTunes etc. are scrobbling well, but Spotify is unable to connect server with HTTP Error code 301 (301 Moved Permanently).

I’m listening behind the proxy.

Comment by lukeorafferty

Yeah this works ok. however not everything I listen to is scrobbled. If I listen to an album on Spotify I want the entire thing to scrobble not just the odd track. Irritating:S

Comment by msmillencolin

the scrobbling doesn’t work for me! =/ what should i do?

Comment by jams

This is the reason I started using Spotify finally, but where can we report artist names that aren’t correct and mess Last.fm stats? Like this: http://www.last.fm/music/S%C3%A4kert

Comment by holley

HTTP Reply 409 : 5 tracks queued

I’m behind a proxy at a University Campus. I would LOVE to scrobble, but I can still listen to music?

Comment by nymphaea

It doesn’t work for me.
Is it my computer, the program or am I just stupid?

I’ve done exactly as I am supposed to.. why doesn’t it work?

Comment by vongrepa

Scrobble from behind proxy support would be greatly appreciated.
When first hooked on scrobbeling its actually kind of hard to listen to music without beeing able to do it :-)

Comment by olaisalmi

Status: Unable to contact server (error 301), 49 tracks queued

Also behind a proxy. I need to define the proxy settings for Spotify - how come these are not used for scrobbling?

Comment by jaffathecake

I also have the 301 proxy issue.

Comment by sensei321

Is it really THAT difficult to fix that proxy-thingie? This problem has been pointed at sice day one, and still nothing is done. A lot of users are behind a proxy. I’ve been using scrobblify to go around the issue, but it’s not really a good workaround since I must run Spotify, Scrobblify and the last.fm-client. And Scrobblify doesn’t work when Microsoft Messenger is running… Oh well.. Can’t you do something about it soon? Spotify is an amazing application and service, and it’s really sad that a little thing like this is ruining a lot of it. (YES, I like stats! :O)

Comment by georbe

Amazing…
Thanks…

Comment by nilujeperchut

Actually I’m using spotify at work with last.fm. But I’m behind a proxy. But with this configuration last.fm scrobbling is not working (Error 304) even if I fill the proxy settings. Aren’t there a patch or new version to fix this problem ?

Comment by errek

Why doesn’t Spotify, scrobble, thats what you call it?, without you being online on Last.fm. Sounds kinda retarded that you have to be logged in for it to record what you listen to. No, I’m not behind proxies or anything.

Comment by petezafase

Hi, I got a problem.
Whenever I am going on my pc I have to rewrite my password to the Last.Fm in Spotify to be able to scroble.
It is very anoing, and I do not know why it is doing it.
It seems that my password gets messed up everytime I turn on my computer.

Comment by skistar123

mine won’t work, i typed in my last.fm username and password and clicked on ‘apply’ then I clicked away, and then on my last.fm and it wasn’t doing anything, so then I went back on preferences and it’s messed up my password, it’s many characters too long. Every time I go away from the preferences page, my password becomes too long!

Comment by petezafase

I’ve got the same problem Skistar123!
Can someone help us with this?

Comment by petezafase

Though I only gets that problem whenever I exit Spotify completly.

Comment by andres

The password always shows as a long set of characters, this is done to mask what the real password is and does not affect scrobbling at all.

Comment by hyoscine

I can’t believe you were so thoughtful as to implement this. Thanks!

Comment by colintaylor

I thought I’d add my 301 error comment. I’m behind a proxy as well.

Comment by kameleontti

Thought I’d report my problem as well: I keep getting Error 309 (Unable to contact server). If I switch to ITunes, the scrobbling works fine, so it’s not the last.fm that is down. There’s no proxy.

I get the “Status: Unable to contact server (Error 309), 124 tracks queued” as well. I’ve gotten this error message for at least 3 weeks now.

Comment by schnarty

I still always get “Error 309″. Is there any solution to this problem? It has been going on for weeks. If anybody knows what I have to do please let me know thx.

Comment by schnarty

Oh, I see everyone else here has the same problem going on. So, I am also Mac OS X and NO Proxy.

Comment by fluffyb

I don’t get any status message and it’s stopped scrobbling to last.fm from both windows and mac client!

Comment by jamiecharlton

I got an error too.

There must be some serious problems with the in-built scrobbler. Has anyone else had the same listen scrobbled up to 5 times? What’s happened with me (I run on OSX by the way) is that occasionally, Spotify will rescrobble everything i’ve ever listened to in the program, meaning that I have 5 duplications of everything I’ve listened to.

Has anyone else had the same problems??

Comment by chrishowell

same problem here too, error 309, Mac OSX…….are they going to do something about this? Or tell us they know about it and are in the process of doing something?

Comment by andres

chrishowell - If you download the latest version from our site or log out and back in and let the update occur it should solve the Error 309 error.

you rocks !!! but we absolutely need the “love” feature from lastfm,

thx

Comment by dieu7

The 301 error, which occurs when you try to scrobble via a https proxy is still not fixed in 0.3.12 :(

This error is the main reason I haven’t upgraded to premium account yet, because it makes me not want to use Spotify at work.

Comment by rougetortoise

Thanks guys,
is there some way to ‘love’ tracks from spotify?

Comment by neilrickards

I also have an 304 error. Possibly due to HTTPS proxy
Great product / service though!

Comment by mrristo

First of all I got the message in preferences something as “unknown connection” or something. I closed Itunes and last.fm scrobbler and reopened Spotify. Now the message is gone but Spotify doesn’t scrobble. Last.fm library only show the playing track from Spotify but it doesn’t stay in the library when it’s ended.

Comment by mrristo

it stated ‘unknown reply from server’ under Spotify preferences instead of ‘unknown connection’ s stated in my previous comment

Comment by mrristo

sorry for third comment but I noticed that my password is way longer than it should be in the password box for scrobbling. I change it but it always changed back for a some long text. Last.fm library doesn’t understand whether I listen to Itunes+Last.fm Scrobbler or Spotify. It shows sometimes this or the other. And no tracks stay in the library after they end. They just show up when they are actually playing.

Comment by mrristo

oh god. sorry for the fourth post. forgot to add that Im behind a Mac and there’s no Proxy

Comment by dikjones

Same error
“Status: Unable to contact server (Error 301)”

Mac 10.5.6
Spotify 0.3.13 (rev 45214)
Behind Proxy (Spotify correctly using HTTPS proxy)

Comment by puusippi

I have been thinking of subscribing for spotify for awhile now… This made up my mind. Thanks :)

Comment by eelientje

Comment by xistera

yeah, the same for me

Comment by tangobcn

Hay un error en la lista de reproduccion de “Nena”, del album “Cover me”, el tema ” Starman no es el correcto, podríais corregirlo por favor?
Gracias!

Comment by qrobur

Still no scrobbling to the Last.fm client? Pity.

Comment by qrobur

Also, it doesn’t help that every 10 tracks or so there’s an ‘unknown response’ logged that kills the scrobbling until you restart the application. This may have something to do with the advertisements (another reason to hate them).

Kudos for starting development of this interface, but you have a lot to do to make it fully featured.

Comment by pingubenji

Its nice that the current song shows up in msn…
But is it possible to make the link into a spotify-song-link so that friends only have to click it to play the same song?

Comment by deaquipalla

Could you explain how to fix the “error 308″ in scrobbling on lastfm?
Thx

Comment by ichmbch

Hello,

Spotify Last.fm scrobbler works good, but it would be much better if Spotify could scrobble songs unsing Last.fm client. I want to tag and love my songs and I want to add them to my Last.fm playlist. It is much handy to do that using Last.fm client than Last.fm website.

Do you have any future plans to create scrobbler working throw Last.fm client?

It would be really great!

Thank you!

Comment by vaneenc

what is the process to add a new artistto spotify?
Can i do it myself?
Or what should i do…

Comment by merikari

Please fix Spotify to scrobble using the proxy settings. You have an amazing service, but this has been bugged for weeks and doesn’t (at least to a layman) seem like a problem that would take a lot of effort to fix.

Comment by milzer

Same problem as tons of previous posters :(

Comment by ianhennessy

Same problem as most when scrobbling behind a proxy. I get error 302. Would be sweet if you guys could sort this out.

Comment by jihan_nyhn

WOW! It is very very rare for a company to actually do things right first time, just cos people asked for it and without shameless over advertising and a poor quality product. When you expand the music on spotify to cover more underground and old stuff so you can find pretty much everything you search for THEN this will be the BEST online thingy I’ve EVER used!

thanks!

Det vore grymt om man kunde ställa in ett standard last.fm konto här på hemsidan.
Och sedan när du loggar in någon annanstans med ditt konto så är det automatiskt inställt för din användare och sedan tas det bort när någon annan loggar in.

Comment by headkhandi

I only have one problem with this. Some music tracks are tagged incorrectly and cannot be corrected. For instance P!nk is tagged as Pink on my playlist:( therefore shows as some obscure, unknown 80’s band on my last.fm chart.

Comment by aylacatpaw

Mine won’t work… :(

Comment by thetgn

Error 302, behind a proxy.

Be good if the Last.fm network settings could be taken from main Spotify setttings or even a tick box to setup proxy settings on the Last.fm settings section.

Comment by pessi8

Getting: “Status: Unable to contact server (Error 301)
I’m also behind a proxy. When there is no proxy, it’s working just fine.

Please add the proxy support for the Last.fm plugin.

Comment by ninnuuuh

thank you so very much :) i’m so happy about this scrobbling thing :D

Comment by dieu7

I’m not sure whether someone from Spotify is still reading this old blog entry. Apparently this is the place where bug reports are actively handled: http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/inconsistant_use_of_proxy_settings

I suggest all who have the proxy error, go and report your issue to the support community. For me, this bug is very annoying especially since it should not be that hard to fix.
