Collaborative playlists

Jelly BeansA couple of weeks ago we talked about the excitement of getting music recommendations and inspiration from our friends and our ongoing search for delicious things.

I found myself making a kick-ass playlist with house music and sent it to my friend Eric, since he’s my great source of inspiration when it comes to music. I believed the playlist would haven been even better if he could have helped me by adding a few favorites and edit the playlist. The more the merrier, right?

Creating a collaborative playlist in SpotifyAnyway, here at Spotify we believe that sharing is the golden path. Therefore we released collaborative playlists today. That means that not only are you able to share playlists with others, you can let them edit the shared playlists as well. We would love your input on it so try it out and let us know what you think!

In order to turn on collaboration for a playlist, right-click (or Ctrl-click on the Mac) the list and select Collaborative Playlist. Then copy the link to the playlist and send it to a friend.

When your friend clicks on the link, it opens in Spotify and your collaborative playlist is added. Now you can both make changes, which will appear on both of your screens instantly. You can identify a collaborative playlist by the unlocked padlock icon next to it.

Using a collaborative playlist in SpotifyYou can share the playlist with any number of people, but remember that anyone who gets the link will be able to alter your playlist, as well as pass the link on to others. There is currently no way to give only specific users the right to alter a collaborative playlist, other than by controlling the access to the link. The link is the key to the playlist.

You can, however, turn off the collaborativity of the playlist the same way you turned it on. Then only you will be able to alter the playlist, but everyone who has got the link will still be able to view and play the list.

It’s not very clear weather it’s the URL or the http-link you are supposed to copy. Nevertheless, I can’t get none of them working. We both have Spotify but I get the error message: Invalid option: spotify:user and so on. I have chosen spotify.exe as program to open with. Can someone please make a step by step instruction?

doesent seem to work instantly, the times i have tried it, it takes 5-15 minutes before alterations show on the list.

Comment by jowie

I don’t seem to be able to get this to work with my friend. I’ve set it as collaborative, sent him the link but he can’t get the link to work… :( any ideas?

Ni i Spotify-gänget är så häftiga det är fanimej inte riktigt klokt. Kan bara önska lycka till i fortsättningen. Världens drömjobb är inte på Hamilton Island - det är på HGG20.

Comment by weesimon

This doesn’t seem to be working very well at all. So far I’ve managed to get in to one collaborative playlist, about 20 minutes ago … now, if I try again, it tells me “playlist not found”. And that’s exactly the message I’m getting when I try pretty much every other shared-playlist link — ones other people are obviously having no problems with. Hey ho.

Comment by nebo

Superb feature! Would be even better if one could see who added a certain track to the playlist…

Great job!

Comment by jenrique

This is amazing. Just what I’ve been looking for for years!

Comment by grandgroove

I am also having problems using the collaborative playlist, i’ve tried a dozen times, with various links that people have pasted on this blog, but I have the same problem as a few people above, the playlist starts to load then a message appears “playlist not found”? Can anyone shed some light? does it work with the free version?

Thanks

Comment by yond

yeah it would be great to know who added tracks to the playlist :p

Comment by esox

Neat function!
A feature for the collaborative playlists would be to have a function automaticly matching up users with quite alike playlists but then adding or suggesting tracks from the two lists the users might like.

Comment by elliejay

Response to Grandgroove:

Yes, it does work with the free version… Me and my dad worked it out perfectly well!

Comment by jontesjoberg

Super awesome feature i love it.

Just logg in and there are a few new songs everytime ^^

Comment by kretzen

Very nice feature. What would be even nicer though is oif it would be marked what user added what song. :)

Is this feature available to those of us using the free version of Spotify or just subscribers? Collabarative Palylist isn’t highlighted when I right click

Comment by getexsm

it would be nice if there was a colume in wich the Nickname of who have added the specifik song, so i know who have added so i can talk to that person and comment the song chosen..

Comment by alexsaiz

Collaborative playlists are great!!! This is a nice feature. It would be good if permissions can be assigned (read for everybody / write for selected users). Also a column with the nickname who added the song would be excellet.

Thanks for listening our suggestions Spotify team!!

Same here, incredibly frustrating.

Wow, superb, we’ve just told everyone at our dance class about Spotify so they can listen to all the awesome swing tunes our teacher plays, and now I can make a collaborative playlist for us all to listen to & add to.

Thanks Spotify

For those using wine and have trouble adding playlists, just copy the spotify:user resource and paste it into the search bar.

Comment by ww9066

A great feature - would be great to be able to leave a little note with each track on a playlist, as you might do if you were making a mix-CD for someone.

plz help me!

Comment by garethjmsaunders

I’m just getting a “Playlist not found” error message in Spotify whenever I try to access a collaborative playlist. As are my colleagues. Not working…

Comment by knutsindre

Seems there are some issues with playlists at the moment. Right now, https://www.spotify.com/en/help/service-status/ says: “We are currently experiencing some problems with playlists”. Seems it’s been going on for a looong time though ): Love the service though.

Comment by rheeshee

How do i upload music onto spotify?

Comment by j6m8

Thanks everyone, I’ve got a bunch of colabs in my window playing right now! Just make sure you back yours up with a private playlist so that if some jerk deletes all the music in it, you can still put it back up. Thanks again!

Comment by donquote

Possibility to comment added songs would be welcome as well.

Comment by acediscovery

Great feature, we’re using it to soundtrack a party. What would be ace is if there was a de-duplication button so any duplicates get taken out.

Otherwise, we have 20 Beyonce Single Ladies to scroll though. Ace though it is, we’d be exhausted after all that dancing.

Comment by llantonian

My playlist has stopped playing with an error message saying “My song will play after the commercial message”. It has been like this for over an hour. Is this normal or is there some problem?

Comment by ithr

How do i get to send invitations?

Comment by gd303uk

Can I share music with my friends?
Yes, you can drag and drop any track, album, artist or playlist to your email or instant messenger which creates a link to your favorites that you can send to your loved ones. They need to have Spotify to listen, though. Read more about sharing and collaborative playlists in our blog.

Comment by irinad7

Sounds brilliant! I’ve already sent mine to some friends. I’ll let you know about it.

Comment by flanaghann

Please, try to keep your shared lists not too much long, please. I can spend 30 minutes to upload on my computer some people’s lists, if they have more than 100 songs inside.
