Today we completed all the changes to our music catalogue that we announced last week.
We’ve attempted to replace the affected tracks in your playlists with versions of the same song that you can play, if no replacements could be found we have hidden the tracks from the playlist. If you’d like to view which tracks are unplayable in your playlists you can do so by going to the preferences menu and un-checking “Hide Unplayable tracks” and then press the Apply button.

We’d also like to thank all of the users who have shown us support in the past week and we will double our efforts to try and win back any users who were understandably disappointed by these changes.

Ah that explains why they disappeared for a while :)
HaHa, I didn't loose a single song :)
Thanks a lot! :) There are actual good reasons for this, besides the curiosity in more easily seeing the extent of the changes to the catalogue. In my case, I for example just re-added Vangelis' Conquest of Paradise, because it was still there in your catalogue in a good version, just that your music replacement algorithm hadn't found the very same song for some reason. Very useful feature!
Btw, I now also got back a song from Rammstein, Miserlou, and stuff from Lisa Miskovsky. :D This actually uncovers imperfections in the matching algorithm, and I suspect users out there in total had a LOT of music "removed" when it really wasn't.
When can we expect to have Birdnest Record's records up again? I strongly doubt that they belong to the the opposing labels...
Robyn - Robyn? -Come on, Is it Robyn or her record lable who doesn´t agree with Spotify?
"Robyn or her record label", kind of funny.
Awesome! there are some good artists / albums in this release. Very great. spotify is awesome (even though a lot of stuff is now missing).
If you can't find Robyn's album it's down to restrictions as it's avaliable for me in the UK
Hello, The Bombhappies' songs are gone, which is strange because we have sent you an email something like a year ago we're we give Spotify permission to offer our songs. Or is it the case that some other record label (organisation) claims that our music is theirs?
Nice work from the record companies that Robyn's latest album is available in U.K. but no longer available in her homeland of Sweden. I find it hard to believe that Robyn herself would be pleased with this situation so you have to ask yourself in whose interests the record companies are working?
Id say this is the end of spotify. I also guess that most people will go back to d/l music. I mean, its almost impossible to find the smiths in the client after the change. Lets go f'in pirateing!
@joelbergqvist: It's probably mostly an administrative issue that will be sorted out soon enough. @depe: There is still plenty of great music in Spotify. In fact, there is more than 2 million songs to enjoy. The problem is finding what's new and what's good. One solution is http://spotifynews.wordpress.com, other solutions can be found here: https://www.spotify.com/blog/archives/2009/01/16/sharing-is-good-share-your-spotify-playlists/
The Smiths are one of three bands who I really want to see on here
I'd just like to ask if there is anyone here from or connected to the record industry who can try and explain in simple terms the reasoning behind withdrawing content from a service like Spotify and imposing regional restrictions? Every time I think about it my head almost explodes because I cannot think of any benefits whatsoever for the artists, publishers or record companies. Maybe I have a simplified view but it would seem that if you allow access to your material on a service such as Spotify you have a chance of earning money that you would not otherwise have earned. If you remove it you have no chance of earning that money. Maybe as Samuel from Sony alluded to in another thread it is simply the case that contracts have not been updated for a digital world. But if this is true then firstly, why is it taking so long to update artists contracts for the 21st century? and secondly wouldn't it be in everyone's interests to allow access right now to legitimate services like Spotify and collect any due fees later retroactively when the contracts have been sorted out? After all the choice is between earning money or not earning money. Why would anyone running a small or large business not choose to earn money? I dont't understand! Please can someone explain it to me?!!
Was really scared first when I saw the music removed and when i had no clue how many songs that was taken away...but then i saw the "hide" option and that I just missed 41 songs from my main play list...hope you can put up Blink 182 newest cd again, it cant be region locked...its on mayor label + old + big cd...anyway...are praying for NOFX / Bad religion updates in the future :)
Where's the rest of Volbeat and all of the albums of Looptroop?
I lost about 25 of 65 songs on my playlist this is not acceptable for me since im paying 99sek for this service, i don't think ill be paying 99sek next month. In other words: I'M OUT!
Well this was more painful then I expected, several of the best songs has been removed. I appreciate that I still can see which they were though, it will help me remember to search for these songs later in hope that they've returned. One song got removed that's free to download from another site on the net, what's with that!?
Most of us have lost songs in our playlists by now and many of us are very dissapointed. But still You've gotta remember that it's the artists and/or labels that have chosen not to be on Spotify. It's not Spotify's fault. They are doing their best. Still, i would like Spotify to at least show us a complete list of labels and artists that have opted not to be, or be removed, from Spotify. (As far as I know Spotify has avoided to answer this question wherever it has been asked. Why?)
@depe: There is still plenty of music to find and enjoy in Spotify. You could always use http://spotifynews.wordpress.com as a way to find good new releases. @lunatico: Well, I lost much more but then I have thousands of songs in 50-50 playlists... and guess what: I'm still happy! And I'm also a paying customer. Also, remember that most of the artists removed really want to be featured in Spotify and therefore will be back sooner or later.
to: fewmanchu The thing is you lose old songs that can't be replaced in any way, full albums and such and some artists you don't even find when you search anymore. So im NOT happy!
I was billed my monthly fee yesterday, and today I lost access to more than 90% of the music I listen to over Spotify. Could be my... less than mainstream music taste, but this is a vast enough change to the product that looking to see if refund is in order.
fewmanchu: You said..."Also, remember that most of the artists removed really want to be featured in Spotify and therefore will be back sooner or later." If the artists really want to be featured on Spotify then why are they doing this? Again and again I come back to the same question, why are they doing this? I don't understand. It makes no sense.
fewmanchu, theres really one band that i listen to on a daily basis and there is, after the new catalogue release not a single song left. The Smiths. The big labels and the music industry should really ask themselves what benefits will come out of this. No one is gaining anything and people will go back to file sharing, since the availability is there. There is something terribly wrong with the industry. Hope they all go into bankruptcy. Twats!
And here I thought the worst was over, today most of the songs I have added to my playlists just in the last few days became red overnight. A search for "year:0-9999" now yields less than 2 million hits. In the past I've ordered physical compact discs by mail from Swedish stores regardless of my local distributors, but somehow doing the same with immaterial files is illegal? The only ones who appears to understand the rationale behind these country restrictions are lawyers. Coincidentally they are the only people who also profits from this silly scheme. Sorry, another premium account cancelled.
Thanks for trying, but this is yet another account cancelled...
People usually tend to hysteria before reality suddenly appears. Its important to remember why you actually use this service, with a determined mind to check out THAT spesific artist. Spotify emulates the feeling you used to have in recordshops, standing there eagerly in line, with five different records in front of their "listen before you buy"-desk. THANK YOU SPOTIFY! NP: Bill Frisell - Tales from the other side
~60 songs in my playlist before purges ~10 songs left after purges -> huge setback and disappointment :(
@lunatico: Yes, I understand your feelings. Hopefully most of the lost songs will come back. @digithed: I think most artists aren't aware of what's going on... @depe: The Smiths surely will be back eventually. I think the key here is patience. @dstien: Yes, I too hate the geographical restrictions, but I still choose to support Spotify. Maybe this doesn't make much sense to some of you, but to me there really aren't any good alternatives to Spotify at the moment. That's why I stay and hope they can change the system. @twofisher: Understandably so. Since about 10% of the content was lost overall, one could say you were hit extremely hard...
"We’d also like to thank all of the users who have shown us support in the past week and we will double our efforts to try and win back any users who were understandably disappointed by these changes." I think the only way of winning back users is winning back the music that was removed. So double the effort and try to convince the nearly extinct labels that this is their chance to maybe some sort of comeback and settlement with the brave new youth. And meanwhile we will get the music, you removed, from the p-bay instead :)
I guess it was to good to be true. So much of the industrial, neofolk, dark ambient, aggrotech, avantgarde and experimental bands are just... gone. Well - buying lim. edition vinyl is quite sexy anyway.
My subscription is now voided. Thank me for using your service.
If not even the record industry wants me to pay to listen to music, I don't know who will. Thanks Spotify, you gave it your best shot.
God damnit! I thought the tracks listed as gone the other day would've been enough.. Autopilot Off completely gone, Beck partly gone, Nonpoint completely gone, Oleander partly gone, Paloalto completely gone, Rise Against partly gone. What am I supposed to listen to now? ;(
I lost about 95% of my playlist with trance that i listen to the most. So i will for sure stop paying now until more trance have been added again which i hope will be soon.
Aww... I lost almost all songs I listen to :( Only Ours and The Presets remaining, and not even all of their songs either. Back to MP3 for my part, but it was nice while it lasted.
thought i had lost 41 songs from my main playlist...then i cheeked it out today agian and 149 was away..-_- some mornings is it hard to wake up..
I hope for an update of the library today. To calm people down a little bit...
Why o why have all the Flower Kings tracks been removed? Well, luckily I haven't paied anything yet, and as long as the record companies continue to act like idiots I won't share a penny with them. See y'all in the bay meanwhile. Yarr!
you just lost a subscriber.. suckers. :(
I lost alot of songs. Im are going back to torrent.
I've got a good sample size as I did a rap A-Z list. The only letters left is A,D,E,F,G,K,O,Q,R,T,V,W,X,Y,Z. Well Imma keep my free account with free subscription cards but I won't buy any more cds by the ones that were deleted. Celph Titled like wtf like they lose anything by this
I wasn't hit that hard last time. This time the songs are gone. I am sory, but i reckon 20% av the songs is gone. Country restrictions, when will record people (media industri in general) understand that the real reason why people share stuff is because my friends abroad(which i talk to daily) (for free) listen to good music. As long as there isn't any legal alternative, people will copy. I know, that this will be the concensus as to why the record company did die in about 12 year from now. Why couldn't they exist. People will write about and analyze it here is the answer. People will laugh to the stupendious labels as we today laugh at the car manufactures that in surprise ask them self: Do people want fuel efficent car? Why didn't we get that? I am sorry. I am just dissapointed. And i have no right to be cause this was free for me.Mostly frustrated to the country restrictions.
Hmm, logged in today, and ive lost approx 80% of my tracks. Ive noticed that its mainly dance / trance / funky house music thats gone. Now this is what I listen to the most. After doing further searches, it seems that these genre's are the most affected. Is there any reason behind this? Most of the missing tracks are ones that wernt even released as singles, only on vinyl or complation albums!
I have made a playlist in which I put all the deleted music. That makes it easy to see when/if anything is back on Spotify. I'm pretty angry with the industry right now, not being able to believe their stupidity. Anyway I will never ever buy an other CD in my entire life. Neither will I ever download anything again (too muck work/not worth it, those artists doesn't deserve to be listened to). What is left on Spotify is everything that is, and that is what I will listen to.
Ok Most of my fav songs have disappeared , that's bad really bad , my playlist for classical music is useless now (it was my fav playlist even if a am not especially a classical lover). Whatever hope i'll get back soon.
It was fun while it lasted. I'll never renew my sub now. I thought the music industry finally got it, but I guess not. I'm so disappointed...
well, my hardcore, hardstyle, Psychadelic, Techno, Trance, House... All the eletronical music, those playlist are totaly red! and not a single song can be replaced. Red hot chili peppers gone! from rock playlist... Man nearly all my music that i usally listen to just went away... back to youtube listening again -.- Im really really really dissapointed. not on you spotify, but on the record companies, its all their fault, and there comes there failure, this will probably begin a increase in pirate copying.
Just a tips - the replacement function isn´t as good as one think. Try a common search for the same song instead and you will find replacements instead!
